ZERO first teamers, and only one second teamer for Ohio.

Poling only made 3rd team.

How does this even happen? How do we only get one Second Teamer? Poling was good enough to warrant Defensive Player of the Year! One of our linemen should be a First Teamer on offense. Sebastian Smith was one of the most dominant receivers in the conference but didn't have the stats. How about any of our DB's? Layton, Wells? How about Bonstetter? How about Basham or Laseak. Heard several commentators on TV during games talking about Laseak.

This shows that the MAC has a problem with our consistency. If you're not Northern, Toledo or BG then they don't care. How did Balls get so many high up guys? This is a travesty.

1. Kind of sad and disappointing that we only have one player on the 1st & 2nd team combined.

2. Total joke that Quinton Poling is 3rd team...he was defensive player of the week like 8 times this year wasn't he????

The joke with Poling on third team only gets worse when you consider that they put 2 inside linebackers on each team. Thus, they are saying he was the 5th or 6th best ILB in the conference, which is nonsense, with all the defensive player of the week awards he has had the last two years.

I'm sure he was held back by having missed parts or all of several games, but obviously, even with that considered, I don't see how he isn't at least second team.

So does this make Frank's coaching performance even better, given he has only one player at least second-team all-conference?

Or does this make Frank's recruiting seem sub-par, as other MAC schools appear to have more top-quality players at certain positions?

Which is even more impressive considering he lost time due to injury.

And the players ahead of him don't even rank that great, statistically:

Mays (NIU) - #12 LB in Tackles, not among top 5 LB in Sacks, not among top 9 LB in TFL. NIU ranks # 6 overall in the conference in yardage allowed.
Valdez (BG) - #3 LB in Tackles, not among top 5 LB in Sacks, not among top 9 LB in TFL. BG ranks #10 overall in the conference in yardage allowed.
Ibe (EMU) - #1 overall in Tackles, not among top 5 LB in Sacks, #6 LB in TFL. EMU ranks #13 overall in the conference in yardage allowed.
Santos-Knox (UMass) - #3 overall in Tackles, not among top 5 LB in Sacks, not among top 9 LB in TFL. UMass ranks #11 overall in the conference in yardage allowed.
Dellinger (Kent) - #15 LB in Tackles, not among top 5 LB in Sacks, not among top 9 LB in TFL. Kent ranks #3 overall in the conference in yardage allowed.
Poling (Ohio) - #25 LB in Tackles, #4 LB in Sacks, not among top 9 LB in TFL. Ohio ranks #4 overall in the conference in yardage allowed.

Tackles is a misleading statistic because a bad defense gives a good player more of an opportunity to make tackles, if the offense is getting more and more first downs. Sacks, TFL, and overall defense are better indicators, IMO, of an ILB's performance.

Throw in Poling's #10 overall rank in conference in Interceptions and #6 overall in Forced Fumbles (only Ibe from the list above ranks in either category, at #3 in forced fumbles)....and remember that he did all of that MISSING THREE GAMES!!!!!

Mays from NIU had 2 West Division DPOW awards. No one else at the position had multiple awards. Poling had it 3 times.

Total and complete joke.

EDIT: I'll add that I think Ibe ahead of Poling is justifiable based on the stats. But anyone else? Nope.

Stunter...B-I-N-G-O!

I think FS is a good coach and has a "system" thing going. But, to make it to the very top of the MAC, I think we need a more better players. the next time to see if these rankings are a joke or not will be the NFL draft/FA signings.

I think you really take a hit if you miss a bunch of time due to injury. That has to be why Poling is not higher up, even though he's better than most. Example, NIU's RB Bouagnon put up big yardage stats and TDs, playing every game. But I would put him 3rd-team at best, having watched him play, and just looking at ypc average as well.

I recall a similar thread where there was a list of all mac selections compared to wins over a period of time and the two lists matched up perfectly (most wins had most awards, least had least) with the glaring exception of Ohio that was near the top of list in wins and near the bottom of the list in individual awards. Anyone else remember that?

The thing is, the check is in the mail. It was "more better players" that turned 6-6 into 8-4 and just took down NIU. Seniors honored above were McQueen, Powell and Wells. Coming up are Lowery, Pruehs and Provitt. Two out of three will step in at the same level with potential to be better. Provitt, might just be the next Carrie or Wells. Next year's "more better players" are already on the roster. Can not wait to see Sayles, Basham, Laseak, Poling, Brown, Moore, Aloese, Porter, Smart, Provitt, Watson , McCray, Wood, Cope, Smith, Reid, Davis, Nelson, Howell, Hagen, McKnight, Crouch, Pleasants, Anderson, Belack, and Ball etc. all bigger, stronger and faster. A little faith is all that is required.

Recruiting is a big part of coaching. There is no GM in the college game.

When I was coaching high school volleyball for 9 years, we never worried about awards because they were so subjective and often political. All we carried about were league championships and how far we could advance in the state tournament.

Agree 100%. Our team should have a collective chip on their shoulder for all the individual snubs as they head to Detroit for the MAC Championship game.....er.....never mind.

Yes I remember that thread. I did the math for this year, and awarded 5 points for first team, 3 points for 2d team, and 1 point for third team. Here are the results:

NIU 47pts 6 conference wins
BG 38, 7
Toledo 34, 6

Kent 19, 2
CMU 18, 6
Ball St 18, 2

Ohio 7, 5
Maimi 4, 2
