Here we go again, another MAC coach (Matt Campbell) heads to a power conference school (Iowa State.) If he can turn around the Cyclones, he will be nothing short of a miracle worker, limited football history and hardly a talent rich football state from which to recruit. In addition, he has big brother to deal with in the Iowa Hawkeyes. However, more importantly for us, once again a MAC school is headed to a bowl game with either a lame duck coach, or an interim coach. It is getting hard being the triple AAA affiliates to the power conferences.

I personally advocate for hiring seasoned coaches who may have been fired, or want to spend their final years close to home, yet still have the coaching fire in their belly. Coach Solich has been with us for 10 years. I wish we would go after a little more high profile high school talent, but at least we have had 10 steady years. I confess, I don't know all the answers to keep coaches, but the Bobcat approach seems to be the more sensible way.

Totally agree with your assessment. How do you compete in the Big 12 at Iowa State?
And how good is he? He inherited a strong program at UT and to his credit continued their success but he has an uphill battle ahead.
It seems like the Chris Kelleys and Urban Meyers of the world have a resume of turning around failing programs and leaving their mark. Those guys are the type that succeed when they leave the MAC.
Fleck is a "program builder" and is probably next.

I find it almost humorous that Cubit landed a Big 10 job before Fleck.

I believe it's all about the money 1st and the school 2nd.
Who would stay at Toledo for $800k when you could get $2.0M or more and with a 4-5 year guarantee? And to top it off Iowa has a low standard of living. You can easily sock away millions by the end of your 5 year deal.

GO BOBCATS

PS I wouldn't be surprised to see 1 or 2 more coaches moving on by Jan.

Babers and Fleck got to be on a lot of short lists.

While it's good that we don't have to worry about coaches moving on and replacing staff every year, it would be a little flattering to know that some of our coaches were up and comers and at least getting a few looks elsewhere.

I think you meant "cost" of living and as you can see, it costs more to live in Ames than in Toledo. To your point though, $2M would make that cost increase quite palatable.

Agree 100% on this, and he didn't even have to put boat oars on his windbreaker to do it or dance like a fool. Bill Cubit must be feeling Elite this morning.

Oars and dancing like a fool--I can see that perspective. I can also see how youngsters would admire the commitment and attitude.

We shall see about the commitment. Fleck does relate extremely well to young people. He did begin to adjust things. His 2014 1500 yard, 25 TD & MAC Offensive POY was asked to split carries. The two backs still produced 1500 yards, though TDs dropped to 17 for the pair with Franklin getting only 5 this year. WMU in 2014 led the MAC in Pass Def Eff, in 2015 they dropped to 9th. Still in November he is 2-2. Losing to BG & NIU, while beating Ball State and Toledo. I hope it is enough for Georgia or someone with bucks for a buyout to test his commitment. The guy can recruit big time and coach well enough.

I wonder what the effect will be on recruiting if more coaches leave the stronger MAC programs in the next few weeks. Will OHIO benefit?

Looks like Babers to UCF (or TOS to Bowling Green)
http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2015/11/29/98162...

Also WMU is reportedly at least attempting to load up a Brinks truck to keep Fleck. I question this report, honestly.

Thanks for all the latest updates everyone. Round and round the MAC coaching carousel goes, where she stops nobody knows! At least we know Coach Solich won't have an interim coach tag on him during our bowl game. The question is how many other MAC coaches will join him?

How is Babers getting such a promotion when Southern Miss' Todd Monken can't seem to get a sniff? All Monken did was take a winless Southern Miss team and within 3 years get them to win the CUSA West Division with a 9-3 record this year. Babers is OK but he was already taking over a very good BG squad under Dave Clawson when he took the job 2 years ago.

Babers situation seems similar to what Hazell did at Kent. Purdue just fired both coordinators.

Didn't Hazell inherit a solid nucleus from Martin (I think that was his name).

It makes sense only if they know he's gone. Bump the buyout up and try to pocket a little P5 cash. Maryland maybe? I could see Fleck pimping UnderArmor hard.

Good point. Yep it was Doug Martin that Hazell took over from. It was mainly Martin's players that Hazell coached during their 11 win season at Kent State a couple of years ago, a very similar situation to Stan Heath taking over for Gary Waters in hoops a decade earlier @ KSU.

Yes, Marin left Hazell a few good players, like Edelman, Roosevelt Nix, and Dri Archer, and Hazell got more out of them than Martin ever did.

I note that Monken is +11 on my Performance versus Recruiting rating, while Babers is +56. Without looking at the details, I'd guess that the coach at S. Mississippi had much higher ranked recruiting classes in recent years than BG, so more was expected from them. Also, the excitement factor is key, here. Fans like a lot of points, so Babers is going to be a fan favorite.

Babers denies UCF is a done deal but hasn't denied talking with UCF. And a win vs NIU Friday could land him somewhere better. http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/eye-on-college-f...

I believe that it would be more accurate to say that the State of Iowa has
"a low cost of living", rather than "a low standard of living."

Mr. Swank had addressed that above, but there may be some debate about how great their standard of living(quality of life?) is as well. Quoting "Cities Ranked and Rated", First Edition, by Sperling and Sander: "Ames has....a solid Midwestern feel, but some may not find enough to do in the area nor in Des Moines to the south." Sound familiar?

Actually, Ames was ranked number 12 of the 45 new Metropolitan Statistical Areas designated by the U. S. Office of Management and Budget in 2003.

Another report I saw later indicated that Babers has agreed to the terms, but wants to keep it quiet until after the MAC Championship on Friday. Forget where I saw it though.

The buyout is probably higher if he "accepts" a different job prior to the end of the season (excluding bowl games). So everything is agreed to, but he won't signed on the dotted line until about 11:45 p.m. Friday night.

I saw something (SB Nation?) that said his buyout is reduced by $100,000 at midnight tonight. I can't see him making anything official until after the MACCG Friday night.

Hopefully Babers takes his entire staff with him. Hopefully that opens things up in the East next year.
