I only hate Monroe Slavin. I came back for a week and got my fill for the year.

Even though I love my Bobcats reading his consistently insufferable posts on every corner of this website absolutely ruined Bobcat Attack for me.

I know some may say something similar about the aggressiveness by which I've been known to post. And I think that would be fair to an extent. But ultimately a culture is what you decide to keep and what you decide to throw out. With that guy a BA regular you don't have to throw me out. I'm leaving.

Wouldn't it be easier to just not read what he says?

I tried that for a while, which led to a 10 month hiatus.

Really it's easier to do something 100% of the time than 98% of the time.

When I read an incredibly well thought out, time intensive post by L.C., etc al and then have to triple scroll past a series of capital letters and exclamation points by Monroe that respond only in form and not at all in content, effectively it's the same as reading Monroe's post.

Like politics and religion, this site is quickly becoming one with two polarized camps. The majority in the middle are now subject to being placed in one of the two camps based on a post or two. Ultimately, the middle will just leave if we cannot have a sane conversation about the state of the program.

I don't understand why the Sunshine Camp is not willing to admit there is a problem. It has become sacrilegious here to suggest that something might be fundamentally flawed with our pursuit of a MAC Championship. The appreciation of a long-term rise from the basement of the conference and the disappointment in the stagnation of the program are not mutually exclusive feelings. Like most tenured fans, I feel both.

I also am not going to call for anyone's head, although I would do things differently if I was coaching. I think I'd be more likely to make radical changes in order to infuse what's been absent. The energy that was on WMU's sideline 2 weeks ago was palpable. That energy is just missing from our sideline. The adjustments that need made during the season to keep our players sharp, focused and energized simply aren't there. Either the message needs to be changed, or the messenger needs to be changed.

It's not fair to fans to suggest that we should shut up and be happy with a .500 team every year because the program was really bad 20-30 years ago. I know Ohio Football was terrible 25 years ago. I was at all those games. My kids, however, don't really care about the 80's & 90's. In 5-10 years, will they want to spend their own money on OU tickets? The next generation of fans is who needs to be built right now, not those of us that will show up no matter what.

I agree with much of what you say here.

To me the difference between the two camps is this. One camp is focused on the players, and how hard they work, and how they risk injury, and views football as entertainment. To the other camp, the hard work of the players, and their risk of injury is irrelevant, and they are focused on their entitlement to see perfection. There isn't a lot of middle ground between those two views, I suppose, and I think that most of that middle ground is now gone, or sliding into one camp or the other.

I like your point LC. Sometimes its important to remember that we're dealing with 18-21 year old college students, most of whom will not go on to play professionally.

OU Country, you are spot on, along with L.C. This is mid-major college athletics we are talking about. Our teams really are student-athletes. Winning is important, but is not the only thing we should be totally focused on. Each year the MAC will have one champion. Does that mean that everyone else involved is a loser and should be fired, or benched ? No, college athletics is different than the NFL or NBA. You continue to coach your kids, and work towards improvement everyday! While doing that coaching and teaching, you also need to be evaluating and recruiting that next class ! We have some good players and good kids in this program. We are not dominating with multiple All-MAC talent, so we can always get better if we can identify MAC level talent and have enough success to get them to Athens for a visit !
We have a talented, hard working staff that are busting ass to be as good as we can be. The goal is to win the MAC. The next goal is to win the next game! Back the 'Cats !

I will try to back off and hold my tongue.

But this is crap, an intentional misrepresentation: "focused on their entitlement to see perfection."

No one has ever said that. What we do want is reasonable performance and strategy and reacting to circumstances. Reasonable. Instead, we see the same thing over and over again in terms of strategy and results.

Advocacy for one MACC is advocacy for a reasonable goal, given 11 years.

Those who are dissatisfied are dissatisfied with poor strategy and recruiting and losing to teams that we should not be losing--and losing badly--to 11 years in.

But no one ever suggested perfection.

There was very, very little dissatisfaction when we were rolling (thru the Miami loss at the time of the SI article). But, sadly, the roughly 40 games since then have meed markedly bad for the most part, espec in MAC.

