10?

by beating Ball St(4-4), Kent St(3-6), Buffalo(2-6) and Toledo(6-2)? Hardly. Would be surprised if they break #15.

I think it'd be less about who they beat and more about two teams in front of them losing each week.

It's hard to say. Their schedule so far has been better than I think the poll voters have been probably giving them credit for. The committee will go through every little detail and give them credit for it but it puts A LOT of emphasis on schedule so some other teams with much lesser records and really hard schedules may jump them.

Wyoming is about to beat Boise State so odds are Ohio would be in a position to rob itself and everyone else in the MAC of a lot of $$$. There is a lot that could happen between now and then,

I may be greedy but I don't pay the bills for Ohio or the MAC so I would rather see the Bobcats take them down then see them go to a major bowl as the G5 rep!

Western's win over Northwestern would have really shot up their resume had the Wildcats pulled out a win in Columbus today. Even in defeat I think NW earned some respect in many eyes today and that should figure in the Fighting Flecks favor.

another of my deadhorsii: It is so incredibly difficult to go undefeated, no matter what a team's schedule is, that a team which does so is certainly in the top 10. Very, very few teams go undefeated.

Personally, I'd have them in the top five, at least.

This, no matter how MAC-weak their schedule is.

WMU might face prejudice from NIU's not so good performance against Florida State in 2012 (10-31 loss)--but that NIU squad was a one-loss team (lost its first game vs. Iowa by one point).

Top five. Thanks so much for your opinion. I needed a good laugh.

I agree that going undefeated is tough, only 1 team does it each year. There would be a lot more undefeated teams if they played 95th rated schedules like WMU.

On a similar note, why wouldn't the Luckeyes fall in the rankings after winning in OT (double digit favorite), losing to Penn State and squeeking one out (at home) against Northwestern?

WMU will never crack the Top 10 in the "new" era of Power 5. It's not good for TV and the $ystem.

Shame.

If an undefeated WMU meets Ohio in the MACC and WMU loses, is WMU's season a failure?

If not, a season without a MAC title can be successful, yes?

If so, one single loss to an Ohio team could turn what could have been a top 5 team into the category of a failed season?

I think they crack the top 10...too hard to deny a team which is undefeated. That "0" is too hard to deny.

But I definitely agree about "TV and the $ystem" wanting to ignore.

66--I think I can prove it. Has any team with the 95th or worse schedule ever gone undefeated? It is EXTREMELY difficult to go undefeated no matter what one's schedule. So, I honor it.

Stunter--Good question. Would I be satisfied with an undefeated season but a loss in the MAC title game? That's so magical, that I think so.

(But this staff has never come anywhere close to that so it's just you & me being theoretical.)

Ball State was ranked in the high teens around this time in '08, just like WMU is now (currently #17 in AP). BSU was #12 for the MAC championship and I'd bet WMU will get at least that high if they win out. If I had to pick a number, I'd pick...#11.

Hey, Monroe, I said it's difficult. I agree with you on that one. Logic just tells me that's it's easier to win out with a weak schedule than a strong one. In a normal decade I doubt that there's more than 3-4 teams undefeated. I thought Utah was undefeated when they went to a big bowl -and lost- maybe Hawaii-they lost- and maybe even BYU when they won the championship by beating a weak Michigan team in a lesser bowl one year. Not sure of that, but I'm telling you that WMU has a better chance since they have a easy schedule. Get them to a major bowl and we'll see how they do. I'm not guessing that go undefeated. You use the weak schedule argument all the time to downplay ohio's wins, so why defend Westerns schedule compared to someone like Tennessee who has the second in the country.

I'm not defending WMU's schedule per se.

I don't think it's inconsistent to say that we have a weak sched while acknowledging that WMU's is not particularly rigorous and praising them for being perfect so far this season.

On the one hand, I've never asked us to be perfect...though I think one MACC in 11 years is reasonable, especially in light of how highly regarded our coach has been for the most part.

On the other hand, I respect any team--any team-- that can be 'perfect.'

Expecting us to win a MACC a reasonable amount of time, partially based on weak sched, is not tantamount to questioning the sched if a team pulls off the marvelous feat of going undefeated.

And, on the third hand, for me anyway, I'll be sad if LeBron ever leaves the Cavs but I'm 100% satisfied that he brought one title to CLE. I'd love another ring but I am good with one. Some have stated that I'd demand another and another after that...Not so.

I respect being undefeated, but WMU should not be ranked number 5 because they're undefeated right now. Prove you're #5 by beating "somebody".

they've beaten everyone in front of them, and do not choose their opponents. you can't hold kids responsible for not beating Ohio State if Ohio State won't play them.

Good for them, but it doesn't make them higher ranked just because they have wins behind their names. Don't make it out to be something about the poor "kids". Look at it this way, we have one if the top 37 records in the FBS. Are we in the best 37 teams in the country because we have that record?

Going undefeated is a marvelous feat.

Plenty of schools have strength of scheds that aren't notably high.

But very, very, very few of them go undefeated.

Because it's extremely difficult over a long season.

So, accomplishing it deserves major respect in the form of a very high ranking.

WMU could have reached top 10 by now if they beat a ranked team on their schedule. One loss big boy schools will ranker higher (Louisville, Ohio State, even Michigan if they lose to OSU) because of the SOS. Examples this year was when unranked Wisconsin became #10 after the LSU upset and unranked NAVY entering top 25 after beating #6 Houston (albeit a lose the previous week to Air Force). The committee may rank them as high as #8 or #9 if they win out but they wont crack top 5.

Any they won two true road games at B1G opponents, P5 schools, which is more than at least one P5 ranked team can say.

If Western Mich wins out to the MAC Championship game...and plays Ohio...

Every other member of the MAC (and, secretively, a few Ohio administrators and non-football coaches) will be rooting for WMU to win and go to a BC$ bowl.

Well they're 8th by USA Today and 11th by CBS Sports so they're trending up in the only wins matter polls that most of you seem to like. Let's see how the FBS committee sees it tomorrow.
