A little help please. I read that Ohio lost these three. Could someone please elaborate. I guess, fortunately, a school event kept me from following the game today.

Injuries too white/polling and a 1st half suspension next week for Wells on a targeting call.

These losses will hurt a lot worse than just losing the game today, because it makes a loss next week much more likely -- not to mention making it harder to envision beating BG. Solich said White and Poling will miss at least a few games each.

I heard Q tell several people tonite at the volleyball match that he would be out 2-3 weeks. Was limping but not terrible. But he isn't a doctor so there's really no way to know if that's the way it's going to turn out.

So, was it the scheme? Or was it the loss of personnel? How can a team run the same play five times and get 40 yards or more each time?

I was afraid it might be a season ender, so 2-3 weeks is better than it could have been. I hope White is able to return this year, too. If he isn't, we may see Irons used for the plays White has been getting.

Poling was running up and down the sideline after his injury without a visible hitch. That's encouraging, but then again, he is one tough son of a gun. I didn't see the crackback block that got him, but that's the most upset I've seen Frank this year since the delay call against Minn...he ran out to midfield to give it to the refs.

Papi's injury looked much worse...anyone know if it's the same knee from last year? He's an aggressive kid, but I hate seeing him hurt running the kick out of the endzone, when bringing it out to the 25 on a touchback is designed specifically to reduce injuries.

The Wells ejection was on a good, clean hit.

Apparently you did not watch the game on tv, the replay which they showed in slow motion about 5 times shows Wells helmet squarely in the middle of his chest /neck. You can not target with you helmet or lead with your helmet and it was a good call.

For what its worth, Arkely thought it was a bad call. He said on twitter:

I could use some help on the targeting call on Wells.

Seems that every time I've seen this call made it is on the defensive player. Is not just as dangerous if the ball carrier leads with his helmet? If so, watch a replay of the hit Wells was flagged and pay attention to the WMU QB leading with his helmet.

Valid point, perhaps they both should have been flagged/ejected.

Wells used bad technique by leading with his head, but he was clearly not targeting. terrell lowered his head AFTER wells did as if to intentionally absorb the hit with his own noggin. It looked scary on replay and glad both are ok. This is as bad as the "catch" rule in the nfl that no one understands, and is called arbitrarily with no explanation.

We don't want to be arguing this one a year from now like the Blair Brown hit. :)

I think we just need to accept that it's a call we're going to see now and again. Sometimes it will be an opposing player ejected. Sometimes it will be a Bobcat. Rarely, if ever, will it actually involve someone deliberately targeting. Instead it will happen on a hard hit where the heads get a little too close by accident.

It's going to happen, so let's move along.

In my opinion it was a textbook example of targeting. Upheld on replay.

When the other player lowers his head and leads with his head...how is that targeting?

IMO (which isn't worth anything) both players should be called for targeting. Any time you lower your head to deliver a hit with the crown, that should be called, whether you are a tackler, ball carrier, or blocker. It's a safety issue for the hitter as much as the hittee.

But you will NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER have that called on the offensive player.

I agree with that. I also think the automatic ejection from targeting is a harsh penalty for something that usually is accidental.

Apparently this question comes up a lot and I found it on an Alabama blog regarding the same situation. They referred to Article 4 which says no player can target a "defenseless" player so in this situation if Wells had not lowered his helmet the QB could possibly be called for it but we know the result.

As I said before, I think true instances of "targeting" are rare. No sane person would risk paralysis and intentionally spear someone! However, because of the importance of avoiding the serious consequences, the rule-makers/rule-enforcers are being very strict, and anytime there is helmet-helmet contact, the defensive player is going to be ejected. That's just how it is, and it is going to happen now and again.

This year that's the first time it has been called on Ohio, but it has been called on an Ohio foe, too. I think it was Minnesota where the player hit Sebastian Smith in the endzone? That call was no more of an intentional "targeting" than this one was. However, like this one, there was helmet to helmet contact, and the result was that the defensive player was ejected.

I don't think that Wells was trying to "target", but once the hit happened, I do think it was inevitable that he would be ejected.
