Per the Game Notes ( http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/ohio/sports/m-footbl/... ) our all-time record now is 547-545-48. I was thinking we needed to win 10 games this season to break .500.

I wonder what it would be if we could subtract Cleve/Lichty/Knorr.

Perhaps Monroe can petition the NCAA to have their records expunged.

The Jeff Fishers of the Mid-American Conference has a nice ring to it.

Somewhere Bill Hess, Don Peden, Ralph O'Bleness, Charles O'Bleness, and Carroll Widdoes are smiling -- and many others as well.

It all depends what data source you use. If you use the data at stassen.com, Ohio is now exactly at .500. There is also a database at cfbdatawarehouse, but I'm not sure what it shows.

OK, L.C., if you want to go technical on us, we need to subtract at least one win over Nelsonville High that OHIO has in the record book. As you know I recently got access to newly scanned copies of The Athens Gazette and a story in that paper clearly revealed that one game with NHS was against the OHIO second team. It was not a varsity game and, therefore, should not count as a win. I don't have the info in front of me right now, but I think it was 1898.

Is it actually counted in the totals though?

Yes. There are several valid questions about the accuracy of old records. I don't recall them all, but there is one year where some accounts show that Ohio played Marietta twice and lost both, but only one shows on the Ohio record book. I believe there is also a game that Ohio claims to have won that UC also claims to have won.

I have no idea which records are correct, but if they are going to make a big deal out of being .500 all time they should try to resolve them. If they aren't, just forget it, and let these lie in the dust bin of the distant past.

Thank you all for low standards.

Question: If we hadn't been rather lousy over the last 40 or so games, most of which against weak competition, would we have to resort to a certain set or or records to be definitely over .500?

I believe the totals that OHIO cites include all games, not just games against collegiate opposition. I think that this is what most schools do, since there were many early games against YMCA teams, town clubs, etc. I believe I have seen some schools that eliminate these games from the totals, but I'm not sure that that is the norm.

YAY: A data discussion!!
[The bad news for you is that you got into a discussion about data quality with a scientist who has a slow day ;-) ]

That is not an answer. If you're going to say that wins over "X" need to be subtracted from the total, without actually verifying that wins over "X" are currently included in the total, it undercuts your entire argument and really distracts from the credibility of the point you're trying to make

What you really need to do is compare the athletic department win/loss-count with your win/loss-count (that excludes the games against Deaf & Blind, Nelsonville High, YMCA, etc.) to see if they are currently including games against non-collegiate opposition.

Of course in carrying out this activity, it would also be necessary to exclude LOSSES to non-collegiate competition (I don't know how many of those exist in the old microfiche either)

Well, you are, of course, right. One could do the kind of counting that you are talking about and add everything up and then compare that with what the university is reporting as official numbers. Then you could also just pick up that only 19th Century device called the telephone (landline, of course) and just ask the sports information folks in the AD's department what the heck is included in their totals! ;-)

Yes, those games see in the totals. Added them all up long ago and biggies that they are all in.

Monroe is complaining about the last 40 games again. How about that stretch of (just under) 40 YEARS between bowl games?

I realize most don't take Monroe seriously, but I really struggle to fathom the IQ level of the few who do.

I've seen crazier things happen.

I would have to be considered a candidate for Mensa if the amount of credibility one gives to Monroe is an indicator of one's IQ.

Well, the substance of the data is verified, but not the accuracy. OCF must still visit the microfilm archives to verify the accuracy, and in particular which games, if any, were actually JV games.

Fortunately, many of the newspaper microfilm collections have been (and are being) converted to the digital domain. The most recent of which is the Athens County Gazette: http://tinyurl.com/z4huru7 I'm not sure if this one had even been microfilmed before. So, now, one can do some of this research in his or her PJs without venturing out to the dusky archives of Alden Library.

Some specific games you can research (in addition to the ones you already have mentioned) are:
1. The game against UC in 1898, which may have been a 12-12 tie, or may have been a 12-0 win by UC.
2. Did Ohio play Marietta once in 1896, as Ohio's Media guide claims, or twice as the Marietta Media Guide claims?

Good to hear from DFC, bobcatsquared and the rest of the they're-talking-and-the-rest-of-us-are-getting-dumber crowd.

Is it more thrilling to you or illuminating of your vapid existences to the rest of us when I post and you get a chance to respond with the same old meaningless tripe.

Seriously, your lack of ability to think beyond the narrowest of frames is impressive.
