Sonny was a character and from a different era. He started his education at Fork Union Military Academy in the first grade and continued at FUMA until he graduated from high school. Can you image going to a VA military school your entire secondary education in the 1950's? He started out at VNI his freshman year of college and left the Rat Line in the first semester. He hated VMI and the feeling was mutual. He transferred to The University, UVA, and had a great NFL career.

I witness a couple of his practices at Marshall, and I would have never played for him. He turned out to be a very entertaining TV broadcaster. I got to know him because of our Virginia connections. He was a very intense guy and ended up being a good person. I wish him peace.

Sonny was a guy I had the pleasure of meeting maybe 20 or so times growing up. I grew up in Staunton, where he ended up living for a good chunk of his post-football life. Wonderful man, who affected a lot of us in that are positively.

I remember him doing the sports roundup with Kris Neal on WKDW, and his signature sendoff, which I think fits well here.

"This is Sonny Raaaaaaaandle sayin... So long, everybody!"

Went a little too far west, let's go SJ Earthquakes!
