Frank Solich has also gone 12-12 in conference play over the last three seasons.

Yeah, but we're not Mich. Most of us remember when being 12-12 over three years was close to heaven.

There was a lot more going on there than just the record. The fans hated the new gameday experience that the former AD was trying to instill, and the mediocrity on the field just added to the displeasure. After they failed to make it to a bowl, the interim AD had little choice. Plus, he couldn't remember who the real Ohio is.

This was the first sign that he wasn't the smartest tool in the shed.

He's also ruined any chances he could ever be hired by the real OHIO. ;-)

Michigan fans are truly insane and delusional. My family is full of them so this is a great time for me to sit back and laugh at the coaches they want to bring in. I would be truly shocked if Jim Harbaugh left the NFL to coach college football. There are probably 10 NFL teams that would take him other than the 49ers.

Personally, I think they need to drop the whole "Michigan Man" crap and bring in someone who will pump life back into the program. Rich Rodriguez would have been a great coach for them, but he never got the support he needed from the AD. Hell, most of the athletes that Hoke won with were Rodriguez players anyway.

And, Rich Rod is one win away from being the football final 4 discussion. (They won't make it. But, they'll be in the discussion.)

Hackett has already declared that he wants to get out of the "Michigan Man" box.

I think they should. Two wins over Oregon away from home would probably be the two best wins anyone has. Add in wins over Arizona State, at Utah, Washington and Nevada and it looks even better. The losses to USC (last second FG) and UCLA (17-7 on the road) aren't bad.

More to the point, why did he delete the additional information that he originally posted, that Michigan was the winningest program in America? Presumably that would have made it too easy to make a distinction.

OK, in which case I apologize. I clicked on the link again, and that's the first sentence in the link, and I guess I thought it was in your post rather than in the link, and that you had edited it out.

Rumors have Harbaugh to Michigan for $8m a year. The inflation in coaching pay is just ridiculous.

It is! Having a daughter attending UM I have had the opportunity to see their athletic campus. The resources UM has to throw at athletics is just beyond comprehension. And they're expanding! Probably why it costs us so much to send her there.....

Also just as shocking to me as far as salaries go is the $800K a year Fleck's getting at WMU! Holy ****!

He was making $5 million per year with the 49ers. A 60% pay raise to go from pro to college....and the net is probably even more than that once you figure tax savings (assuming California state income tax is more than Michigan's).

There are two ways this can go:

1) Wisconsin-sort of power running game with the recruiting cache and resources of Michigan builds a super power. He could build a program that is right there with Ohio State — and more physical and more capable of turning out NFL style QBs and RBs — in two or three years.

2) He's a petulant child and a disaster and implodes. He's gone in two seasons and Michigan football is dealt yet another — and maybe irreparable — blow to its hopes of ever being a top three program ever again. It is relegated to Notre Dame status.

See his work at Stanford. First he will get his staff, a very good one, then they begin the very tough job of catching up with powers that be. Anyone care to wager who will next win a CC, Frank or Jim?

And Harbaugh inherits much better players, if recruiting class rankings are accurate, than he did at Stanford. Michigan's recruiting classes have all ranked in the Top 10 the last 3 years.

First on Harbaugh's to do list: schedule a home-and-home with Ohio. Dare to dream!

Well, if his predecessor left some notes lying around about his dream of beating Ohio and how important the Ohio game was, maybe Harbaugh will ask the AD to schedule an OHIO game or two. ;-)

Some of you may want to put down the crack bowl and perhaps back away from the liquor cabinet prior to posting.

Agree!

The businessman in me asks: Why would a Board of Trustees choose to pay a coach who was making $5 mil $8 mil when it is likely they could have signed him for much less?

I've asked that same question after reading about many multi-million dollar coaching hires. Perhaps the answer is: It's not Board members' money, and their Board tenure and compensation doesn't depend on the success of the coach and the enterprise, that is, the football program.

It doesn't? Consider that in Nebraska, when a Regent declined to take a position on whether Bo Pelini should be fired or not, saying that wasn't a decision for the Regents, he had someone jump into the race to oppose him, and was nearly defeated. I personally think that the only reason he was re-elected was that the losses to Wisconsin and Minnesota came after the election.

What you say is how it should be, but today the reality it that yes, the Regents' job security may in fact be affected by the performance of the football team.

New report says it's only $5 million per year after all, with the extra $3 million going to staff.

I wonder if the Nebraska situation is widely applicable or an infrequent exception.

Considering that university Boards usually include some business execs makes it harder for me to understand their willingness to shower coaches with many more dollars than would be needed to successfully recruit.

Much of the compensation on these huge contracts comes from boosters organizations. I think the base salary is negotiated at fair market value, then the ancillary income streams are added in on top.

Personally, I have no problem with coaches getting large salaries to run programs that make money. Michigan is a great university academically, but athletics is a big part of their national image. I'll bet they see increased applications and foundation giving once they return to winning. The large salaries are all part of the endowment machines.
