Back in the day when I'd post every so often, the one thing that riled me up a little was the proliferation of bowl games (with bargain quality sponsors) and the whole "everybody gets a trophy" mentality surrounding them. I'd joke about people being excited about Ohio playing in the Family Dollar Bowl...

I don't endorse the furry lifestyle, but when the Bobkitten is involved things can change mighty quickly...

I'm torn whether we want a banner at Peden declaring that we are Dollar General Bowl champions. Yes, I want us to win. But do we really need a banner?

You gotta wonder what the trophy will be like. Thin plastic, so light you can lift it with one finger? Made in China?

Bowls like the one in Mobile should have their own recurring name that they can keep so that the sponsor of the bowl seems secondary. Call it the Gulf Coast Bowl or the Oil Spill Bowl (easy to find BP sponsorship there) and let that name carry on even as the sponsorship changes. It could at least build up a little cachet and tradition for the game.

Of course their name would be on it, but it sounds better if the bowl itself has some sort of local moniker. The FedEX Orange Bowl is still the Orange Bowl and will remain so even if FedEx quits. (btw, has a study ever been completed about the return on investment for such sponsorships or stadium naming rights? Very curious)

I thought Motor City Bowl was a cool name, but when Ford was no longer the sponsor, they dropped the "bowl" name and just went sponsor only. It certainly could have been the Little Caesars Motor City Bowl. It was still in the Motor City.

I'm all with you here, my man! Just so long as it's the Pabst Blue Ribbon Bowl or the some other brand associated with our SEO socioeconomic roots, and not a craft beer. The Jackie O's Fire Fly Amber Ale Bowl just does not have a great ring to it.

Since we have a lot of wise historians within our ranks here...

When did it start becoming common for corporate sponsors to tack on their names on the bowl games?

I can think of a few bowl games that had pretty classic names replaced completely by the name of the sponsor. I welcome any corrections!

Tangerine Bowl became the Russell Athletic Bowl

Citrus Bowl became the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl

The Hall of Fame Bowl became the Outback Bowl

The Continental Tire Bowl became the Meineke Car Care Bowl then became the Belk Bowl

The Humanitarian Bowl became the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (a name upgrade in my opinion)

The Gator Bowl became the Taxslayer Bowl

The Peach Bowl became the Chick-fil-A Bowl then became the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl

Shall we start a BA all time most ridiculous bowl game names list?

Too many bowls, IMO. The MACC was our bowl game. It's like playing in the CIT or CBI. I'm not fond of those, either.

I hear you, I was hoping for Miami also and the date certainly caused some holiday plan juggling, but before we show disrespect to our bowl sponsor, check out their financial performance. I'm not a stock analyst but it appears they've been doing fairly well. (NYSE symbol: DG) In fact, the trend has been upward until August of this year shortly after they announced they would be sponsoring this bowl when the stock price plummeted over $20 a share. (Hopefully, just a coincidence.) It appears small prices mean big (and good) business.

Let's remember:

The payout last year was $750,000. Much higher than the $100,000 the RayCom Camellia Bowl paid out. I haven't heard this will change.

A bowl game means 15 more practices which give us a leg up over non-bowl attending teams for next year.

We will see, but just because the store sells "affordable" merchandise, doesn't mean they'll cheap out on the bowl experience for the players or the fans. This is an existing bowl, and as had been mentioned, one of the top ones for a MAC team to attend.

I've never been to Mobile, AL, but many on BA have mentioned they had a great time last time they went to this bowl and they seem to have many events all week leading up to the game so I'm looking forward to checking out what I can.

This is a prime time bowl at 8 pm EST on a Friday night on ESPN, and not ESPN2 or ESPNU.

I also think Mobile is missing the boat by not getting something significant in the naming like "The Dollar General Celebration Bowl" or "The Dollar General Mardis Gras Bowl" since I hear that Mobile is big on Mardis Gras celebrations and puts on a Mardis Gras parade just for this bowl.
