It's only the second Q and already they've had NIU convert on a 3rd & 39 and Toledo's punter just picked up a first down when he ran a fake from his own end zone.

We will get by.

Tommylee Lewis and Drew Hare both leave the game due to injury.

do these announcers pay any attention who is playing the game they are covering. One of the announcers just said Ohio State hasn't played anyone all year even though one of the teams in the game has played them.

Got to hand it to NIU. Those guys know how to win, for sure against Toledo.
It's too bad in a way that Toledo couldn't make it to a big bowl. Such is life.

Still putting that crap up, are you?

Did you notice that NIU won despite...they didn't cave and lose by 30.

Are winning and cave-in loss by 30 the same in your book?

Toledo uniforms truly ugly.

Only saw a few minutes of the game, but Toledo's qb can put some juice on the ball when needed. Don't see that form Ohio.

Hahahaha.

Toledos QB throws for 136 yards on 45.5% completions, 1 TD and 2 picks in a LOSS.

He's the home QB on a nationally ranked team showing on national TV.

And you still go out of your way to knock Ohio.

Hahahaha.

Welcome to Ohio's world.

Ohio's world: Injuries lead to team folding up shop and losing by 30 and letting that ruin remainder of season

NIU's world: Injuries galvanize team...depth steps up...pull out HUGE road win....go on to compete for MAC West Division title

Not a lot of comparison.

Good programs overcome injuries....struggling ones let injuries derail them

Wait. what. This Toledo QB, the transfer from Alabama, 3 stars, offers from most of the SEC, you mean he does not walk on water? NIU's Hare & Graham, 4 stars & two total offers between them. Gotta love the MAC. More than this big time recruit/player bright lights crap. Hare, Graham, Crutch, Carpenter, etc. theirs are the best stories in CFB. Student athletes. I am proud to cheer for them. Some times they win, sometimes not. "In the deed the glory."

For situation...I'd trade places with Toledo or NIU right now. I think their personnel is better than ours and, let's face it, it really is where we thought we would be 10 years ago when FS&Co were hired.

Oh well, it's the MAC and things don't always work out according to Hoyle...

Wait, are we not supposed to want a Matt Campbell of our own when Frank Solich retires? Because I do.

And now we don't want three-star recruits? Because I bet Frank Solich does.

"No, top-rated quarterback from the state of Ohio. We don't want you. The bazooka arm and intelligence you showed to earn a four-star rating just aren't enough to make up for the gigantic chip you don't have on your shoulders."

No offense, but I think that NIU and Toledo had better personnel 10 years ago, and 20 years ago, etc. I think most people would agree that Ohio has closed the gap.

Toledo, yes. NIU was 3-8 in 1995. They were 1-10 in 1996. They were 0-11 in 1997. They were 2-9 in 1998.

NIU's Hare is out for the year. I know their backup came in and did well but this gives Ohio an edge at QB now in that game.

True. My apologies. NIU didn't really start playing decent ball until 1999, the third year under Novak.

Of all the MAC teams, though, NIU probably has the best geographic location. The other MAC teams are mostly in a tight cluster in Ohio-Michigan-Indiana, and compete for the same pool of recruits. While it's a good pool, that's an awfully high number of Division I schools in a small area. Meanwhile in the states of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and the upper Great Plains there are very few Division I schools to compete with.

Sometimes I wonder if Ohio shouldn't recruit those areas more strongly, and take less recruits from Ohio. The flip side, though, is that by taking as many Ohio recruits as they do, they build their local fanbase, I guess.

Yeah, and even when NIU was bad, it seemed like Novak knew where he was headed with that program.

Abandoning Ohio would look bad, but I agree it'd probably be more fruitful. There are just too many programs poking around the state for talent to ever really pull away a big fish.

It seems like Solich's contacts in the Midwest are so much better that he can find diamonds in the rough there.

I wouldn't recommend abandoning Ohio, but I'd like to see 4-5 a year from the upper midwest, a couple from Florida or Texas, and a couple from Pennsylvania, which also been good for the Bobcats, and maybe only 7-9 from Ohio. Using Rivals data, here are their recruits by year from Ohio, and other than 2014, the recruits aren't as concentrated from Ohio as I thought:
2003 - 3/13 (probably not the whole class)
2004 - 10/21
2005 - 12/28
2006 - 9/19
2007 - 10/23
2008 - 7/20
2009 - 5/21
2010 - 5/17
2011 - 11/24
2012 - 6/20
2013 - 9/22
2014 - 17/25
2015 - 12/24

I would say that the best recruiting classes have been 2008, 2009, 2014, and 2015. Two of those had a very low percentage from Ohio, and two had a much higher percentage.

The moment I typed abandoned, I knew I'd worded it too strongly. Yeah, just more focus on less crowded recruiting trails.

I love those who use 40 years ago/tradition as the reason we can't get over the hump. IMHO, that is bull. I'd say Duke, Stanford, and there are probably more. Especially in the MAC it takes a coach and players. I thought we bought in the coach. We just haven't gotten ENOUGH GOOD FOOTBALL PLAYERS ON THE FIELD AT THE SAME TIME. So, if you agree the issue is players why is it so hard to get them to Athens? Even with a top notch coach?
