This is likely the best hire Illinois football has made in a long time. He has name recognition in Illinois and elsewhere, and was a winner with the Bears (81-63, three division titles and an NFC championship in nine years). And he's at an age (57) where moving on might not be an option should he turn Illinois into a Big Tenfinity power. This could be Illinois's equivalent of hiring Frank Solich. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/bigten/2016/03... /

I like this hire for Illinois.

I've seen crazier things happen.

It was definitely odd how it was handled, though. I note that the new AD did not fire Groce, or at least not yet...

Oh, now you've done it...

Thank you, DFC. I presume that you'll continue on to show how this is either or both of an inappropriate comparison or a bad move.

However, I'll start: WHY IN THE NAME OF ALL THINGS DALEY WOULD ILLINI HIRE A COACH WITH THE INTENT THAT HE NOT WIN A CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP FOR AT LEAST 11 YEARS?

I often think the best career move one can ever make as a coach is to get fired from an NFL coaching position as quickly as possible and cash in at the college level.

That failed experience is like a license to print money.

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on how he builds the program. I caught some of his press conference flipping channels the other day on the Big Ten Network and he made a good impression on me-has lofty goals but also realistic. An interesting tidbit shared by one of the reporters: Illinois has only two winning seasons within the B14 over I think the past 20 seasons. But they went to the Sugar and Rose Bowls each of those years so they made them count.

He could have the Illini in the mix in the B14 West in a couple years. Definitely not the meat grinder that the East is. Can hopefully keep and attract Chicagoland talent to C-U.

I've always thought that Illinois is the sleeping giant of the Big Ten. They have the location, and should have the facilities and resources to become an all-sport powerhouse in the conference along the lines of a Michigan, Michigan State, or Ohio State. It's always been a matter of having administrative support and having someone formulate and implement a plan for success.

I would have to imagine most of the Big 10 football coaches are the highest paid public employees in their respective states.

In 40 of the 50 states the highest paid state employee is a College Coach, of either football or basketball.

Of note, until the hiring of Lovie, Coach Groce was the highest paid employee in Illinois

Their W-2's might indicate the highest, but I wouldn't be surprised if others bring home more in the form of graft.

Some people think that some day you'll go beyond blather, some day you'll counter content in posts with something approaching intellectual rigor.

We can all disabuse anyone of such notion.

It's the right thing to do.
