I just took a post-season look at Phil Steele's pre-season power rankings. He had Ohio 80th.

Ohio's opponents? Prescient? Take a look at where he had App State.

39 - Minnesota
45 - Marshall
68 - Northern Illinois
71 - Western Michigan
75 - Bowling Green
79 - Akron
80 - Appalachian State
81 - OHIO
88 - Ball State
104- Kent State
118- Buffalo
119- Idaho
126- Miami

App State did not beat anybody but us. We made them into Goliath, that ranking is accurate. Minnesota at 39 is a joke.

Interesting open letter to the App State fans from their AD:

Dear App Nation,

As we continue to bask in the glow of the historic football season that we all enjoyed thanks to head coach Scott Satterfield, his staff and, most importantly, a very special group of student-athletes, I want to take a moment to thank YOU for your support, particularly last weekend at the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl.

It was amazing to see the Black and Gold take over Montgomery. Thanks to 7,000 Appalachian faithful in attendance, the Cramton Bowl felt like Kidd Brewer Stadium. Our student-athletes fed off of the energy you provided and it was undoubtedly a factor in our thrilling victory. Just as importantly, by buying tickets and traveling in droves to Montgomery, you proved to the nation (and bowl executives) what we already knew — Appalachian State fans are among the best in college football!

On behalf of our coaches and student-athletes, I thank you very much for your support in 2015. Even bigger things are on tap for 2016, particularly with regards to our home football schedule, which includes a visit from five-time national champion Miami on Sept. 17. Season ticket information will be available in early January.

In the meantime, Happy Holidays and Go Mountaineers!

Very sincerely,

Doug Gillin

BG played their worst game of the season. We did not play so well and almost beat them. They are a bottom 50 team with a cupcake schedule.

People get so fussy over cupcake schedules... Including our own...

End of the day. App beat us in the bowl game. Anybody going to look back a couple years from now at that schedule? Nope. We didn't win a bowl game. They beat us. Just win baby.

I've seen crazier things happen.

BGSU was out gunned, plain and simple. Their defense was poor all season, and they had no answer to Georgia Southern and their DL did not know how to play against that blocking scheme. Coaching change was not an excuse as Georgia Southern was in the same situation.

BG's qb was fumbling for no reason, Roger Lewis was dropping passes. Please lets stop with the fake moral victories. App St was garbage and we lost. This is disgusting how we elevate every team that beats us. Please stop. BG lost their coach, the qb was off and the nations leading receiver dropped two touch downs and yes BG had no D all year, but stopped us and smashed us.

Remember Minnesota was supposed to win the Big Ten West after they beat us or sorry we beat ourselves.

The somewhat questionable (total B.S. is more like it) delay of game call at the end of the game did have something to do with the loss.

I don't know why you have such a negative impression of App State. Before the game I predicted they would be about a 12 point favorite, if I recall, based on how they had played all season. I was surprised, and Vegas opened App State as only a 9 1/2 point favorite. That's still a substantial margin, and it would have been a definite upset if Ohio had won. Nevertheless, Ohio was getting a lot of players healthy, so the point spread closed to only 7 by game time, and I thought Ohio had a chance to win, and I think that Ohio played well in the game, though the first quarter was a little rough as the team got it's timing back after a month off.

Turning your statement around, please, lets stop with these fake moral losses. For some people it seems to be important to run down any team that Ohio beats, and say that they are garbage, and thus the win was meaningless, such as Akron and NIU. Then, they also run down any team that beats Ohio, again with the apparent purpose of making the Ohio players look worse.

Instead let's be honest, and look objectively at the teams. App State finished 11-2. Even if they play in the Sunbelt, they are a good team. While you feel that they sucked, the national consensus, as reflected by the point spread, is that they did not.

The Ohio players worked hard, and played well this season, most of the time. They did have a 1 1/2 games in the middle where, to me, they did not play well (2d half of WMU and Buffalo), and they certainly did not achieve all their (or our) goals. Let's let them keep the accomplishments that they did achieve, without feeling a need to take those away, too.

As for the subject of this thread, Steele being prescient, his track record shows that he is clearly the most accurate forecaster out there, year in, and year out.

How is any 11-2 team "garbage"?

Not to mention the Sun Belt was a solid conference this year at the top. Arkansas State, Georgia Southern and Appalachian State were the torch bearers but there were some other good wins for Georgia State and South Alabama. And this was in a year where ULM and ULL were awful.

FWIW, I'm super glad Ohio didn't play Georgia Southern in a bowl. No way, no how did I want the Bobcats going up against that gauntlet.

You guys know in your hearts that you have a defeated mind-state. This mind-state is not allowing you to think rationally. App State beat nobody, they barely beat us and we played horrible. The only reason why you guys are posting messages from their AD is because in your mind if you can lift them, you can somehow lift us, because you don't believe we can do it the old fashion way. This is why we come up with stupid polls like, would you rater have a MAC championship or a bowl win? Some of the most defeated mind-state will say a bowl win over a team like App State that is ranked number 80. We have to overcome our weakness. We did not want to play Georgia Southern, they are so tough, if you believe this you need to sign up for a martial arts class. Go Cats

Actually, I think you are the one with a defeated mind-state. You seem to expect the worst, and no matter what the Bobcats do, it's never enough. That's the very definition of a defeated mind-state. My mind-state is different. I try to be realistic about what they do accomplish, and hope for more. That's the exact opposite of a defeated mind-state.

The Bobcats this year were about what I expected, and not as good as I hoped. I expected them to end the regular season 8-4, and not play in the championship game, but hoped BG would implode, and the Bobcats would sneak in. Next year I expect them to build on their accomplishments this year, and to be in the Championship game again. In order to build on this year's accomplishments, of course, they had to have some accomplishments, and I think they did. Some, with a defeated mind-state would like to take those accomplishments away, or diminish them, leaving them nothing to build on.

I expect the best, that is why I am not celebrating a loss to App State. Challenge yourself and overcome that defeated mind-state and don't attack me for bringing the truth to the forefront.

No one is celebrating a loss to App State. What many are acknowledging is that we lost to a good team - nothing less and nothing more. For what's it worth, Sagrin has App State at 60 and us at 94.

I think L.C. is expecting "the best", too. Its a question of expectations. L.C. expected an 8-4 season. Me? I predicted 10-2 because I was drunk on Cubbie Cool-ade and was hoping for more than one miracle. For me, the secret of life is appreciating what life has to offer. My post is to clarify that our differences of opinion are deeply rooted in our the definition of our expectations.

I thought App State should have received bcs bowl consideration, they beat that juggernaut Georgia Southern, only three other top five teams can say they did that this year.

I think allen & Monroe are identical twins. Same mindset. Same complaints. Same repetitive drivel for weeks (months) on end.

The statement that App St was "garbage" greatly shows his knowledge (or lack thereof) re: college football.
