I thought that we were supposed to have fine speed on each side of the foot-ball. Didn't really see it beyond Papi, a person whose home is slot receiver not running his small size up the middle.

TX State seemed better prepared at key moments than we were. They had more innovation and ran their O better at key moments and seemed to be more ready on D for what we did than we were for what they did.

When will we learn that we don't do the wideout screen pass (trying to get another receiver to provide the blocking) well. Retire it. Please run some true screen passes.

How many short passes to allow them to complete? Their first drive of 2nd half, we were tight at the line of scrimmage on their receivers. Stopped them. Seemed the rest of the game we played off them. Gave them the advantage as they mostly passed short.

Windham isn't bad. But too inaccurate. Their qb gunned their last td in regulation (about a 6 yard gain but 30-35 yard throw across to the corner of the end zone) into a very small window. We don't have that--gunned and accurate. Maybe Windham will improve. But mostly today he was as erratic--good, not so good, good, not so good--as we've seen him before. Not sure the arm is there to throw the long ball on a rope instead of a cloud floater.

Worst coaching move of the day was not ours; it was TX State's not taking the 15 yard penalty after they stopped us on 3rd down late 2nd qtr...Left us the 45 yd field goal try which we made. Should've taken the penalty and made us get the 15 back on re-do of 3rd down. If they do and stop us, they win in regulation likely.

Basham seems the most over-rated player we've had in a while. I don't know if it's how we use him (doesn't seem to rush some plays because we're asking him to contain and not do anything if the play isn't run his way?....he was stellar freshmen all from the right end but we line him up a lot at right end), or his effort (vs. App State's depleted line, dominated and woofing early, injured, returned and did nothing), or other. But one way or another I'd think he'd be kind of dominant consistently. We're lucky if he has an effect a few times a game.

We're so proud of our depth at D-line--let's us keep 'em fresh by rotating in two full four man groups. To me, this doesn't seem to give us advantage. In fact, I'd be more comfortable with a guy or two who dominate a lot, so are kept in most of the time, and spelled just enough to keep them fresh.

In the 2nd quarter, Papi fair catches their booming punt as he drifts back. Faircatches at about our 5 yard line. Seriously, we don't know to not fair catch that deep in our land?

Taunting and other stupid, key penalties. As others ask: Do we hold our guys to account for these? Else, why doe they seem to keep happening? Lack of discipline. Again.

TX State's inside shovel passes. Neat play and effective the two times they used it.

About 1:18 to go 2nd quarter and they get it at about their 30. they pass, pass, make legit effort to score. We roughed the passer at the goal line to help them. They score a td. Solich would never have done anything truly legitimately calculated to get 6. He'd've thrown two short passes, hoping the receiver could break them. We'd gain a first down and 21 yards and run out the clock before we could even get in field goal position. Recruits watch; which coaching would you rather play for.

If we have a big play on O, the next play is a run by, or pass to, the same player way too often.

Experienced quarterbacks invariably have big days against us--as today. We don't get enough pass pressure at key moments. LC explains it as scheme more than talent (lots of single coverage, I guess)--I'll buy that--but how do we leave so many receivers so wide open so often.

If we're going to use single running back sets, PICK ONE RUNNING BACK AND STICK WITH HIM, MAKE HIM THE MAIN GUY. Brown and Irons both seem good. Give them a chance to get in rhythm, to get it going.

Our O-line outweighs their D-line by 70 lbs a man and we don't win this game by pounding running, controlling clock? If Tx had that advantage, we'd've gotten destroyed.

As the announcers noted, so much use of shotgun leaves teams unprepared to use under center, direct/hand-off snaps. So, left in shotgun, with qb and running back 4-5 yards back from line of scrimmage. A 1 yard line running td is really a 5-6 yard run. Freaking learn to go under center power at the goal line--start closer to the goal line. Try two backs (so it's not obvious which back will get ball) and don't run lightweight Papi at goal line.

We had 2 or 3 times when we had about a half yard to go for a first down. They stopped us about five times, and on two consecutive plays in the late 3rd or early 4th. At about that same point in the game, they had two 3rd and one's--ran for about 2.5 yards on each play for first downs against our vaunted D-line. How could we fail as they succeeded. Consider this in regard to how you'd evaluate the talent on each side before the game--or after.

Did we use two timeouts after their qb had the long run at the end of regulation (about a minute to go) that ended up with them at our 1 yard line? I know that we used one. My brother says that we used two. Seriously, we wasted our timeouts on defense there when they were about a sure thing to score a td and we would be down 4 with under a minute to go????

