Scarborough has stepped down. Akron's website claims it was a mutual decision between the trustees and Scarborough. http://www.ohio.com/news/local/update-ua-president-scott-...

They say he can teach or get a $450,000.00 buy out.

Is $450,00.00 enough to by him an acre of land, in Akron ?

Two days later, Akron board of trustees has removed "Ohio's Polytechnic University" from all references.

Feel the love.

Today's Akron Beacon Journal includes a front-page story on Stark State College's plan to build a branch campus right across the street from UA. Some UA profs are concerned that the branch will worsen UA enrollment - with the 2016 frosh class expected to be 23% below 2015's which was down from 2014 and 2013.

I thought you were kidding until I looked it up. Stark State!!! If they had a marketing department I would fire all of them for coming up with that name.

It just keeps getting better in Zippyland. The ousted prez has exercised his option to become a full-time faculty member for the next five years...at nearly $300K per. His new title? "Professor of Practice." Priceless.

The future of that institution is grim.

http://www.ohio.com/news/education/ua-bracing-for-20-mill...

A merger with Kent State, as shocking as it sounds, seems like a reasonable conclusion to the mess in a matter of not too many years. Would give Kent State a law school, strong polymer program and essentially a downtown campus while eliminating administrative bloat, the cost of running two of everything (including athletics) and other benefits. Sounds insane, but Akron seems like it's in a death spiral.

I hope they come through it, because a loss of the school as a standalone institution would be devastating to a city and region that don't need more kicks in the balls.

I'm wondering how many mergers there have been lately for schools of this size. Any ideas?

In my opinion anything that would in any way slow down the spiraling cast of higher education in this country is a step in the right direction.

Most mergers in this list appear growth related. The nation and population have been growing, so I don't know if there's a precedent for two massive schools merging.

In a related note, I think BG and Toledo would be a prime candidate for such a merger as well. Both are shrinking and geographically close, though neither one is in the dire situation that Akron is in. I think if one happens successfully, it could make another one more likely.

Governor Rhodes proposed such a merger way back when. It probably should have happened at that time. As I recall the proposed new name was Northeastern Ohio University. That, of course, was when it was merger of two schools on even terms. Now, I think, it would more likely be KSU swallowing up what's left of UA. I personally think that this is not a bad idea as it would immediately reduce overhead by eliminating duplication in administrative positions as well as some duplicative faculty position. And, in athletics, the cost would be cut drastically, because you'd be fielding just one football team and one basketball team. You might actually be able with those saving to field a few additional teams in the non-revenue sports. All and all, it seems like a win-win to me, but I suspect the UA alumni base would fight such a proposal tooth and nail. Is that true, SBH?

On a personal note, I had some experience last year dealing with KSU-Ashtabula in the placing of an historical marker at the boyhood home of Albion Tourgée in Kingsville. I found everyone very cooperative and the when we had to get permission from the main campus for a KSU logo on the marker we had a real minimum of red tape to go through. I was actually quite impressed. It seems to me from my limited experience that KSU is run by some quality folks. In case you don't know who Albion Tourgée was, and are interested in such historical matters, you can take a look at his Wikipedia page: http://tinyurl.com/zlloxkr This includes a small photo of the historical marker, for which yours truly wrote the copy.

Thanks for the list. Very interesting stuff. It would seem
that perhaps the Indiana university- Purdue university- Indianapolis may be a close match except smaller. State schools very close and over 20,000 students.

Kent would be assuming debt and $230 million or so of endowment versus $110 million or so for them.

The resultant merger would be a very large school enrollment wise. And lots of alums to fight it.
Not likely in my opinion, but who knows.

"Rex Ramsier and the Tiger Team" would have made a great 1980s Saturday morning cartoon series.
