During the game the broadcasters always call attention to the same players. The announcers typically have no idea who Ian Wells is (our best DB and NFL prospect) or Blair Brown (our "Slapshot" Hansen Brother in residence and leading tackler). I mean they treat Ian like he's just some run-of-the-mill MAC cornerback! Gasp! I just ask our SID (or whomever provides Reghi with his crib sheet) to do a little updating so that the spotlight is positioned correctly. Thank you for your attention and enjoy your Monday! At that time I looked at 3 preseason all MAC teams Phil Steele, Athlon and another. Wells was not in the top 4 defenses for Phil Steele, was not listed at all on the one with just two deep and was 4th string all MAC on the other. How does that translate to playing in the NFL? Sorry...but these guys all have day jobs and do these WatchESPN games on the side. They do little prep work...basically thumb thru things. Most of the time they butcher names, etc. That is what you get when your games are on TV during weeknights and the internet during weekends. Just more proof of the low-budget, low-rent league the MAC has become. We should expect more...deserve more...but until the conference demands more and provides more....this is what we are. Frustrating....but the sad reality. Toledo is barely ever mentioned when the "experts" talk about the G5 schools like Memphis, Temple and Houston. The league needs to do a better job promoting their success (i.e. Toledo, Matt Johnson, etc) They just rely on ESPN's weeknight MACtion to take care of their exposure. This league hasn't really evolved in the last decade...it's just stood dormant and failed to capitalize off NIU success or Ohio basketball success during the Sweet 16 run. We still have a trash "TV" deal that has 90% of our games on the internet....while I'm able to watch games on ESPN/CBS Sports Network/FSN that involve AAC, CUSA and even Sun Belt and OVC teams. The MAC has fallen off the national radar. No worries. :) I'm basing my assessment on my own eyeballs and Arkley has also mentioned a few times that Wells will get a look in the NFL and that he's our best NFL prospect right now. http://bit.ly/1Rq5P2Y The reason he doesn't make preseason lists is that what he does is not really measured. We put him on a team's best WR and he shuts them down. Last week he did that with Buffalo's top WR. Teams have figured this out and now they just throw to other side of the field. My overall point is that unless the SID or coaches give him publicity, he will go relatively unnoticed because he doesn't register much in the way of stats. Though he does have 2 picks and 9 PD's this year...and thats with offenses completely avoiding him. This is a big week for him, call it make or break, BG will test him. Hopefully, the coaches let him match up one on one versus a zone coverage. If he shows well and runs well during the pre-draft, he will be a 4-6 rounder. Try this. Turn on a random game, without knowing if it's pro or college. Watch two plays. Look at the size and speed of the players. You will know instantly if you're watching college or pro. Sometimes quickness and elusiveness beats size at the "skilled positions." Happens in all levels of football. Just open your eyes and you'll see it. An inconvenient fact. Landon had the tools, big, quick, strong and a high motor who played to the edge. That was evident early on, and the fact he stuck as many times as he did proves that. He is fast shifty and strong. He probably would be a better returner than Carrie. Wells at 5'11", 202 and a reported 4.36 will bee a sure shot if he finishes strong, he need to tackle better, but I have seen pro coverage shills. Johnson is too small to play linebacker. Heitzman could also be a special teams project at the next level. Nobody despises to lose more than I do. Did you see his return at Minnesota after the Gophers score the go-ahead TD in the final minutes of the game? He got those yards when we really needed it, and it almost allowed us to tie the game after a few more plays and getting into FG range. Daz has a lot of heart in addition to his skills. I searched the web for draft prospects on the Bobcats, and those were the three names that came up. It's not too fair to judge JJ by his last few games, though, as he has been playing hurt.
