As Tim Burke noted elsewhere, Montgomery is an interesting city. Here are a few items of interest. National Civil Rights Memorial designed by Athens' own Maya Lin is open for visitors 24/7. F.Scott & Zelda Fitzgerald Museum and Hank Williams Museum are downtown. Former Ohio women's hoops coach Semeka Randall's Alabama State Hornets have a home game at 6 p.m. on Thursday. There is an Alabama football legends luncheon on Thursday honoring Pat Dye - he'll be there, but I don't know about Bo Jackson. There's a team activity/pep rally aligned with a downtown holiday parade on Friday.

What's the payout for this bowl? According to Wikipedia (I know), this bowl has the lowest payout of all, but might be dated information. If that's true, how does the MAC let that happen, with a team like Akron getting a better slot?

I bet the Appy State coaches are as confused by Ohio as we are. Trying to figure out if we're any good based on the BG tape and then scared of us watching the NIU film.

With smaller payouts usually comes smaller ticket guarantees, which could mean there is actually the potential to lose less money.

From an article in USAT (http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2015/12/04/con... /):
"A conference puts the money it collects from bowls into a pool and draws from it to give each participating school a pre-determined amount to cover transportation, lodging, meals and entertainment. Cost overruns are covered by the schools, though conferences sometimes reimburse those that must overspend because of unforeseen circumstances. Any money left over in the pool is distributed to all schools in the league."

I think the MAC does it this way. I know, it smacks of socialism, but it's one way of dealing with the inequalities of the bowl system. From an attendance/viewing angle, we're probably getting a better deal. We're playing at 5:30 on a Saturday afternoon vs a 10-2 team while Akron gets 3:30 on the Monday before Christmas vs a 6-6 team. In a warmer locale, too, that may be easier to get to.

And if you really want to hear some bitching, the MWC commish is none too happy about two of his teams meeting in the Arizona Bowl: http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2015/12/06/mou... /

Not to mention Saturday afternoon is a much better travel alternative for a game rather than a weeknight.

Some things to ponder:

App St got three points in this week's Coaches Poll; they received votes in each of the last six weeks.

Sagarin has App St 61st with a 70.93 rating; Ohio is 93rd with 62.58.

CBS ranks App St 33rd; Ohio is 58th.

Vegas opens with App State a 9 point favorite, which is less than I expected. I think it will be a close, hard fought game that could go either way. Ohio will be healthier than they have been all season, but App State is also one of the better teams Ohio has faced all season.

#13 is a Pretty darn good Bowl Ranking from Yahoo Sports. 1-40

13. Raycom Media Camellia Bowl (Dec. 19, Montgomery, Alabama) – Appalachian State (10-2) vs. Ohio (8-4)

Ohio and Appalachian State may not be the sexiest names in the bowl slate, but this one has some potential. The Mountaineers boast the best offense in the Sun Belt while the Bobcats are riding a three-game winning streak. This is the first bowl appearance for App State since its move over from the FCS level, so you know they’ll have some extra juice to come out with a win.

Jerry Palm at CBS has Camellia ranked 27th:

Camellia Bowl: December 19, 5:30 p.m.

Ohio (8-4) vs. Appalachian State (10-2): If you haven't taken the time to watch Appalachian State this year, give the Mountaineers a shot. They're fun. Not sure how fun this game will be, but App State's cool.

Outside of the top bowls (Rose, Sugar, Cotton, Fiesta, Orange), the only bowls that feature teams with good overall records are the Peach, Russell, and Alamo. Ten of the forty bowls feature teams with a combined record of 13-11 or worse (i.e. a 7-5 versus a 6-6). I can't believe those games are going to generate a whole lot of interest outside of the fans of those specific teams. All ten of those should go right to the bottom of the fan interest list.

One thing that the Camellia Bowl does have is two teams with good records, and the same is true of the Boca Raton Bowl and the goDaddy bowl. Therefore you'd think that when ranking bowl games, none of those three are going to find themselves in the bottom ten for anyone, so somewhere in the 13-27 range sounds about right.

Anyone have an update on the overall injury situation? Players who may be back? It's nice we have some time to heal and hopefully get some more guys back.

I think it interesting that the MAC Conference Champion is playing a Sunbelt Team with a worse record than Appalachian State, in Georgia Southern.

The Sun Belt champ always goes to New Orleans. This year it was Ark St (8-0, 9-3). The powers that be probably wanted Ga Southern to go to Mobile because it's closer and probably has more alumni nearby.

Why would Raycom Media sponsor a bowl that does not air on Raycom Media?

From the Raycom website:

Raycom owns over-the-air syndication, regional cable, and digital media rights to Atlantic Coast Conference Athletics.

This is a non-conference schedule match-up that I think would be great to see on the calendar. Going to Boone in late September would be a fun road trip!

Raycom is based in Montgomery, so they wanted to do something for their hometown. Unfortunately, the stadiums in Montgomery seat just in the 25,000 range and you probably can't get an ACC team to play a bowl game in a stadium that size, even though they'll draw fewer than that in some of the other bowl games they play in. Last year's Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit between Rutgers and UNC drew only 23,876 which was a smaller crowd than all but one Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl.

So what free gifts does this bowl offer players? Remote controls?
