Needs swift resolution. Any Academy graduates out there? What might a cadet expect for violation of the honor code that "a cadet will not lie, cheat or steal or tolerate those who do?" I would hope there is a player honor committee or something of the equivalent.

Honor committee - this one will be resolved by the criminal justice system once we can get the prosecutor out of the steakhouses.

Alan, you are absolutely correct. However, teams need some form of peer leadership structure that expects, no, demands honorable behavior within the team. JMHO.

ANews headline "Two OU footballers among three arrested in alleged robbery"
Ethical headline "Three arrested in alleged robbery"

First paragraph: "Three Ohio University students, including two who play on Ohio’s football team, were jailed on charges of first-degree felony aggravated robbery early Wednesday morning."

ANews writers/editor portray themselves as well-meaning/innocent journalist, but they have clear agenda that prevents bias-free reporting. Do not confuse this as criticism, as I respect small business and understand there is a very real market for a tabloid in Athens.

I disagree on calling out the ANews specifically. This would and does get reported that way for other outlets in college towns and pro towns.

Could not agree more and I'm sure we do hence the tremendous reduction in behavior like this over the last 5 or 6 years. It's Wednesday of finals week - time to either be in bed or in the books. It's a shame that rather than the focus being on the upcoming bowl game it now shifts to the ills and evils of big time athletics.

Agreed. Entire industry is a joke. I've called out The Post before, and will continue to do so, although they get a bit of a pass since they have the "still learning" defense.

It's two players from an 85+ person organization. Their actions will likely result in immediate dismissal, but it doesn't define the program. College football is a sport full of 18-23 year old alpha males that are cheered for aggressive behavior on the field. It's not unique to the sport to have problems like this. It doesn't excuse the behavior, but I expect problems to surface occasionally. Even the teams with the highest level of personal accountability, the service academies, have all had players in trouble. Sometime the idiots aren't identified until they're already in the program.

Felony robbery with a firearm specification is a little past the realms of any "Honor committee".

And they have that, but you can't save every apple from going bad. So I'm not sure what your point is. OHIO has a leadership program, both in the football program and among the student athlete population, and it's a good one with lots of quality programming and work. However, in a case like this they are inconsequential as the felony is immediate ban and removal from campus.

You don't really understand the concept of newsworthiness, do you?

By your measure, headlines on Nov. 23, 1963 would have read "Man shot in head in Dallas."

By the way, we have a long history of athletes breaking into dorm rooms, apartments, etc. after students have left Athens for the holidays. Even one of our esteemed posters was involved back in the mid-1980s.

As for the A-News article, I thought it was fair. Football players are more of a public figure than other students.

Well, one more. Ready is a walkon.

When you have 120 teen aged males, some will get into trouble. When they do, they should be prosecuted the same as anyone else.

Billie. My point is to generate some discussion over the behavior of these players, consequences they face, particularly as Bobcats. I thank you for adding. "OHIO has a leadership program, both in the football program and among the student athlete population, and it's a good one with lots of quality programming and work." So much is possible as a Bobcat athlete. In my estimation a lot to lose through such actions. Also, in my experience those who are all in and doing well do not go out to do this. Usually those who do these things, for one reason or another, already have one foot out the door. Makes me wonder.

Athens' finest - from the article:

“On arrival,” (Police Chief) Pyle said, “officers spoke to the driver of the vehicle, and while this was going on, the three men returned to the vehicle, saw our officers and fled. The officers instinctively knew a crime had been (or was about to be) committed so they chased the three.”

Athens is blessed to have officers with such natural instincts. You can't teach those kind of things, it's instinctual I tell ya.

Also from the article:

"The police chief said officers caught two of the men but as of late Wednesday afternoon, one remained at large, even though police knew his identity."

Monroe will use this as evidence of poor recruiting...superior talent would have outrun the police.

+1 At least 1-2% will do something stupid, you just have to hope that it is not something crazy
