The D-line and LBs will have their hands full with this one. Expect to see Franklin early and often. That's the key to the game right there. If Ohio wants to win this game, it has to stop Franklin. Period.

Quick start is essential. Jump on WMU early and limit the Franklin's touches. I am pumped up for Saturday. Should be a good atmosphere.

Respect Mr. Franklin, yes. However, Mr. Braverman & Mr. Davis will light you up as well. Coach Burrow's men will be challenged this week. Defenders wishing for All MAC need to step up.

This game really frightens me! We better be ready to play 60 minutes of good hard nosed football!

I sit here with the left half of my face sun burnt from my west-facing seats at yesterday's Bengals-Seahawks game (GREAT footbaw game!). Reminds me of the last time I burnt the left side of my face at a game... the last time WMU visited Peden stadium in 2006. Chris Garrett with the shifty punt return to the crib, Austen Everson's huge late option keeper, Michael Graham poking the ball out of a Bronco receiver's hands in the end zone on fourth down.

This will be my first game at Peden since the Miami ghost-out game two years ago. Can't wait (Bart Scott voice)!

Yes. Had similar feeling before Marshall. When the Game Notes come out check the stat comparison and you will feel a little better.

I can't take much into account from comparing Ohio to a team that played Michigan State, Ohio State and Georgia Southern. That stats are inherently going to be skewed. At the end of the year if these stats are the same, then this might matter.

Very good point. Thanks for bringing that up.

Without getting into comparing stats, we can still learn a few things from the stats. Here are a few things I notice:
1. First, WMU has a very efficient and productive passing attack. Given the difficult competition this is especially a warning sign.
2. Second is that they have a preference to passing over running. They have run it 173 times and have passed it 174 times. If you factor in that some of the runs were sacks and/or situations where the QB took off, they have probably been calling about 55-60% passes.
3. They don't seem to have a great placekicking squad. They are only 5-9 on FG, and have missed 2 extra points as well. They do have a good punter, though.
4. They have been vulnerable to rushing, giving up 5.9 yards/carry. Much of that was given up to Georgia Southern, but they gave up a fair number of rushing yards to most everyone except Murray State. Can Ohio run the ball on them? I guess we'll find out.

Braverman is the cog that makes the WMU offense move. We will need to blanket him in coverage. I wonder if Bass could have gone this weekend, but they wanted to rest him to make sure he could go vs. WMU.

Be careful of that pass/rush ratio. Heavy pass against MSU and Ga. Southern (86 pass/49 rush) - they were playing catch-up each time. Leaned on run against Murray, OSU, CMU (124 rush/88 pass). Looks like key is to get on them early and make them more pass oriented.

Like that GA So. ran all over them - 52 carries - 431 yards. Would love to see us run it 40+ times.

I marked this game down as the "turning point" for this season. This is going to be a tough match-up for Ohio. I say they'll be ready to rise to the challenge.

At the start of the season, I thought WMU could win the MAC West. Now I am not sure they are going to even finish with a winning record. If I had to guess right now, I'd say they lose to us, BG, NIU and Toledo (3/4 of which they play on the road) while winning their others to finish at 5-7.

That said, after last season, how can't this game concern you. They haven't looked good this year but I think they have the talent somewhere on that roster. Our defense is playing as well as any defense in the conference right now. I don't believe our defense is going to give up enough points to lose this at home.

I've seen crazier things happen.

I like the rest of your picks for the year, and hope you nail them all.

I agree, though. The next three games are key, and I feel like the Bobcats are still getting better, and they are still hungry.

And for the first time this season, our short kickoff strategy will be put to the test by Darius Phillips:

Special Teams Player of the Week: Western Michigan KR Darius Phillips
Western Michigan sophomore kick returner Darius Phillips (Dearborn Height, Mich.) had two more explosive kick returns against Central Michigan on Saturday, helping Western Michigan to a 41-39 victory. Phillips had two returns totaling 101 yards, including a 67-yarder in the first quarter. Phillips' 67-yard return set the Broncos up at the Chippewas' 30-yard line and the team scored its second touchdown of the day as a result, an 11-yard run by Jarvion Franklin. For the season, Phillips upped his average to 30.5 yards per kick return, good for tops in the MAC and 13th in the country.

Western Michigan gave up at least 37 points against every FBS opponent. It sounds like it going to be a high scoring game this Saturday. Victory against WMU is going to be predicated on staying in control as Ohio has done every game so far then making the plays down the stretch.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

Has anyone watched a WMU game? Why is their defense so bad?

Giving up about 460 yards per game. I saw their game against CMU and their run defense was porous.
Pass rush was not a threat and gave CMU lots of time to throw.

Remember they played MSU and tOSU.

I read that they have had a lot of injuries on defense, particularly on the defensive line. This site has no injury data for them, however:

This only shows one DL injury. We'll have to dig to find some more.

There's also a thread on the Bronco message board about defensive injuries.

We're only 1-2 vs WMU under Solich, but the win was the only home game in that time. We've lost big at WMU and won close at home. This will probably be the 2nd-best home foe on our schedule this year.
