Admittedly ignorant, I thought stupd cow aimed for a peak last year such that this would be kind of a cupboard bare, re-building year for them.

Can some of you who are near the scene, give the true info on what to expect. Returners of note? How is their qb'ing going to be? Defense?

Thanks.

From what I gather:

Offense: Their big RB is back. He was injured at the end of last season (shoulder) but is supposedly healthy. O line is supposed to be really good (I was told by one longtime T'erd fan that it's the best he's ever seen at Marshall...but I have heard that before so take it with a grain of salt). QB is a transfer. Big guy (6'5", 250ish) with a cannon arm, but not a whole lot of touch on his passes.

Defense: End and corner are the weak points. Safety should be really good (maybe the best athletes on the team) and LBs solid.

Marshall hosts Purdue tomorrow, Sunday at 3:00 EST on TV channel Fox Sports 1. I think we'll find out a lot about them on Sunday. I don't imagine they'll hold anything back while trying for a Big 10 win.

25,893 NMSU ('12 home opener)
25,211 Idaho ('14 home opener)
24,511 N Texas ('13 home opener)
24,000 Peden Stadium capacity

but you've still got some Marshall fans taking credit for the expected large crowd next week because "this game is OU's Super Bowl". It's so cute to watch them try to act like this is a lopsided rivalry.

I'm leaving for Huntington now. Will be interesting to see what they have this year. Wish Purdue was bringing the band because the boilermaker football team probably won't bring much.

Marshall has been recruiting very, very well. They bring back their talented WR's from last year. Their transfer QB put up big #'s wherever he was before (James Madison?) and overall their offense should be good again. This might be the toughest opponent on our schedule, including Minnesota. I expect they will beat Purdue.

This game will easily sellout. Students should show up in force since this is the freshman's first game. Excited for the atmosphere. I really hope we beat Marshall.

The clip they showed in the intro of Purdue's speech to his team was NOT inspiring. He was all about emotion with very little in the way of specifics (at least in what they showed on TV).

That may work once in a while but I'd rather have a prepared team, well-schooled in basics and strategy, that's game ready...set to play but not dependent upon geeked-up over emotion.

Early thoughts:

Birdsong is very good. He somewhat reminds me of Roethlisberger when he was at Fiami -- big, good arm, can run and has smarts. I think the big difference between Birdsong and Cato is that Birdsong isn't as big a threat to run, although he's tougher to take down because of his size.

The T'erd D line can be overpowered. Purdue really controlled the line of scrimmage in its two touchdown first-quarter TD drives. Our O line might be able to take advantage.

We can't make mistakes on offense. Appleby really telegraphed his first pass and it went for a pick-six. T'erd's LBs may be their strength on D.

We can beat them deep. Their D secondary seems to be a step slow.

I wonder what the effect will be on them playing in 90-degree heat with a short week between games.

FS1 needs to do their homework. Purdue has about 40,000 enrollment, not 14,000 (they used the same numbers for both schools). And Purdue didn't get the name "Boilermakers" from shoveling coal. It was actually used in a newspaper account of their victory over Wabash in the early 20th century and likely comes from their engineering students getting hands-on experience working on train engines.

Marshall's punt returner already cramping up in the 2nd quarter. Ouch.

And I agree, Roethlisberger is the player comparison for Birdsong. Strong arm. Not super mobile or quick, but big enough that he's hard to bring down.

Birdsong is quicker than I expected him to be for as big as he is. He doesn't have blazing speed, but he is definitely a capable runner. He is not as accurate of a passer as Cato was. I think if we can get pressure on him, he will make some shaky throws that we can possibly intercept. We have to find a way to stop Devon Johnson from running all over us. He is powerful/big back similar to the Idaho HB so hopefully we are prepared somewhat.

Purdue has had some success running on Marshall. If we struggle to run the ball like we did last year, I do not see us winning this game.

OHIO will have to be able to pass; Purdue very little running in the 2nd quarter to move the ball. Marshall will be getting to our QB, maybe not sacks but will be in the neighborhood. Herd's db's look good in man2man.

I wonder if they do that we are Marshall chant when on 3rd and 5 at the 10 about 3 seconds before the snap a defensive lineman comes across when the O-line isn't even set!!

Purdue QB had a slick play. Fakes the handoff left, then goes in an option to the right. Appears to be running and even stiff arms a Marshall player flat to the ground then calmly tosses to the trailer who had cut it up the field for a wide open TD from about 8 yards out. The ref could have thrown a flag on the Marshall player flattened by the stiff arm as he didn't know the QB had tossed it and rolled over and tackled him!! Would have been a nice insult after getting decked by the Purdue QB.

Marshall's rb Johnson is a runaway train if he makes it through the line.

Marshall QB reminds me of OUr departed Snyder--but bigger, but the same red hair..

I've been more impressed with Purdue than I have Marshall so far. This is not the same team that beat Ohio last year. I think we'll beat Marshall by about 10.

Heitzman will be a blessing. Would not be surprised to see a special heavy alignment for Marshall.

Pretty impressive drive there from Birdsong taking Marshall down the field. 34-31. Under 3 to play. Lets see if Marshall can hold Purdue.

It's easy to see why Purdue is picked dead last in their division in the Big Ten. Marshall is not as strong as they were last year and I do believe Ohio is stronger than last year's team.. Marshall will be favored next week but they are beatable. Ohio will have to execute and not turn the ball over. Special teams will be key as well. Yaz will have to be money!

As most college qb's, stupd cow qb locks on a single receiver a lot.

Unlike Idaho, stupd cow appears to have guys who can pass cover.

Grudging admiration for stupd cow fans. They were into it today in a way rarely, if ever, heard at OHIO FOOTGALL PEDEN STADIUM, OHIO.

Difficult to judge on only one game for each side: We can beat stupd cow. But it won't be easy at all.

Hard to judge how good Marshall is since Purdue has now lost 7 games in a row. The Purdue QB wasn't very good and missed a sure TD pass in the end zone. That being said we gave up 28 to Idaho so I would think Marshall can put 40 on us so 41-38 Marshall. I hope I am wrong but until I see our D step up and shut down a decent passing attack I don't see how you can pick Ohio after the LY results.

I saw parts of the second half, and I can't really take any impressions from that. It was pretty sloppy on both sides.

CMU won at Purdue by 21pts last year, NIU won at Purdue by 31pts two years ago. Marshall needed two pick sixes to beat them at home this year. Color me not impressed.

I thought that this Purdue team looked much improved from the one that I saw in a few games last year. I would not be surprised if they made a bowl game at 6-6 or even 7-5.

I will guarantee you that Marshall will give us all we can handle. We had trouble stopping Idaho, I don't think it will get any easier this coming weekend because they are appreciably better than Idaho.
