Message Not Read  Question for App State Fans
   Posted: 12/13/2015 7:08:08 PM
I figure the Appalachian State fans are the most credible on a question that many have questioned on here. The Bowl Season Blues thread just makes it even more appropriate. It's hard to imagine a better season in Appalachian State's future than 10-2 in FBS. It's a remarkable record. They lost to the number one team in the entire country (Clemson) and lost at home to Arkansas State, who was pretty impressive this year.

So, knowing that this season was near the pinnacle of expectations, and the reward is the Camellia Bowl against OHIO, was the jump to FBS worth it? Is this season more exciting than a run in FCS where the playoffs would be starting and you would have the chance at the National Championship? I've always resisted the thought of OHIO dropping to FCS, but I wonder if it would make for a more fun season. What do the App State fans think? If you knew then what you know now, would you want to move up a level?

Just so you know, they have made it known several times that they find the name "Appy State" to be highly offensive.

I am extremely pleased with the move to FBS, going 10-2 and to a bowl game in our first full year of bowl eligibility. I honestly thought it would take several years to, at least, have a winning season. FCS playoffs were fun but we've since moved on, and I for one, haven't wished for a second we were back there.

As far as the "Appy State" term goes, it's a derogatory term originating with Marshall fans in our old rivalry days. It just sounds childish.

It's like someone named Steve being called Stevie, or Ben=Benny

For some reason, with few exceptions, it does tend to grate our nerves. I guess it just sounds like a little kid.

Thanks for mentioning the correction in a manner that was respectful to us from App State.

It was fun while it lasted and I enjoyed getting to some of the playoff games.

I was watching a few minutes of NDSU-UNI yesterday and it was a bit sad to not be a part of that, but the reality is that even the Camellia Bowl will get more viewers and exposure than App State got in the playoffs.

There are some that hate how the SoCon was forced into I-AA back in 1981 along with the Southland Conference, and was it the OVC? App had a few years at I-A ball and was a few plays away from a possible Peach Bowl bid in 1974. No one knows where we would be now had that forced move to I-AA not happened. We would not have the championships and the Michigan game meaning so much. My dad and I shared some fun times from 2005 to 2007 before he passed away in 2008. Personally I would not trade those memories for anything, though that is a bit selfish of me on the one hand.

With all of that said, it was time to move on. Attendance was good, academics were and are good. We are a good sized school enrollment wise. Indicators told us to make the move. Glad we did.

Actually, because of the time of the game, I expect that the Camellia Bowl will have very good ratings. It could be one of the better watched "minor" bowls.

Thanks for the correction. I dislike when we refer to schools with a derogatory or disparaging nickname (though I think the many names that can be thought of for Akron, in light of their desired name-change, are all fair game). It was not meant disparagingly, and appreciate being informed.

Exceptions to this rule are hereby granted for the schools in Oxford and Cowtown.

Well ... the playoffs were a blast (if you were in them). And, the 3 Nat'l Titles came when my sons were 10 & 12, through when they were 12 & 14. The Michigan game was something special, BUT, those 3 Nat'l Titles were more fun (IMO). Some of the semi & quarter final games were incredible.

But, thing is, App out grew the Southern Conf. (aka the SoCon), to the point where it was not unusual to hear message board posters refer to it as the Small Con. There were a bunch of small, privates, like Furman, Samford, Elon, etc. and then there was App. & Georgia So. And, Western Carolina was just helpless & hapless for many years. So, I was getting tired of being the big fish in the small pond.

So, is the Camellia Bowl worth it? I have no idea. I'll tell you afterwards. But, I expect that it will be. Further, sooner or later the FBS playoffs will be opened up. That could provide satisfaction as well.

I hope to meet some Ohio fans. Should be fun. Yall come!

It was worth it 100%! In my mind we keep winning and eventually we will make it to the big time! We just have to stay relevant and win. Same could be said for Ohio. Just win baby, win!

I think we can relate. We just recently converted from being called Ohio U. to just being called Ohio.

Although, entire generations grew up with the Ohio U. moniker, it now seems a little bit dated since really no other major universities have just that one letter at the end to refer to them.

P.S. I'm not surprised the Marshall fans started a derogatory term.

I would not say we just recently distanced ourselves from the "Ohio U" moniker. That term really dates to no earlier than the 1930s, when it was used to distinguish ourselves from Ohio A&M (aka Ohio State U.) who had by that time effectively stolen the "Ohio" name. When I was an undergraduate in the 1960s, President Alden made a major push to ban the term "Ohio U" from our vocabulary. Our athletic teams since the 19th Century have worn jerseys either saying OHIO or OU. References to Ohio University as just "OHIO" in athletic contexts can be found as early as the late 1890s. Then, dear App fans, that school in Columbus sued us in the late 1990s over our use or our name on a new logo -- the AttackCat, which we still use. Make a long story short, once their attorneys told them they were going to lose the suit, the presidents of the two institutions reached an out-of-court settlement. Basically, the Evil Empire (Columbus Division) admitted that we were OHIO, but we gave them (stupidly in my opinion) permission to continue to use OHIO in some contexts, like their fight song, Script Ohio, etc. I you're truly interested I can post the whole darn agreement. So, yes, we at OHIO truly understand the sensitivities on can have about being called by your right name.

I am not supposed to mention this and for the record I am admitting nothing.

However suffice it to say I WILL do all I can to make the TV ratings as good as possible for the MAC and SB so both schools look as attractive as possible going forward as it relates to TV appearances. I'll leave it at that.

For the record the App message board has been very complimentary about the Bobcat fans. This above is nice to read and proof of the class the Bobcat fans seem to have. Very refreshing.

An honest thank you. We desperately want to avoid being confused with the aforementioned fans of Ohio A&M. At least the ones you are more likely to bump into during football season.
