I cant imagine someone selling their bowl ring. Priceless memories of hard work and dedication. What really caught my attention is that it is several hundred dollars more than the Texas Tech Cotton Bowl ring? How so?

Even if I was homeless and out of luck, I dont think I could pawn or sell my 2006 ring. Just lets me know at one point in my life, I was apart of something special. Just my opinion tho....

Well, good thing he's not trading it for a tattoo. That would be unforgivable.

Those are just the prices people are asking, and may not reflect at all how much they're really worth.

Could have been lost or stolen and trying to be resold after a secondary purchase. Those rings have no where near that value.

Having been indirectly involved with the 2006 ring design and purchase, it is priced 5 to 6 times retail value.

It might have belonged to someone like a student trainer, rather than an actual player.

If someone took enough time, they could likely figure out who it belonged to if it was someone on the roster. You can see the bottom of the first letter(s), and the last.

The person selling this ring seems to be in the business of selling this ring. This was likely a pawn shop purchase (how it got there though?), however lots of times these things are stolen. This guy is based out of New Jersey. Interesting username too.

Wonder what size the ring is?

I still have all the trinkets from the '68 MAC Championship season and would never part with any of them...ring included.

I felt the same way about mementos of my high school jock days - until a couple years ago when I donated all of them to my school's Alumni Archives. Now, with other archival items, they are displayed for public viewing at various functions. I feel good that other folks are getting to see such displays that are intended to strengthen bonds between students and alums for years to come.

Speaking of "trinkets" ,as I've said before,I played soccer for O.U. in the mid 70's.

I transferred before I got my letter jacket.

Always bothered me.

A few years ago O.U. started Varsity Ohio for former varsity athletes.

A couple of years ago Varsity Ohio started offering letter sweaters and jackets.

So +/- 40 years after playing for O.U. I got my letter jacket.

May sound dumb but, putting it on for the first time was one of the proudest moments of my life.

+1

I fully understand your emotions about that jacket. I glad you finally got.

My wife is now a member of Varsity OHIO. She was inducted a few years ago, when they retroactively made her synchronized swimming group a varsity sport. In this case, though, it is her husband who is most proud of it, and reminds her to wear her Varsity OHIO pin at appropriate occasions. She kind of acts like the whole thing is a big joke, and she denigrates the athleticism that was necessary for the various complex routines that the Dolphin club did "back in the day."

The bigger question to me is why would anyone buy that ring? They didn't earn the the right to wear or own it.

Regarding varsity jackets, I bought one in 1978 after I lettered. I tried to buy one with leather sleeves but at that time, all that Funk & Whaley's were selling were sleeves made out of some synthetic material. Those sleeves have disintegrated and it's a shame.

You'd be surprised how many people wear rings they didn't earn. I see them all the time on guys in hotel bars trying to impress fellow male travelers. Sad and that's coming from someone who has been in the scholastic products business for 33 years.
