Thought some of you would enjoy reading this interview with Brian Burke's son, Shawn. It contains several nice mentions of OHIO, where the junior Burke played tennis, and received his master's degree in sports administration.

Here's one interesting quote to tweak your interest:

"I played college tennis at Ohio. I played 4-5-6 singles and 2-3 doubles. They were the best years of my life those college years being an athlete, there at Ohio."

Viewer Warning: This interview contains references to Dick Bestwick, my least favorite football coach of all time.

Thanks for sharing. I don't recall Shawn, but knew his sisters. As far as Dick Bestwick, has he ever given a clear reason for his departure at Marshall?

In a word, "No." Under the circumstances, there was really no acceptable explanation that could be given short of a family tragedy, which was not the case. The next choice, Jack Lengyel, certainly was an honorable man who did the best that could be expected. His personality, though, was nothing like that portrayed in the "We are Marshall!" movie.

Why no acceptable reason? Perhaps he came in expecting the administration to make a certain commitment to him and his staff and found them to be lacking? The movie certainly made it seem like the admin toyed with the idea of shuttering the program. Perhaps he encountered some of the characters from Huntington who had contributed to previous recruiting scandals? Maybe he realized it was a bad fit for all parties...

Nice try to rationalize this behavior. If you'd been at his introduction as the new coach in Veterans Memorial Fieldhouse, where he received a standing O that lasted a very long time, with tears streaming down the faces of many when he accepted the position publicly and said what he was going to do to bring the program back, you might conjecture in a different direction. Also, not everything in that movie was correct. It might surprise you to learn that they Hollywoodized things in several instances. He made a commitment and then backed out a few weeks later. In normal circumstances that would just have been a little blip. In this particular situation it was like a knife in the back. If you don't understand that, there's nothing that I can say to make you come down from the seat of the scornful.
