According to sources...

Ironically, this is a very Solich-esque hire for Nebraska.

In actuality wouldn't Nebraska been better off or certainly no worse off than they are now if Pederson had just kept Frank. They have yet to hire someone who has come close to having what they already had in Solich.

I've been saying for years that someone should have hired Riley away from Oregon State. I have a feeling if you can win in Corvallis, OR (which is a very remote location from what I have heard) and develop NFL players there, then you can pretty much do it anywhere. Maybe, just maybe, Nebraska will have a QB who can actually throw an accurate forward pass for once. The guy has done about as much as you can do with the talent and resources given to him.

Corvallis. Just off I-5, about 90 minutes south of Portland and 40 minutes north of Eugene. Not nearly as isolated as some other schools including Ohio, Virginia Tech, Washington State (Pullman is REALLY isolated), etc.

Oregon State just doesn't have the same level of private support that Oregon has in Eugene with generous backing from one Phil Knight who got his undergrad at Oregon - and MBA at Stanford which also benefits from Knight's largesse.

PULLMAN! That's the city I was thinking of, not Corvallis. Thanks MJ.

This hire seems to have surprised everyone, and Nebraska fans have "mixed" reactions, for the most part. It should be interesting, anyway. He may or may not win more games than Pelini, but his demeanor will fit the state better than the prior coach's did.

I'm certain it will never happen but it can be fun to dream - wouldn't it be terrific if Pelini rejoined Solich to become the Bobcat's DC??? Holy buckets!!! What he did in Frankie's last year as NU's head coach with the defense was nothing short of miraculous!!

(For what it's worth, I wish Pelini had paid more attention to defense at NU and had hired himself a first-rate, grooming-to-soon-be-HC, Offensive Coordinator. I may go to my grave believing the defensive lapses leading to blow-out losses to the likes of Wisconsin, Ohio State, Michigan, et al. had more to do with his ouster than any other single thing he said or did during his years as Head Coach.)

My "football heart" will now be in three places on gameday: with the Huskers, with the Bobcats, and with whoever hires Bo Pelini (unless it's Tejas - I just can't do that!!!)

There are tens (or hundreds) of thousands of people who have wondered this same thing. The whole Pederson-Callahan era is something few want to remember.

Like Callahan, Pelini needs to get back to the NFL. He will always wear out his welcome at the college level. There is "More Than Winning." Read the book.

I don't know. Personally I think Pelini would fare better as a defensive coordinator than as a head coach. That way he could be out of the limelight, and avoid most of the press interactions. Callahan, similarly, fares better without those, but for a different reason.

As I read about Riley, he does seem to have a lot in common with Solich. He's a nice guy, hard working, highly respected by his players, keeps himself physically fit, is good at evaluating talent, and his emphasis is on playing fundamentally solid football, not the latest gadgets. He stays competitive in games, and wins the ones he should, plus some that he shouldn't.

If he goes 59-18 over the next few years, he'll probably be fired about the time Solich is ready to retire, and he's about 10 years younger than Frank. ;)

Oregon State is an interesting parallel for Ohio. They have an all-time record of 520-555-50, compared to Ohio at 531-535-48. Since 1971 they have 11 winning seasons, of which Riley had 8 of them. So, how do Oregon State fans feel about him being gone? Continuing the parallel, it seems that many Oregon State fans are happy to have Riley gone. It seems he's never won a MACC, er, Pac-12 Championship, and his Pac-12 record is actually under .500 for the last four years, and this year they won't be going to a bowl. Fans also criticize him for his Offensive scheme, and for time management:

In the end, they thank him for his time there, and for leading them back to respectability, but feel that his time is past, and they need new energy, and a more exciting offense.

It will be interesting to see how it goes.

Did he ever run any two-back sets? QB ever go under center? ;-)

No doubt. I think I read he runs a pro-set offense. I'm guessing Oregon State fans want a more wide open offense, perhaps a spread. ;)
