The MAC attendance for the day! That includes the #22 rated Toledo Rockets and the all-world QB led BG Falcons. BSU had 7000 plus for the day as the MAC low vs our nearly 23000 as the high mark.Do have to give a nod to our faithful as a great many of us continually show up week after week season after season. Say what you want in spite of the bad pretzels antiquated facilities, unviewable big screen, not to mention the completely unwatchable second half, the faithful continue to show up in numbers that the "top" of the MAC would love to have.

Did the other schools have band day to pad attendance?

No, just homecoming.

I don't know which other schools have a "Band Day" and which ones don't. I do know that any or all of them could have one, and there are lots of promotions and giveaways that they can do to boost attendance as well.

Not at all Pete. As a huge supporter of the arts in general and schools in particular, nothing could be further from the truth. I was just commenting to my wife this morning how much I enjoyed reading about all of the plays and musicals that central Ohio schools will be performing this year as listed on pages E 4 and 5 of today's Dispatch. As for outreach, we/I've been bringing high school kids to OU for 30 years for summer workshops each summer. I'd put the number at close to 2000 if we're keeping track of attendance.

I've long found it remarkable that Ohio - given Athens' smallishness and somewhat isolated location - draws as well as it does for both football and basketball - especially because of spotty athletic success over the years.

I tend to think Ohio's fan support results largely from OU being a residential school. That is, a majority of students remain in Athens at night and on weekends. Compare that reality to the likes of largely commuter schools such as Akron, Kent and YSU and perhaps Toledo and BG.

That residential nature, I believe, creates particularly strong and lasting bonds with Alma Mater.

+1

The attendance is just as much about the University as whole as it is about the current state of the football program.

While I agree Mike we are a stay for the weekend type school one has to be impressed with our turnout of townies and long distance alums on a consistent basis thru thick and thin. Athens for sure is isolated and has a very limited area population to draw from. One would think a Toledo, nationally ranked and a city with a fairly large metro populous to draw from would be packing them in. Doesn't happen though. We don't take a backseat to any of the MAC when it comes to overall butts in seats.

Even if it's padded with "Band Day"... right?

We easily out-draw all the other MAC schools if you look at % of available seats filled, until we get to the week night games.

The week-night games are great for the program, but it's damn near impossible for me to make the game, and get to work the next day.

This will, by it's nature, cap the # of alumns that can make it back.

The numbers don't lie, they just tell different stories.

Even during basketball season, we have out drawn the league on week nights. Remember the Akron game 3 years ago on a Wednesday night? 10,000+ in the Convo outdrew the rest of the league combined that night. No padding there, just awesome fan turnout.

As a side thought here, it's so much easier for a Columbus fan like myself to take in an entire hoops game on a week night and still get home to go to work the next day.

It wasn't always the case Mike. Go back into the late 70's and early 80's Ohio was at the bottom of the conference in support. Success started again with Danny Nee in basketball and spilled over into other sports. Right now Volleyball is #27 in the country. Wrestling is preseason #21. Baseball won the MAC Championship last year. I do think program wide success helps drive the sports school perception. The perception among students is Ohio has good athletic facilities. With the Ohio brand fans have expectations. They want to see the Bobcats win.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

Well then, if the MACC is the standard, nothing less, no other acceptable measures, you all need to visit the powers that be and point out to them that the football staff has not won one. Perhaps Pelini could be gotten from Youngstown.

The love for the university and for Athens as a town are huge. I make a few trips back every year and I know several other alumni that do as well. I've been to two football games this year. I can't imagine that if I had attended Toledo I would be making that trek from 500 miles away on a regular basis. No one wants to visit if there's no there there.

Slightly OT, but A#1 Superfan Chuckie Landon had a pretty good article in the Herald-Disgrace today about the dangers of getting too caught up in attendance figures:
http://www.herald-dispatch.com/sports/marshall_sports/chu...

Basically, for Marshall football to meet its funding goals, they need to average 30,000 attendance at each home game. With two home games to go, they are averaging only 26,035, meaning they need to come close to sellouts the final two games (vs. 0-6 North Texas and 3-4 FIU) to hit their numbers.

I wonder what we need to average to hit our budget figures.
