Wanted to clarify that we are SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA, not Southeast. We also go by SLU when abbreviated and not SELU or SELA ... both are pretty common mistakes by fans and media of programs we don't play on a regular basis.
Now that we got that out of the way, we are looking forward to our trip and and the opportunity to play a much improved Ohio Bobcat team. Let's hope for a good, clean, hard-fought game!

From the Stats link in Ted's post.
SLU opponents have only 59 rushing attempts with an average of 1.9 yds/per attempt. Opponents thus far are passing for 289/game while SLU is passing for 41/game. Will be interesting to see how Albin/Isphording attack the Lions.

Looking at this team they look dangerously athletic in the secondary 3-4 SEC transfers in the secondary hopefully we ground and pound them into submission. They shouldnt have any tape on our QB but I'm not sure if thats good or bad yet.

I think that has more to do with the teams they played in their first two games. Florida Tech threw it on almost every down. Their leading rusher averaged 8 yards a carry (and he might have been a QB as well) but the QB was sacked a bunch which made their overall numbers look abysmal. Northwestern State looked like they ran a more conventional offense but their numbers are also dragged down by the QBs. They averaged over 4 yards a carry with the QBs removed.
So basically no conclusions can be made about their rush defense. Their defense has created 12 turnovers in 2 games however.

I note that Southeastern Louisiana is abbreviated on ESPN as "SELA", so it must be a constant battle for them. I guess it could be worse, though. One of their foes, Florida Tech, is abbreviated "FLTH". I wouldn't want a nickname that could be pronounced "filth".
Looking at the stats for SLU, the thing that stands out to me is that they like to run the ball, and their passing stats are unimpressive. They average over 5 yards a carry, and 300 yards a game rushing. As far as passing, they are only 9-24-2 for 83 yards, only 3.46 yards/attempt.
To repeat an expression we see on here from time to time, "run the ball, stop the run, win the game". SLU is effective at running the ball, and stopping the run. Ohio is effective at running the ball and stopping the run. It's strength against strength, so it should be an epic battle up front. Whoever gets the best of that battle will win.
I predict that Ohio wins that battle, and wins the game 24-6.

Over half of NW State's rushing yardage against us came on four plays. They hit us with a 27 yard run on a 3rd and short when we slanted in the wrong direction and another 27 yard run on a draw in the second half when we were up 20. The other two were a QB scramble for about 15 on a third and long and I think they had a zone read keep by the QB for 17. They also ran a WR reverse for about 10 or 11 yards and that was pretty much it for their run game. Take out five plays total and they were around 100 yards of total offense.
Florida Tech came out in a completely different offense than what we saw on tape and took a while to adjust. They ran five wides on us just about all night and went Oregon/Texas Tech tempo. They also had huge WRs, several in the 6'4 and 6'5 range. What little rushing yardage they had were QB draws or wildcat runs.

Per Solich's weekly press conference, SLU is primarily a triple option team, and they also do some unusual things on defense. That should be interesting. Here's a summary of the press conference from Arkley's blog: http://tinyurl.com/oxrs3m9

They're ranked 17th in this week's 1AA coaches poll. This may be one of the best 1AA teams we've played in quite some time. It may be difficult to avoid a letdown, but I hope our guys come out with the same energy and focus that they had Saturday night.

This one makes me nervous. A team that does things fundamentally different than what you normally see. 50 front on D and the option. I think the majority of us that visit the board know how that offense can make you instantly competitive without comparable talent.

We are coming off a big rivalry win and we play a Big 10 team next week. Our opponent is a Top 25 FCS program. Classic trap game. The reassuring thing is that Frank Solich has always kept the players focused for games like this in his time at OHIO.
I've seen crazier things happen.

I continue to get the positive feeling from Frank in all his statements, quotes etc. that he is optimistic for this years team. I did not get any feeling in reading or listening to Frank, last night on the coaches show, that the injuries to our 2 QB's are a big concern to him at this point in the year. This clearly makes me feel that he really feels good about our bench in that position.

That's sort of what I was thinking. Hard to draw any real conclusions based on your first two games. I'm guessing your run defense is good but I'm also guessing we'll do better than 2.9 per carry. One thing is for certain. If you keep up the pace on forcing turnovers you will do well.

This may be a game of backup QBs. SLU's starter went down early last week and apparently has a sprained AC joint in his throwing shoulder. Their coach may play it cautiously because they have a bye next week, and they want him to be as healthy as possible going into Oct. Their backup is a redshirt freshman who struggled early but came through late for the win. http://www.hammondstar.com/sports/lions-overcome-scrappy-...
Our D needs to dial up the pressure like they did last week.

We're not really an option team. We run some option and zone read out of the spread, like a lot of people these days, but we're usually pretty balanced offensively. We've had some weird circumstances the first two weeks which has led to us running it 80-90% of the time, but that's not our typical offense. We'll probably be starting Utah transfer, Donovan Isom, this week ... he's more of a classic pocket passer who can run. We threw him in the fire last week after our starter went down so we pulled the reins back a bit. Considering he'll have a full week's prep as the starter, plus we need to open up our passing game to get ready for our conference run, my guess is we throw it a lot more on Saturday.

That's Ohio's offense as well, so it should look familiar to us.

Trap game? Let down? Really?
OHIO won the MAC last year, went undefeated and are now 2-0 then you might expect a trap game or a let down.
If there is a let down then it is ALL on the team leadership and COACHES. There should only be HUNGER FOR MORE OF THE SAME. Since we have the best leadership and coaches, expect the Bobcats to perform as they did the first two games.

I do not expect a letdown because I think our coaching staff is very good at keeping players focused. Frank Solich's record against FCS opponents in his time here speaks to that. While I don't expect a letdown, my point was that this game has the commonly referenced signs of being a trap game: We are 2-0, we are coming off a rivalry win/big win and we have what many have called our toughest opponent next week. Meanwhile, our opponent is a ranked team in FCS.
I've seen crazier things happen.

FCS upsets don't happen randomly very often. They happen when a traditional FCS power opens the season against a poorly coached FBS team. Otherwise its very rare. Ohio hasn't lost to an FCS school since 2002 one of the longer streaks in the MAC. I found a list of records of FCS schools against FBS and its the same schools pulling off upsets. Listing the teams that have pulled the upset since 2000 by winning percentage. Only 5 FCS programs have an all time winning percentage over 30% against FBS.

We win this game. A loss would not be good. This one shouldn't be real close over the last 10 minutes. I don't know much at all about the oppo, but I expect a level of ease for us rather akin to the Idaho game.
If we're as good as we think we are, it's a win. First and foremost, our D stops 'em.