Until then, certain posters were actually in very great praise of Solich.

Thanks. I've been in the wrong as it relates to this perspective before. It occurred during last year's basketball season. I was NOT proud of it. I hope I don't repeat it.

There's a spot somewhere in between that the fan's expectation to win and the fan's realization that we're talking about 18-21 year olds can co-exist. I'll agree with the frustration in that sometimes it seems like there's a repeating process of trying the same thing even though it isn't working, and that there isn't adaptation to the in game situations, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. But I'm not really in a position to be terribly critical because I'm not a student of the game of football.

Related to the game itself, the only things I know are: 1) to win in this game anymore, you MUST have a better than average QB, and despite the great people that are QBs seem to be, they aren't producing at an above average level. 2) Sometimes a good, hard working coaching staff needs a shake up. Maybe it's time for that, maybe not. It's not for me to say.

I feel like anytime you criticize the state of this program you get cast into this "he hates the program, the coaches, etc" group

Couldn't be further from the truth.

We have been a barely above average program since starting 7-0 in 2012.

Are we supposed to just sit silent and not only accept the mediocrity, but embrace it?

C'mon!

I'm guessing 99% of those criticizing things still respect Frank and have nothing but great appreciation for what he and the coaching staff has accomplished over the last 11 years. And I'm sure those 99% have nothing but respect for each and every player that goes out there and risks injury to represent the green-and-white.

But that doesn't mean we can't question things....like play-calling, effort, talent, etc.

I feel like so many come THISclose to actually taking a stance on something but are afraid of hurting someone's feelings.

I love this school....and I root hard for this program. I invest time and money into it and I want it to be the best it can be. It's tough to sit by and watch us get passed by the CMU's and WMUs and Ball State's of the world.

We have every reason to expect better than that and when we don't get it....we have every reason to question why we aren't. Whether it be coaches, play-calling, talent, 18-21 year old kids.....whatever it is, there's nothing wrong with questioning it.

Bottom line is, none of us is making those decisions for real. It's a freakin' message board....this is what you're supposed to do on it. This isn't an online pep rally.

I'm not asking anyone to whole-heartedly agree with everything....but respect a different viewpoint of your own.

If you think the program is "just fine"...so be it. I respectfully disagree. But don't tell me I'm wrong for thinking that.

I guess all the athletes should get a participation ribbon or trophy like the 6-8 year olds. Unless someone is a walk on they are "paid" with a scholarship. If you walk on your doing it for the love of the game and a chance to prove people wrong. I have zero empathy for kids on a scholarship, they are open to critique just like they will see when they get their first job in a year or two. I walked on at Ohio in 1970 and got my ass kicked every day and realized you have to be self motivated in life if you want to succeed. Nobody is going to kiss your ass and tell you how great you are in the real world if you don't produce.
My frustration is with the "team", something is broken and if you keep doing the same thing year after year you can't expect different results.

Nothing like internecine warfare taking place among Ohio fans during the total collapse of a season. It really seems to bring out the best in some people. I never realized this site had so many users with a flair for the dramatic, particularly the people who feel the need to post that they're not posting anymore. Do you guys also tell your friends on Facebook that you're quitting social media?

Just want to jump in with a couple of things

1.I don't buy the 18-21 year old kid argument.
If an 18 year old can be in the military,he/she should be able to handle the "pressure" of a college sport.

I wrestled D1 and played D1 soccer in the mid 70's.
Maybe we were more mature, but we were expected to give 100% and,as a team,we pushed each other.

2.I keep hearing about "depth".
But there sems to be a big drop off in "talent" when a first stringer goes down.

3.I wish we used an offense that didn't rely as much on the Q.B.'s running ability.
A Q.B.'s running is not something that is taught.

That system makes it difficult to "develop" Q.B.'s or substitue when a good runner goes down and the next Q.B. can't run as well.

This is starting to get fun! As I've somewhat matured and gotten older, sports have lost their appeal to me. Most of it is grown men treating games as if their life depended on the outcome. It is only a diversion to be enjoyed in your leisure time. So, to some of you, lighten up. If we win a championship, will that really change your life?
