Message Not Read  What is the future?
   Posted: 9/5/2016 9:08:56 PM
I'm bumping a thread form last year. Have I missed some news, or is Frank in the last year of his contract? Historically he was always extended - 2 years out.

Therefore, I think the path is clear. He finishes out the contract and then retires - with an announcement coming before Halloween.

Additionally, McDavis is stepping down next June. While tradition would more point to a new president wanting to have a voice in a new football coach, I think McDavis' enthusiasm for the athletic program would lead him to want to help identify Frank's successor. McDavis was involved in getting Frank - change the trajectory of the program. I think he will value a role in the next step.

I'm a bit surprised the subject (re: his contract) has been dormant.

Thoughts?

I thought they extended Frank's contract again last year. That isn't to say that that he will necessarily stay that long, however.

Show me the announcement. Nothing online. Nothing at the athletic website. I don't think they did an extension.

The future is that time period which has not yet occurred.

I had a recollection that they quietly extended it last year after the NIU game, but I can't find anything online, either. I guess I'll just wait and see.

I don't have time to find it right now but I know I read an Arkley article in the last month or two that said Frank's contract auto-extends every year so he always has (I think) 2 years remaining. Could have been one oh his Bobcat Blogs and not a print article.

Found overview of his contract and extensions online

https://hkm.com/football/contracts/frank-solich /

https://hkm.com/football/wp-content/uploads/coach-contrac...

The contact shows all the extensions. The final page is about "Merit Increases" each year - signed in 2013. Not a lawyer/contract lawyer, so perhaps someone smarter can provide input.

That said, the website has not been updated this off-season --- Babers still at BG.

This brings up my fear, i.e. the new president demotes athletics way down his priority list.

Frank's contract will conclude when he is in the grave.

If the new prez. is not into sports they would be an idiot.

The Frank years have been about building. Building tradition with bowl games and division titles. Building facilities starting with turning Peden into a football operations center then therapy pools, IPF, new lockers and next academic center and players lounge. In the time that Frank has been here a MAC team has gone from needing to finish in the Top 6 (something the MAC has never done) for a major bowl to Top 16 and now its splitting a major bowl bid with the champions of the AAC, MWC, SBC and CUSA. MAC midweek TV deal started right around when Frank started and this year has 8 FB games national broadcast, possibly more with game of the week selections. What Ohio will have in just a few years is more to work with on the recruiting front than any program in the history of the MAC. The question is could the next coach at Ohio be able to use the resources to be able to take the next step on the recruiting front and elevate Ohio from a 7 win a year program to 10 win program in contention for access bowls? A program that wins the East every year almost and the MAC Championship frequently? When the pundits discuss the MAC be the first program that comes to mind? I think all of this is not only possible but likely with the next HC.

Are you saying that Solich built most of this?

I'd say that much of this happened while he was here, around him but didn't have much to do with him (bowl bid, tv deal). He may have influenced donors or funding for our facilities.

That said, our progress seems in reverse in recent years.

I want now a coach who can take advantage of the opportunities..to get us to a MAC title.

Frank was a very good hire for Ohio in 2004 and what the program had to work with at that time. I've said for a while we are due for staff upgrade as Solich's program has fallen back into the pack and to make the most out of new opportunities. McDavis is not going to fire him as an outgoing president and the incoming president will have a learning curve when it comes to understanding what is best for the football program. He is one of two coaches over the age of 70 coaching a FBS program. He is one of these coaches that are protected because of the administrative situation at that school.

It would seem to me that Coach Solich would coach one more year after this one to allow the new Ohio University President to make their pick for football coach/AD etc. Either way, President McDavis probably won't make any kind of change while his retirement is imminent. Unless, the new president is quickly named and has input on the decision, which I would find highly unusual while President McDavis is still at the helm.

Solich getting fired?? 😂😂😂 He will name his successor. All the donations and funding he's had his hands in to get Ohio where it is today. I know some people want a MAC Championship now. I did too when I played. But to think of Solich getting fired is absurd. We've beat 2 Big Ten teams on the road in his era as well as a returning Big East champion at the time from a BCS Bowl on his home debut. Big name speakers such as his NASA 5-Star astronaut buddy that used to come to our pre-games mean a lot outside of football than just the game. He builds men. We have minor issues with the Law compared to other programs. I come from an era where we lost to Northeastern at home with a goose egg. Running dives on 1st, 2nd and 3rd down. Even when it was more than 5 yards we needed to get a 1st down. I understand college football is a "what have you done for me lately" business but I enjoy OU being a top MAC team these days rather than the "bottom-dweller" status we used to be. I understand tge expectations have raised but I'd hate to make a move like Nebraska did when the fired Solich. Just my 2 cents!

My prediction...FS will retire with 100 wins at OHIO (like it or not folks). He is at 81 now, I think.

I can't imagine Coach Solich naming his successor, subtly or not. When he decides to retire (probably next year) he will ride into the sunset much like a mythical cowboy in a western. Coach Solich is hardly about the hype and power, he is old school, like some mythical old cowboy who does his best to save the town and then moves on parts unknown. He knows his faults and failings, but does his best and then rides off into the sunset.

I have a hard time thinking Jim Schaus isn't going to let an outgoing coach pick the next head coach, that Schaus will ultimately be judged upon. Nothing against Frank at all, I just don't see it happening.

Good point. I guess I'm assuming he will be based upon the last few years his likely departure destinations coming open & being filled without him getting the spot. I hope JS is here for many years to come. But it's only a guess. We were lucky to land Frank and also lucky to have Schaus. Both will be able to say they left things better than they found it once it's time to move on.
