I've been reading about the new Major League Football starting soon and one of the options is Akron. They may have found a way to help finance that new stadium. LOL

30 second play clock
4 points for 50 yard+ field goals
All teams owned by league, no local ownership
April-July season
2000 players under contract and subject to draft

Interesting. I've long believed the NFL was ripe for some "competition."

I think there are smaller cities that could easily support professional football with as football-crazed as this country is.

I like the quick play-clock idea... Additionally, I hope that means no TV time outs... NBA-like pro football.

I've seen crazier things happen.

I'm just curious, but what do you mean, that it won't "work"? Not a lot of field goals over fifty yards are attempted, so I don't think it would have that much impact, though it might lead to some new strategies in close games.

That question aside, the idea of an off-season league seems like an idea that has been tried before, and which didn't work before.

I don't think it will work either. This has been tried repeatedly, it seems like once every decade or so, maybe a little longer. I personally love the idea as I loved the USFL and even NFL Europe (XFL was a joke), but I was one of the few. Spring/ Summer professional has never had any mass appeal apparently. Too bad.

Anyone seen the 30 for 30 on the USFL? I personally liked the league, but when they brought theDonald in, didn't take him long to screw that up. And is Steve Young still being paid, or did that end a few years ago?

For what it's worth, Antwan Crutcher got drafted by one of the teams. Congrats to him!

If it gets off the ground, then while it lasts it will provide a cleaner path to the NFL than arena football. I rather doubt that it lasts more than one or two seasons, though.

Good luck to Crutch!

Major funding fell through recently. Sounds like the league has some other options but it sounds like it will be difficult to start the league.

Also, don't forget the United League (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Football_League_(200... )

Teams deliberately losing yardage in certain situations in order to go for a 4 pt fg. Maybe the rule should be 4 pt fgs when they are closer than 40.

How does that differ from driving the ball inside in basketball, then passing the ball outside for a longer, lower-percentage shot in the hopes of more points? While I concede that it could/will happen that in certain circumstances teams might deliberately lose yardages so as to be able to attempt a longer kick, I don't necessarily see it as a problem.

The idea may be seen as a gimmick and die, or it, and the strategies related to it, may become accepted. There is nothing inherently unreasonable about more points from further out because they are certainly more difficult. Most kickers today are very accurate under 40 yards, but many are significantly less accurate over 40. Yaz, for example, made 88% of his field goals from under 40, but only 52% from over 40.

You mean like teams today taking a penalty to punt from further out to not kick into the end zone. Happens all the time

They'd probably draw better than Zippy.
