Unless I missed announcement somewhere along the line, FBschedules now has Ohio playing the Volunteers in 2016. This would be along with playing Texas State and Kansas the same year. A little jazzier schedule than recently.

Schaus is the man when it comes to scheduling. Literally the one responsible for it so with him staying at Ohio that means more seasons of 6 home games.

I looked there, and I don't see that game, either on Ohio, or on Tennessee:

For 2016:

At Kansas
???
???

Kansas is part of a home and home, as is Texas State. Thus I'd expect the other two games to be an FCS school in Athens, and a money game like Tennessee on the road, so it could be true, just not posted yet.

Huh? Of course we'll have six home games. This is no major accomplishment. We've had six for a very very long time. Check the record books.

It's listed under nonconference games with dates to be announced. They have Tenn Tech listed there too for Tenn. Note that Tenn plays VaTech at the Bristol Motor Speedway that year.

Well, I wouldn't call six years "a very, very long time".

But the NCAA went to 12 game seasons in 2006. We've had 6 home games ever since. Before that was mostly 5 in an 11 game schedule, which I would think would be the norm for a "lower half" type program.

Even after the jump to 12 games, there were only 5 home games in 2006 and 2008. It wasn't until 2009 that Ohio started having 6 every year. Even now, if Ohio wants to get big name P5 schools to visit, they would have to do 2:1 deals, which would mean going back to only 5 home games. Also, some would like to eliminate the FCS games, and if they did three 1:1 deals and a money game on the road, that would mean alternating 5 and 6 home game seasons.

The Ohio-Volunteers game for 2016 is listed under Ohio in the composite MAC schedule area. I came across it while checking out the Miami-Notre Dame game in 2017.

A D 1 football program with less than 6 home games would be considered an irrelevant program today. No need to heap praises on anyone for doing the minimum. Now if we can get 7 home games a year, pin the medals on folks.

Two money games 5 years out of 6 (to offset the loss of the 2:1 deal, 1/6 home games)
One 1:1 game (1/2 home game)
Four MAC home games
Result 5 home games every year, every third year one big team at home, and the other two years the fifth game would be G5/low P5 teams.

B. Current strategy
One money game (no home games)
Two 1:1 deals with either G5 or lowly P5 teams (one home game/yr)
One FCS game (one home game
Four MAC home games
Result: 6 home games a year, one of the home games would be FCS, the other would be a G5/low P5 team.

C. Similar, but with no FCS game
One money game (no home game)
Three 1:1 games (1.5 home games)
Four MAC home games
Result: alternating seasons of 5 home games and 6 home games. All home games would be G5/low P5 teams.

D. IDK if this would work, but it might occasionally get 7 home games
Two money games 2 years out of 3 (no home game)
One FCS game (1 home game)
One bought G5 team, at a price lower than you are getting for your money games
One year out of 3, a 1:1 series (1/6 home game)
Four MAC home games
Result: Seven home games every six years. One would be FCS, one a low G5, and the one every sixth year would be a G5/low P5 team.
To work, you'd have to get significantly more for your money games than you pay to buy the G5 home game. If you got $1 m for an extra money game and could buy a G5 home game for $667k, it would work, because over a three year period the money from 2 money games would pay for the three bought G5 games.

All of these would produce similar revenues, so the question is, is it more important to have big name teams at home, or more important to have 6 home games every year? I think that the current strategy makes the most sense, and seemingly so does everyone else, because it is what almost every G5 team is doing.

It's also true that the current scheduling strategy has some variability, and that's where the AD comes in. All 1:1 deals are not created equally. The higher the football profile of a school, and the better the negotiator your AD is, the better the 1:1 deals can be. When you have a low profile (are rarely winners, rarely on TV, rarely in bowls, etc.), the deals you can get may be Sunbelt teams like Idaho and New Mexico State. As your profile improves, you can get teams like Kansas and Cincinnati to agree to 1:1 deals.

I would think playing/beating a low level FBS team is better than playing lowly FCS teams like Norfolk. I know Norfolk was a pretty big crowd because it was early in the year but how many more bobcat fans might a more recognizable FBS team bring to Peden? I'd go for a Temple or UCONN or Rice or someone like them on a one for one.

But remember, one would be at home, and the next year it would be on the road. That would be strategy C, above, and would give you alternating 5 and 6 game home schedules. Whether the revenue was better or worse would depend on whether the home gate from the FCS game was enough to pay the FCS team, which it probably isn't.

In reality, we only have 4 home games as it is. Those midweek November night games may be at home but they hardly seem like a home game. I'd say stick with the six we have like the vast majority of other D 1 schools.

Plus they were still trying to escape the awful 2:1 deals. 2008 was the year they had to convert the home game against Northwestern to an away game to keep the books solvent.
