Not too long ago, OCF posted about attendance figures back in the day. I couldn't find the post but this picture lends some credence to his claim of 20,000+ in attendance.

Was that picture taken from the Goodrich Blimp?

I miss baseball on the other corner. That plot of land could be used for better athletic department purposes than large booby traps.

Thanks for finding this, Alan. In the SIU and Miami games I was referring to, there were even more end zone bleachers as temporary ones were placed along side the semi-permanent pictured here. These bleachers angled from the pictured ones over into the track. No, L.C. it wasn't the Goodrich Blimp, or even the GOODYEAR Blimp. ;-) The photo was probably taken from one of the OU Air Force planes. The Columbus Dispatch once in the day ran an expose on Alden's Air Force. Anyone else remember this story, or the attendance at these big games in the 1960s?

It could be used better for almost anything than punch card park. Maybe plant some trees in the middle of it at least?

Great Photo! It brought back many memories. I believe the photo is from 1967. Note the crane down at the lowest level of the Convo (West Green side)also the pedestrian access ramps to the building's entryways appear to be unpaved. Since the Convocation center was opened in the spring of 1968, I conclude that this was shot in the fall of 1967.

That was the first year of the 110 and, given the uniform color of the leaves on the trees was most likely that season's first home game (as well as first ever pregame and half time performances for the 110).

If I'm right about the year and season, that makes this the Bobcat's third game on the schedule - 30 Sept 67 vs. Kent State. If this is true, then it just might have been taken from the Goodyear Blimp. That game (& halftime show) was carried by ABC as a regional game of the week. I can't remember the presence of the blimp but, it is certainly a possibility that that dirigible was there.

I am pretty sure that Ohio lost this game on the field, but some weeks later (perhaps after the season?) the game was forfeited to Ohio due to Kent's use of an ineligible player. The forfeiture resulted in the Bobcats being named MAC co-champs (5-1 in MAC that season). The next season, of course, Ohio left no doubts about who the MAC Champions were and the team earned the 1968 110 a trip to Orlando. Thanks guys!

Alan that picture was the crowd for just one game when the 17,500 stadium was full. The population of Athens County in 1970 was 54,889 and in 2010 it was 64,757 so there is some increase in the capacity to put fans in the stands since those times. Your general point that fan support hasn't changed that much from the 60's is fairly accurate. What I think happened over the last 20 years is the athletic department has done a good job of cultivating a season ticket base and getting a regular commitment from the fans. I think a listed crowd of 28,000 and a $60 dollar ticket is as much juice as can be squeezed from the Bobcat fanbase. The athletic department wants to keep a tight ticket as a hedge against down years.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086
