I'm seeing some comments in my regular sports blogs this morning about how last night's Rose Bowl was the best ever. Hyperbole in journalism is a pet peeve of mine, and IMO the 2006 Rose Bowl is tough to top in terms of the greatest college football game of all time, let alone best Rose Bowl.

So let's take BA's pulse on the matter. What is the best Rose Bowl of all time? 2017 or 2006?

(I left an "other" option just in case someone has a different idea...the '97 Rose Bowl with osu beating Arizona State in the final minute to deny ASU a national title was a good one too, but I still don't think it is anywhere close to topping '06....but reasonable minds can disagree....)

That 2006 Rose Bowl had more on the line, so better game IMO.

That game had so many twists and turns, bad calls and bonehead plays and then an all-timer of a performance from Vince Young. Plus Keith Jackson was doing the PBP. Gotta love that.

Underrated great Rose Bowl that doesn't get nearly enough love: the 2005 Rose Bowl when Vince Young had his coming out party the year prior. Texas beats Michigan 38-37 on a walk-off field goal. Stats were off the charts that game.

Chad Henne (MICH): 18-34 for 227 yards and 4 TDs, no INTs
Michael Hart (MICH): 21 carries for 83 yards
Braylon Edwards (MICH): 10 catches 109 yards and 3 TDs
Steve Breaston (MICH): 3 catches for 77 yards and 1 TD; 6 KO returns for 221 yards
Garret Rivas (MICH): 4/4 XPs, 3/3 FGs

Vince Young (TEX): 16-28 for 180 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT; 21 carries for 192 yards and 4 TDs

He accounted for every score other than the game-winning FG, but he led that drive.

Very possible that this Rose Bowl was a preview for next year's national title game, or a playoff game. Both of these teams bring a lot back.

+1. Definitely have to the leaders heading into turn 1.

I personally enjoyed the 2012 game between Oregon and Wisconsin. It was one of those games where whoever had the ball last would win. It was a pretty high scoring game in its own right (45-38) and Wisconsin was driving for the tie (or win perhaps if they had gone for two) and the Ducks forced a late fumble to seal the win. A QB named Russell Wilson played for Wisconsin in the game. De'Anthony Thomas had some incredible runs for Oregon, including a 91 yard scamper that is still one of the more impressive displays I have ever watched live.

I think Penn State was better than OSU at the end of this season, but I don't think Penn State beats OSU next year to win the Big Ten. Ohio State had one of the youngest teams in the nation this year. I have a hard time seeing anyone knocking them off in conference.

I say Texas - USC only because I think that was the National title game.

Penn State gets virtually everyone back also. The Big Ten East as a whole is gonna be a whole bunch of fun, especially if Michigan State returns to form.

I remember a Rose Bowl played in the '60s that pitted USC and Wisconsin. USC moved out smartly, taking a 42-14 lead.

Then Wisconsin, behind QB Ron Vanderkellen, got rolling and closed to 42-37 and, I believe, might have well prevailed had time not expired.

Those teams in Tallahassee and Tuscaloosa may have something to say about it.

I was all sorts of wrong about Penn State not deserving to be in the playoff.

They are both pretty young themselves and will return a lot. Question will be how well will Clemson do withouth Watson as he is a remarkable talent. He did a good job of making everyone kind of forget about Tahj Boyd. Dabo seems to have a pretty strong program in the Blue Ridge, though.

There's no answer to this debate.

The youth and so abundant talent of Darnold...what he did yesterday, especially at key moments....lends cachet to yesterday's game.

What a talent he appears to be.

Did I miss something, or did PSU not give up 50 points to a lesser ranked opponent in almost every metric. And based on that they belonged? If anything we've seen that this year Clemson and Bama' are just that much better than the field.

I think they score a point against Clemson, at least. I think they lose 50-30, but I think they score a point.

Never know, OSU should have scored a point too, but it did not happen.

That's my takeaway from this. At least the CFP allowed the two best teams to be there. I'm sure someone has done the work, but what matchup would the BCS have yielded? Also Alabama/Clemson?

I seriously underestimated how much OSU's 31-0 embarrassment has psyched out BillyTheBuckeye. He takes a completely benign remark about Penn State's quality as a slight to his beloved Buckeyes that must be defended. *laugh emoji here*

No, it's just laughable at the continued penis envy that keeps popping up.

This is definitely one of those years where the old BCS system would've produced the desired match-up (which, funny enough, about 80 percent of the time the two-team title system worked just fine).

Really all the new system did is create a +1 scenario which everyone wanted so badly.
