There has been a lot of talk about Frank this and Frank that, but this was a very good team under Frank at the beginning of the year. We beat a good Marshall Team and beat the other teams we were supposed to. I think based upon that it is pretty clear this slide was due to injuries and not being able to adjust. Injuries are tough to put on a coach, but the adjustments can/should fall on his shoulders. This seems to be a pattern with Solich teams, not dealing with adversity well. I would venture to say that it might have something to do with his style. They seem to pick favorites and ride them out, and then other positions(QB) use some weird logic for rotating. It's almost like they spend too much time trying to send messages to guys...

I agree 100%.
At the beginning of the season they keep talking about the team's depth.
Injuries are part of any contact sport.
Its foolish to think that you're not going to loose people for either part or all of the season.
You have to be ready for that.
There's no question, when a key player goes down, there's going to be a drop off in the quality of the person who replaces him ,at least at first.
For the most part we just don't seem to have guys ready to "step up".

We also seem to get "deflated" when a key guy does go down.

Its disheartening to watch this, but it seems time to face the facts. It seems that there is not a lot of position-battles. Seems like once once they name the starter that guy keeps the job he gets injured or graduates". I can't recall the last time a player was benched. (except for all the RBs in favor of AJ - but, again, once he got the job he kept it all year).

Here is something else to research: when is the last time an Ohio football team made a comeback to win a game? It seems, more often than not, that once Ohio falls behind (by a couple of scores) they're out for the count. Perhaps that's just an over-reaction to the past 3 weeks - but can someone look that up?

At Fiami last November, we were down 21-0 and won 24-21 on Yaz's FG as time expired. This year we didn't even trail until the second half of the Minn game (17-14), retook the lead (21-17) and held it until the last few seconds. We also trailed 3-0 at Akron but then scored two TDs and held on. What has hurt the last three games is having so many key D players banged up and even out of the game. We haven't had a takeaway in this three-game stretch, so we haven't given the offense really good field position or had a momentum changer. There are rumors that Pouling may be healthy enough to play next week, and if he is that would help.

It was all an illusion, we were never as good as our record. We beat 4 really bad teams and beat Marshall when Birdsong was their QB. Marshall changed QB's after the Ohio game because Birdsong is really bad and now they keep winning with him on the bench. Every thread talks about our defense but everyone avoids talking about the offense because it doesn't fit into the "injuries" talking points. We don't have quality QB's we have average at best MAC QB's that would never beat quality teams. Vick hits that one open receiver for a TD and maybe we stay in the game at BG but he overthrows him by over 5 yards. That is the difference between beating really bad teams and having the ability to compete with BG and the West Division of the MAC.

/\ /\ Bingo. D1 football, like the NFL, is a QB driven game on offense. Either you have one who is effective, or you don't.

I'm tired of the injury excuse but if you're going to use it, you could use it for the offense especially if you think the QB is super important. Ohio's top two QBs have been dinged/out since about the time the losing slide began.

Marshall has not "taken off." Their Purdue win in game one was just as good as any of their wins since.

And Birdsong has been hurt, that's why he went out in the first place. He wasn't replaced by some phenomenal QB who transformed the Marshall offense. I don't know where that theory got started. Marshall's been winning mostly with defense (and vs. an easy schedule).

Ohio had a couple bad games (WMU and UB) and improved, but not enough, against BGSU. They need to keep going. Still and all, beating Marshall was a solid win.
