To think that was without Johnson.
Absolutely dominant. The kind of performance to make you wish they were playing tomorrow.

I didn't want to leave Peden. Devon Johnson is a dominant back. We shut him down drive after drive in the 2nd half.

Wow.

Well, Johnson did have a couple nice runs, so he ended up with 170 yards on 21 carries, and that isn't shabby. More impressive is that Birdsong was held to 64 yards of total offense. He got 84 yards passing on 29 attempts, with 2 interceptions and no TDs, but he also lost 20 yards on 3 sacks. His quarterback efficiency was a miserable 55.4.

In fact, other than Johnson, the entire rest of the team only had 71 total yards.

I felt that Johnson did not have much traction in the 2nd half. He had a big big big run towards the end of the first but after that I thought we stopped him

Super impressed ! The herd fans can blame the zebras as much as they want . Ohio earned it with dominating D. I'm actually shocked how well they played and im pumped for next week :D. Also just another thought offense was blah tonight but got the job done when they needed to . JD is solid but the offense with Vick is better but still not MACC level but I know for sure this D is MACC caliber !!!! Go Ohio !!!! Also I hope one can play next week

The officials were certainly active, but there were flags against both teams. It wasn't one sided. I believe they could sense that it was a very emotional, very hard hitting game, and they didn't want it to get out of hand, so they were quick to flag late hits or unsportsmanlike conduct. I didn't see any calls in the game that were controversial, though. I thought all the calls on both teams were correct. All the holds were holds. All the blocks in the back were correct. All the calls for late hits were deserved.

OUr D was helped a lot by Marshall's offense committing penalties at a rate that you rarely see.

After a couple years of porous defense, this was such a refreshing game. Really hope that front seven can stay healthy. Lots of 21-17 type games this year, I'm thinking.

Credit to our defense for the three holding calls on the Marshall offensive line -- would've been sacks otherwise.

The offensive pass interference was a scheme issue based on the way they run their routes -- sometimes it is called and sometimes it isn't, but it was the correct call.

Agree that the rate seemed uncommon with flags coming on most of the Herd's first half series, but the defense had something to do with why they were getting flagged. We played a physical, aggressive game up front.

All lost season we had just 19 takeaways. Already have 7 this season. The D is much more energetic, much more aggressive and much more opportunistic than last year.

More than that, they are comfortable in the new defense, and familiar with what everyone else is doing. Thus they can use the defense as a tool, rather than just focusing on executing it, and learning how it works in various situations.

Interesting. I note that Ohio's starting lineup against Marshall was kind of an unusual combination, a 5-1 defense. There were the usual two Safties (Jones, Carpenter) and two Defensive Ends (Laseak, Basham), but there were three defensive tackles (Tautuaiki, Sayles, Porter) and three Cornerbacks (Bass, Wells, Layton), but only one Linebacker (Poling).

Where are you finding this information? The final stats on the athletics department website show J.D. Spraque (#99) as a defensive starter and Porter listed as #5D. I thought we ran a nickel defense to start with two LBs -- Keith Moore as a starter with Poling. It could've been Daugherty who I thought rotated in later -- he isn't "#5D", but he is #50.

Yes, that is where I found it. 99 is actually Laseak, so I ignored the "J.D. Sprague" as a defensive starter, and assumed that the number was right, not the name.

Porter is 54, and he definite did play. Daugherty is listed as playing, but not starting. You could be right that Daugherty started, and Porter played, rather than the reverse. That would actually make more sense. I noticed the extra corner, but I never noticed three defensive tackles in at once.

I don't want to overlook or disrespect SE Louisiana but I am looking forward to seeing how we stack up against Minnesota in two weeks. The Gophers gave TCU all they could handle and pulled out a strong road win against Colorado State last week. If we play them tough and keep the game close into the 4th quarter I think we have a chance. Either way I am very encouraged about our play after two games.

There are some teams we will line up against this year in MAC play that we owe after some near misses (and some beatdowns) in recent years. Excited to see how things progress!

For a different opinion as to who got the start, Arkley's blog mentions that Chad Moore got the start (not Daugherty, and not Porter). I trust Arkley a lot more than the "official" game stats, which always seem to have suspicious data.

I'm not as excited as you are, but I think the game is going to be similar to the Marshall game. Minnesota is going to pound the running game on us just like the Herd did with Johnson. We'll see if their QB makes more plays than Marshall's. And I fully expect their team to be more disciplined under Kill.

Moore started. Daugherty did seem to be on the field a lot as well.

In the last 5+ seasons that has covered the most recent era of the Battle of the Bell here are all the times Marshall's offense was held to 10pts or less-

6pts L ('11) UCF
7pts L ('11) OHIO
7pts L ('10) #2OSU
10pts L ('15) OHIO
10pts L ('11) #13VaTech
