For those of us who live in town and can get to campus in 10 minutes or less, we take it for granted. But watching on tv last night, I was pleasantly surprised at the size of the crowd on the home side. We do have a loyal following for football regardless of the record each year. Being a truly residential campus certainly helps that.

The number of fans was alright. The attention paid to the game is at an all-time low. You could have heard a mouse fart at the Ridges from that stadium last night.

The weather helped, perfect night for mid-November. The student crowd was really looking thin right before kickoff, some did fill in a little as the game got going. There were a lot of empty seats, which is a shame for the seniors.

Personally, I think they need to revisit mid-week games as compared to a Saturday, just to get on TV. Exposure can be great, but personally, I'd rather see bigger crowds. I have to think that making it very tough for non-locals to get to the game by having it mid-week hurts the attendance numbers.

I'm guessing the seniors who poured their heart and soul into this program for four years would have rathered played senior night/day in front of a packed Peden on a Saturday vs. a national TV game in front of 5000 on a Tuesday.

I'm sure that was well worth it to put Ohio-Kent and Ohio-Ball State on weeknight rather than making those Saturday games where Peden could've drawn 20k+

I'd be for that. The last home game could be something like a fan appreciation night. Or maybe even band night; at least the stands would look fuller and it might draw some parents from area schools to see their kids perform.

This has always been my biggest beef with the November mid-week games. Allow the Seniors to get some real love, PLEASE! I couldn't do it last night but in years past I have driven from Columbus just so I could be there for Senior introductions. The game became secondary. Very troubling thing to me to see these guys standing in front of a nearly empty grandstand as has been the case in a couple of these games.

If we are going to persist with this mid-week nonsense, let's have Senior Day on Opening Day. Hell, even Band Day got a prime spot on the schedule after being moved from the Marshall game. Let's let them come on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving next year.

Selling out the fans, no doubt. Selling out the student-athletes, I'm not so sure. You'd have to poll them and ask if they'd rather play in front of a full crowd on a Saturday, or play on National TV on a Tuesday. I honestly don't know the answer.

At least the 7:00pm start time helped those of us who came down from Columbus. We took days off for the weeknight games this year to come down early and start a new weeknight Court street "tailgating" tradition. After Monday Basketball and Tuesday Football, I am going to go to sleep early tonight.

If you really thought of players you'd understand that many of these kids have family who cannot make a game regardless of the day, and they get excited to be able to play in an environment that can be seen.

This is 2015. Every game can be seen...just maybe not on national TV.

There's no reason why some of these weeknight jokes can't be moved to Saturdays and be broadcasted somewhere else.

I agree with this. Last Saturday at Marshall it was nice to see a game in the sunshine -- at least through the third quarter. It was a 3:30 start so it was dark by the time the game ended. The sunshine though made the temperature in the stadium much more comfortable than what I endured last night in Athens. I know a number of less dedicated (aka stupid) fans in Athens who attend the early season games but head to their couches and ESPN for November games. These are more than casual fans. Many of them are season ticket holders, but they just will not come out for November night games on any kind of a regular basis. Perhaps, if we were playing for the East Championship they might. I do remember a decent crowd when we beat Akron for the championship several years ago. I think the MAC needs to reconsider this whole strategy. My wife says the MAC has sold its soul to the ESPN Devil. I'm not quite as vociferous as that, but I'm fed up with the arrangement. Getting rid of these games would be one advantage to moving to C-USA.

If a game isn't on one of the networks it has most certainly been on ESPN3. I agree just move it to Saturday. Those who can't attend will find a way to watch it for sure.

There's actually a really good legal reason: It's called a contract. Like it or not, the MAC is ESPN's bitch when it comes to a November schedule. It's not going to change any time soon.

I'm in this category. Contributing Factors for me for the weeknight ESPN games, and having only ever been to one:

-I live on the western half of Franklin County
-Kickoff time - usually 8pm. If I intend to be useful and functional at work the next day, AND stay for the whole game, this is just too late given that televised College football games last close to 4 hours.
-I like to tailgate a lot, night games aren't nearly as conducive to this. That's one of the reasons I like to come to games.
-Weather: While it was outstanding Tuesday, it usually isn't very pleasant.


In the years I've been a season ticket holder of basketball, I usually come to at least 2 weeknight games for basketball. My reason: I can get home and be in bed by 11ish, which for these ESPN games might be the beginning of the 4th quarter. Also of note - when the weather gets cold, I've only missed the weekend home games that fall over Thanksgiving because of family time.


Summary for me: Too late, too cold, too little tailgate time, not enough love for the game I guess.

I would like to see the number of mid-week games drastically reduced, but not eliminated entirely. Instead of having all the MAC play mid-week games, make it a showcase game. One big-game a week. I realize this is very tough logistically managing the entire schedule to give teams fair rest and also not perfect to guess who will be good in pre-season.. It certainly isn't the EASY route but I believe this is the BEST route.

As my profile pic shows, we CAN get the students to show for mid-week games under the right circumstances. When we pull it off, it makes for an incredible atmosphere. That game was one of the better atmospheres I've been apart of in Peden. That was a special set of circumstances, but I believe it could be replicated again. We have the benefit over the rest of the MAC over having almost no commuter students. Our students are almost always on campus, including during mid-week night games. Other MAC programs have the advantage over having the bulk of their non-student season ticket holder base closer by. We have season ticket holders in Athens, but I would assume compared to other MAC fanbases our season ticket holders are (on average) the furthest away from our campus. That will always hurt our mid-week attendance negatively, but if we were only doing this occasionally maybe once a year I think people like myself, who live too far to make the drive for a mid-week game when I have to work the day of and next day, might be more open to making the trip.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Did you object to these games as much then?

That is, if we were winning most of these games and they were all competitive (such that OHIO FOOTBALL showed well on the electronic transmission screens), would you object as much to the mid-week games?

We can't scale down the number of games because that's the whole point of ESPN buying them. They want a boatload of games to fill programming in the middle of the week. They don't want the "MAC Game of the Week" for a month. They want a bunch of games that pads the amount of live programming they can sell to advertisers (who are insanely overvaluing live programming right now -- a bubble of historic size waiting to burst any day now when we've reached the ever-nearing sports saturation point in our culture).

From my memory, a few years ago, when they were new, most fans grumbled, but were willing to give it a shot since being on TV was new. Now they are used to it being on TV, and being on ESPN3 all the time, so the TV is not as big a deal for them. I don't think winning or losing on TV is the issue. I just think that people don't like mid-week games, and never liked mid-week games, and as each year passes, the value of the tradeoff, being on TV, decreases.

In any case, I believe Ohio is 2-2 on TV so far this year, aren't they?
