Historically, however, Ohio has not had great luck hiring football coaches who have been able to win consistently. I'm wondering the reasons why people believe what they believe. Hiring a coach that is better than Solich would be a statistical unlikelihood, I would guess, by a rather large margin. I don't think that "It's all random chance and it's Ohio's turn applies" because only a part of it is chance. I do think that 50 years is a long time and that chance does dictate that we probably won't go another 50 years without a MACC (that would be a century - In Cubs territory). My answer would be that Ohio will win another, hopefully in the next few years with Solich and if not then hopefully Schaus will find the right coach, and if not we'll probably win one eventually sooner or much, much later. You are right that it starts up front and the amount of athletic 300 pound lineman available these days is unprecedented when compared to 20 years ago. Solich to his credit has been able to take advantage and load up on the lines but there is so much more quality out there these days. Secondly, when I first started following Ohio the question I used to get was is the MAC a 1-A or 1-AA conference? It was a borderline FCS conference in the eyes of some with a lower ceiling and couldn't compete in the living room with CUSA and the Big East. The MAC today is perceived more like the AAC particularly as you get to the top programs and Ohio is the most popular school in the MAC. The case is strong for Ohio as the best academic school in the MAC but in terms of overall popularity there is no question. Solich himself has said the goal is to be in the Top 25 with regularity so even he knows he is underachieving. Solich is a great coach, who has somewhat underachieved at Ohio. His achilles heel has been the QB position, he has put numberous players in the NFL and coached up a lot of players, but he has lost way more big games than he has won. He has finally started to address the Albin situation, albeit Albin is still here, Solich has callled out the play-calling. If we can land a good QB and play to win instead of playing not to lose than the sky is the limit. Solich has coached in a national championship game at Nebraska and been here for 12 years, so he should have the best recruiting classes. I like the incoming class, but years previous, we signed a lot of afterthoughts and along with some headliners that had no chance of qualifying, they could be called the all head fake team. Ohio does not need a fly-by-night, row-your-boat opportunist, or someone who is going to suddenly change the direction of the program overnight. Ohio, as an institution, has been around long enough to have formed their own identity. As a Fan, I like to think of our sports programs as tough, relentless, and dangerous. We may not win them all, but you know that you have been in a Hell of a Cat fight when you play us. I would like to see Ohio continue to build upon their conditioning and weight training programs and recruit athletes who are durable, passionate, and who love nothing more than putting a helmet on someone. I am not interested in innovative offensive and defensive schemes, but team oriented players who continue to identify with our own unique brand of Athleticism that has been on display through out the years from wresting to Volleyball to even Hockey. The Attack Cat needs to become a national monument that evokes both a blend of respect and terror through out the NCAA. The Brand, known as a Ohio, needs to be at center stage and not an individual coach or athlete that is only around temporarily and then gone. Look at the facts at OHIO and no other conclusion makes sense. Those same facts strongly indicate that there will be no MACC under his tenure. The next coach may not win a MACC. Who can know. But it's very unlikely that we'll descend to the horrid that we were for so many years. Certainly, those who point to how the program and facilities have been vastly improved under Solich would say that the next coach has a base for success. Solich is a good coach. What was I thinking, you can't just bestow greatness on anybody, greatness is earned. I have been medi'd. You have to admit though, we lost all of our running backs and db's and three qb's and almost won the MAC last year. Solich did a great job last year. Nobody despises to lose more than I do. You aren't from Ohio and don't realize the popularity of the school. For some its the hills and hunting ground of SEO, for others its the respect it has a solid party school. I've had people who haven't even gone to college can mention something about the Shaq of the MAC or going to an Ohio football game. AJ Ouellette grew up in the backyard of Miami and ends up walking on at Ohio. That should tell you something. My Uncle who was a former Division II player raised his kids just 15 miles from Miami yet sent his sons to the Cincinnati camps and to UC games. Miami is that pretty boy in guess jeans and abercrombie that people love to hate. Grassroot support for Ohio is another positive for recruiting that is hard to perceive if you don't live in Ohio or in a nearby location. I would ask yourself how can WVU go on a run and content for a national title in the Big East using Slaton and White two lightly recruited prospects, while Ohio in a better recruiting state couldn't go on a run. What could Rich Rod do with a player like Isaiah Cox? He was able to put an offense in to maximize use of undersized players. The ceiling at Ohio is high because lineman have become the great equalizer. Boise State was able to develop lines capable of challenging for a national title. You don't need to have SEC caliber skill players so long as you are getting blocks and protection from your line. Solich has not in the past taken a Cox, Papi or Daz type recruit and tap into their full potential. A more dynamic offensive HC might be able to do it. In the context of program ceiling I would say yes. At its apex Ohio could have a short run like WVU, Boise, NIU, Houston with a couple years of in or almost into a New Year's Bowl. Both Isaiah Cox and Papi White we recruited over Southern Miss. That would be unthinkable 20 years ago and now we're regularly beating them on the trail. We are on national Tv more than a lot of AAC and ACC programs. It doesn't matter too much how the MAC finishes; Boise State was a one program show in the terrible WAC and was ranked #3 in the country. A lot of opinions. Some great, some head scratchers for sure. Mainly the one about the MAC being comparable to the AAC and not wanting an innovative offense. Sorry guy, the athletes that can turn this program into MAC champions are the same kids who love the flashy uniforms and the Blur-like offenses (see Oregon '07-'15). With that being said, Frank has lifted OU into a consistent contender in the MAC East. However, in year 13*? I think it's time that we as a fan base can start raising the bar for success. No matter how selfish that sounds, I find it very important that if we want to see the Cats start winning games that matter we need to think about pressuring the coaching staff to start winning the big ones. The foundation has been set, the facilities have been modified, the talent is arguably here already. I think the development of a quarterback and poor play-calling/scheme is what is holding the program back now. The quicker Tim Albin is canned, the quicker we can start to raise the bar. In my opinion, whenever Solich steps down I want the program to sign an FCS head coach who is ready to make the jump to the next level. On the other hand, I'm very interested in Ryan Day, the new QB coach at OSU who is a Chip Kelly guy. Has a ton of great ties around college football and could maybe one day become a pretty great coach. That too could lead to a young coach hopping out of here within a few years of success. I thought the intent was to stir things up in the offseason with this poll so I responded in a stirred up manner to play along. My answer is Ohio is not far off the average AAC or ACC program anymore with its brand and its ability to compete in the postseason. We are up a level from where we were back in 2000 in regard to the above so any future coaching situation has to be viewed through the lens of what we are today, not what we were.
