New Level of absurdity

Coach Harbaugh is planning on holding a week of spring practice during Michigan's spring break at the IMG Sports Academy in Florida. Just another example of the pushing the envelope farther into something that college sports should not be about.

If I was an SEC coach and was asked about this I would respond as follows: "Recruits should pay attention to this. Because it appears being in Michigan sucks so bad that even their head coach doesn't want to be there."

Had Urban proposed this idea, Billy would be all about it.

I'm sure all the big boys will be doing this in a couple years.

To any recruit Michigan is courting from the South-make sure you know what AA is like in say November through March. That's part of the experience. Hope you like cold and snow.

This ain't the old NBA with draft rights assigned geographically.

The cost of this would have to be close to that of attending a Bowl game moving your entire operation south, housing and feeding the entire staff. I don't care who does this, it's too much. At this level these kids recieve zero time off when you take away their spring break.

I think BTC is talking about time-off period, regardless of it being Spring Break or any other break. I tend to agree with that. These athletes get VERY little time off. At a glance, this seems a bit over-the-top.

It's not going to help his team one bit. It's a publicity stunt, pure and simple. Harbaugh eats this shit up, and I'm disgusted with myself for feeding it by commenting here.

I'm with BTC on this one.

I would not be surprised to see an NCAA rule in the future prohibiting the practice. Harbaugh likes to press the envelope. If it's not prohibited, you'll see more schools do, and not just the P5. I could see a school like Marshall or Temple having spring practice in Bermuda. A new level of absurdity, that's for sure! ;-(

I completely agree it is another step in dividing the haves and have nots. That is my objection. The cost of such an effort can only be achieved by a few. The players are going to love it. Yes love it. They will spend a few hours in shorts and helmets and then hit the beach. The majority of the players can not afford such a trip. So this is a very nice perk. But one that should not be allowed.

I just came from a meeting in Laurinburg, NC. There are 5 kids from the HS playing major college football (Clemson, NC State, UNC, Ga Tech). NONE of them could ever afford to go away for Spring Break - even if Spring Break was in Wilmington, NC. They/Their families simply have no money. Some of these kids truly come from nothing.

The real absurdity is the fake outrage under the guise of "what is best for the student-athlete".......The jealousy/envy and wannabee mentality of non-Michigan fans, opposing schools and opposing coaching staffs is well beyond absurd at this point.......Ask any one of the UM football players that went on this practice-vacation if they were denied "their time off" or would have rather not gone.....I can guarantee you, not a single kid would side with you on your take......The real issue here and based on the recent statements by guys like Mark Dantonio and Urban Meyer, is simply....Why didn't I think of this brilliant idea first????"

Alan, Alan, Alan.....The argument is that if you have the money to send teams around like this, then these supposed student athletes are actually closer to professional Athletes and should be able to earn money accordingly. Have you ever had a conversation with a student athlete that comes from a low income background? It is pretty sobering to hear some of their stories and think about how much money they bring to the school, yet they are paid the same as Scholarship Volleyball Player? Golfer? Swimmer?

Many on this board are worried about things like this making it harder for the Bobcats to compete, which is an obnoxiously selfish idea. The NCAA needs to make sure that the system is fair for their student athletes first. If it is truly about being a Student Athlete, then make it that way. Don't play games on weekdays, limit practice for study time, reward coaches for good academic teams. If you don't want those things, then you are saying the students are there to play sports, which in case they should be able to earn money from their own name(Notice, I don't even argue they need to be paid). Look at it this way...

Volleyball Player brings X amount of money to the school. This is most likely less than the scholarship they get.

DJ Cooper brings X amount of money to the school. That number is easily 100 times the value of his scholarship.

Explain to me how that makes sense?

My guess is that this won't pass the "smell test" for the NCAA's relevant committees, and it will be legislated against at next meeting of said organization. It really does look like something you'd expect from a professional team, like in MLB spring practice.

Billy, explain to me how this makes it harder for us? We aren't recruiting the same type of player that OSU and Michigan are. They are worlds ahead of us. Look at their facilities, budgets, equipment, etc. Why should they hold back from doing it? Just because OU can't afford it?

What is wrecking College Athletics? I assume you mean the "amateurisim". I'm sure you like being able to watch all the games on different channels. That takes money, so you can't have it both ways.