The announcers stated that all (I think they said all) of TX State's receivers were first time starters or first time game experience today. They sure seemed to catch the ball more readily than the receivers that we're so proud of.

Poise?

Talented players?

We can still have a fine season, though we seem to have weakness at O-line and d-back, at least. But there's no way to view today as satisfying except in meaningless ways.

+1. Well said.

I was only able to watch the 1st Quarter as I had a party to go to but I thought the same thing. When I heard that Ohio's O-line outweighed Texas State's by 70 lbs/player, I kept wondering why Ohio wasn't running the ball down Texas State's throat.

We had a 3-4 min. TOP advantage each half. With 250 yards rushing to their 100 and a 6-min advantage on TOP, I feel we pounded running and controlled the clock. The fumble when we tried to run out the clock did us in.

I've always thought the same thing.

We had 6 situations with 2nd or 3rd and short where we ran the ball. We got the first down on 3 of those attempts.

Other than not getting rushing yards on 3 short plays (which we agree may be more of a factor with the formation), I'm not sure where the O-line would really need to improve. 250 yards rushing and zero sacks.

Again, Papi is a slot receiver. Save for rare exceptions, he is not a running back.

Running backs are running backs.

Yep, Papi in the slot makes sense. Why use a TE in the slot? Seemed like a stupid alignment when we used two TEs as wideouts so much. Neither TE has that much speed. We can't get 5 WRs out there more often?

Didn't look for or notice this, but are our TE's still rather slow?

Sad that a casual fan can point out...continue to point out...basic flaws in our scheme/strategy such as 71 points out above.

One of my biggest pet peeves with this program is not having any plays with the Q.B. under center.

You've got a 3rd or 4th and one with a big O line and your R.B, or Q.B. has to run 3-4 yards just to get to the line of scrimmage.

The announcers for the game also mentioned this several times.

How hard is it to put some under center plays in the playbook ?

I tend to agree with this; however, I've noticed some other teams (highly ranked ones) that do the same thing -- shotgun in 4th and inches. Personally, it still doesn't make sense to me. But, unlike, some on this board, I realize that I'm not a coach and don't play one on TV or the interwebs. [Apologies to oldkatz for using his copyrighted term.]

Casper71. I get that Ohio tries to be balanced play calling with the desire to establish the run first. The double TE would be needed to establish the run. The TE in the slot would be there to set the corner, handle an ILB/OLB or safety. Papi in the slot would have a tough time setting the corner. Papi is a wild card. RB sometimes, slot or WR. Just making him the slot receiver really limits him as a threat as well as weakening the running game. Beyond that, all this will change, week to week, depending upon the opponent. So far Monroe has established that Papi should not be a RB. You are establishing that the TEs should not line up in the slot. More to follow, I am sure. One thing for Monroe, Ouellette's 40 yard run, 2 back set, one TE, Irons does a nice job as a lead blocker, rolling a LB. The more they see of Irons doing that the less we will see of the TE in the slot. Had that been Papi at RB it would have been a TD not 40 yards.

BCAT, I get what you are saying but as I recall these were like third and big yardage plays. I don't think we ran on any of these plays. If you are going to pass the ball, I still say get 5 wide outs in the game with speed not two slower tight ends.

I have the tape. I am willing to look. Give me a little more of your recollection. Or since you are making these blanket statements, how about you research this and come back with more than "as I recall." I am most interested in how many plays are involved. Third and long, TE in the slot, Papi not split out. Remember, Cope was not available, Smith on limited duty.

Bcat2--stop making every excuse possible. THe CBS 'nouncers said during the game something like none of TX States receivers had ever caught a ball in a game or caught one from their qb on Saturday in a game.

TX State, though, seemed to get by despite the descriptions posted here by their fans about how young and inexperienced they are.

So youth at receiver is an excuse for us even though TX State overcame the same thing?

At some point--sit down as this will shock you--at some point, this coaching staff needs to be held accountable.

By the way, and I'm entirely making this up and there's not a trace of truth to it, TX State fans are complaining about the weak teams on their schedule to start their season.

TX State's next 3 opponents (and this is true) Arkansas, Houston, Incarnate Word.

Monroe, stay focused, please. The discussion is about use of a TE in the slot.

which you stated could be due to lack of front line wideouts--which was not a barrier to TX State throwing for 19 thousand yards on us.
