Monroe asked for a poll, and I thought, "why not", so I tried to think of all the possible goals one could have for the football program. With our poll format, you can only pick one, so pick the one that you think is the most important.

I had room for one other answer, and I thought that, after I made the poll, maybe I should have included "all of the above". I think all are important.

LC, can you edit the poll to include "all of the above"? I would have to think that would be the most popular choice.
Ironically, of the choices you presented winning the MACC might be the least important.

I said MAC Championship - because many of the options you include there are accomplished with winning often.

The most important goal for Ohio football program and the reason why it will never be cancelled is it brings money into the community. There is the 7-8 million dollars of revenue and support that wouldn't exist without the program but the amount of revenue it brings in for the hotels, restaurants, shops, gas stations is about twice that amount. A few hotels would not exist without Ohio Football and the tax revenue it brings in. Basketball while important for revenue too without the football program wouldn't have MAC membership and The Convo never would have been built.

Unfortunately, once a poll has been created you can edit the post, but not the poll answers. I would agree that "all of the above" would have been my answer.

That was part of what I envisioned in the "bridges town and gown" answer. By bringing money into the community, it ties the University and the town together with a common economic interest.

Guys, seriously...some of you have been athletes. There is only one reason you take the field or court or whatever...TO WIN. Now, not saying all those other things aren't nice but they are more means to the end. At the end of the day, I bet even FS&Co have as their #1 Goal to win a MACC. I'd be shocked if it was any of the other thing. For example, yes they want kids to graduate and have good grades and rep the U and I agree with all that. But, when they go out there on Saturday I am sure they are thinking of none of those things. I am sure they are thinking: Let's Win!

I selected build closer ties with alums. They are the ones buying hotel rooms and not townies.

I don't think there is any question what the primary goal is for the athletes, and you're right, they want to win (though they also want to make it to the NFL, stay healthy, etc.). But the University has it's own goals that are separate from those of the athletes, and that was what the poll was designed to address.

If it's like most other locker rooms at OHIO, goal number 1 is "Earn a degree from Ohio University"

Splitting hairs...again, when you go out on that field you are not thinking about getting your degree. You are thinking about doing what it takes to win.
So, anybody know what's up on the walls in our locker room?
And, L.C., I didn't see the question saying: What does the University Administration have as its goal for football? The question above is simply: What is the most important goal for Ohio football?

I guess I won't apply for a job at Gallup or Pew Research just yet. ;)

Sorry, sports fans, your reasoning is very poor.
The only distinct reason for a football program is to win football games--because all of the other things can be accomplished outside of having a football program.
How can you miss something so obvious.

Suppose you consider the question from another perspective. If one of the goals was never to be achieved, which one would you NOT want it to be? For me the answer to that is clear, which is "To represent the University well, on and off the field". I would never sacrifice it for any of the other goals, and that was why it got my vote.

There you go sports fans. Starts to put the question in a better form. Would you rather win a MACC but not represent the school well or represent the school well on the field (win games, go to bowls, play clean) and off (grades, good citizens, good embassadors of the school) but never quite achieve a MACC. No cop out about "I want all students to be good people." What do you want in a team if only one scenario was allowed. The answer is obvious.

That may explain why we play a weak OOC schedule. I might add that you need to win the "right" way, not bringing disgrace to the university.

This is just silliness and deflection. At best, it's hot stove to kill the time.
Coach gets credit for running a pretty 'clean' program. But that's kind of a baseline.
So the good news is it's time for MACC.

This reminds me of the guy who took his dog for a walk. They came to a 'T' intersection and the guy starting going to the left.
His dog turned to him and said, "Hey, we always go to the left. Let's go to the right.'
Hey, his dog was talking to him!

I think you overstate the financial case. We have four weekend games. Two of those are special weekends - homecoming and parents weekend. I A or I AA football would fill the stadium for both of those. No hotel in Athens keeps it's doors open because of 10 nights related to football games.

That revenue really can make a big difference and can be the deciding factor when making a decision on whether or not to build a new hotel.
