I believe this has been discussed in previous threads. I am in Columbus and see more and more of the OHIO name in scarlet and gray on all sorts of OSU gear. I am not sure if this is officially licensed or not. Was this covered in the previous suit in regards to the OHIO name on college gear?

Every time I see that script OHIO logo on a shirt I think they are wearing Bobcat attire.

The people buying that junk are just denying royalties to tOSU rather than violating any kind of trademark on Ohio gear. There's no way to trademark the name of a state in a generic font that happens to use tOSU colors. The issue I have is when tOSU makes royalties on crap like this:

I know the founder of that store graduated from (the real) Ohio and I don't fault him for trying to make a buck, but it sucks that the behemoth in Columbus is using the name of our university in a variety of places with impunity, and in the above cases making money to do so.

Additionally, whenever I hear "O-H" . . . "I-O", I respond with "BOBCATS". I've even taught some of my students (who want extra credit) to do the same at school pep rallies.

Speaking of OHIO gear,my wife and I were in Columbus Airport today,after spending a very enjoyable weekend in Athens.

Noticed a couple of the stores that sell OSU stuff,also had some O.U. items.

Leaving Bengal game today some douche kept saying "OH.....IO". Was actually getting very little response, so I talked with him for a few minutes about the difference between the real Ohio and OSU.....he was dumbfounded that I was from the state of Ohio but didn't like OSU and couldn't comprehend that I graduated from Ohio but didn't support OSU. Crazy the sheep. He wasn't a grad.

Yeah, two things going on here. One is the red and grey stuff with "Ohio" on it, put out by companies trying to make a dollar without licensing any OSU trademarks. The other is stuff like the Homage shirts that are licensed by OSU. The problem there is I believe the lenient deal we agreed to with OSU let them continue using "Ohio" in certain contexts, e.g. cheers (OH - IO) and "script Ohio," both of which you see on the shirts in the links previously posted. Hell, they even trademarked the image of people spelling OHIO with their arms above their heads. I blame Glidden for signing off on an agreement which gives Columbus A&M way too much latitude.

P.S. TOSU has decided not only does the agreement's verbiage about them being able to use Ohio for "cheers" and for "Script Ohio" give them the right to license tee shirts to that effect, they also reckon they can apply the same logic to athletic uniforms:

I too have noticed a lot of progress in seeing Ohio merchandise in a lot more places. Our logo is recognizable too, I think. My dad was wearing an Ohio fleece jacket on a recent trip we took to Asheville, North Carolina and he got a lot of "Go Bobcats!" or "OU!." A Toledo fan even stopped us to talk about the upcoming game (this was before our historic win).

Since we will never sniff membership in one of those conferences the struggle will continue.

Those I know who went to OSU know full and well who Ohio is and understand the difference. It is mainly the hordes of fans who maybe have never been on campus and are frankly meathead d-bags who can't/won't understand the difference. Every large college/pro team has them. Crazy thing is I would guess there are more Ohio grads/fans living in Metro Columbus than any other large population center.

Why don't we win a MAC Championship and have a really good team!

Maybe that will bring OHIO alumni and friends to awareness of OHIO FOOTBALL.

I wonder if they are getting away with the gymnastic uniform because it is "script OHIO". Or if the powers at OU just don't care.

It's very clear from the letter of the agreement that the "Script Ohio" exception referred to the band's use of the formation. It seems it is clearly time for our lawyers and theirs to have another face-to-face meeting.

Saw something great on Twitter on Saturday...

Apparently during the end of the Michigan-Indiana game, the Michigan students started chanting "We want Ohio" and some ESPN schlub tweeted that out.

I can't remember who it was, but a Bobcat fan tweeted back to the original poster "To lose to Ohio in the NCAA Tournament again?"

That really is it in a nutshell. It's about presumed "ownership" of the state, and it's backed up by tOSU and its casual fans. This is the only state where this happens, but it's also an odd state with so many FBS programs and only one in the Power 5.

Then again, it is not surprising that a university largely founded to smother other schools is smothering other schools. The very founding of tOSU posed an existential threat to both Ohio and Miami. First through Rutherford Hayes' dismissive attitude toward Ohio and Miami. And later every other state school in Ohio was hamstrung by the Eagleson Bill, which mandated that only tOSU could grant post-graduate degrees and conduct research.

While the Eagleson Bill is obviously no more, it put every other state school decades behind in many ways, including athletics.

I'm of the opinion that our marketing has gotten the max out of faithful alumni/friends and those who live near Athens. But, perhaps because marketing and pricing brings them in, they are as moribund as can be. No live fan enthusiasm.

Winning a MAC will pay off most in the year after we do it, most likely--unless we have a winning season as WMU this year and NIU a few years back--national attention via no losses. (Or NIU's first game was a close loss to a ranked team.)

3) Build it and they will OHIO.

I don't think one big win will do that. Get a MACC.

And do it now.

I love Homage clothing and appreciate an alum promoting Ohio by making high quality Bobcat apparel. I was in the Easton store over the weekend and bought two shirts, neither of which was an Ohio product.

I know some stuff is close, but I didn't see any glaring trademark violations because you cannot trademark the generic name Ohio. This guy has started a legitimate business with some of the coolest Ohio Bobcat apparel available. Bobcat fans aren't buying enough of it to pay the rent on his corner lot at Easton. I don't care what else he is selling to help his business grow.

I bought a shirt that had a picture of Larry Bird with wings that says Massachussets State Bird. Add in the fact that it's softer than any of my cashmere sweaters, and I think it's underpriced.
