Did anyone else catch this program on ESPN last night?

They made a reference to a Randy Moss touchdown catch and subsequent "throw to McDonalds" in a game.

It happened quickly but at first glimpse I thought maybe it was against Ohio since the opposing team was wearing green and white. I realize that more teams wear these colors but it did catch my attention.

At first glance I thought it was Ohio too, then I saw Burke confirm it on Twitter later that night.

That was a really interesting 30 for 30. I had no idea, or must have forgotten completely, that Jason Williams aka White Chocolate was Randy's basketball teammate in high school. Also interesting how Randy and his buddies were linked in parallel universes with Randy being a star professional and Singleton making it to the pros but it never panned out. How many times have we heard that story?

Yep. I think that was Tevell Jones and Dennis Fitzgerald on the coverage. That game was for the 1997 MAC East title. MU shut down the option, and Ohio finished 8-3 on the year and as one of the best Ohio teams in the last 40 years if not the best.

I watched a lot of Marshall football during those 1996 and 1997 seasons (before I found religion, realized the error of my ways, and converted to Bobcatism). I still rank Moss as the single most dominant college football player I have ever seen. I remember one game in the 1996 I-AA playoffs (it may even have been the championship game vs. Montana), the defense tried triple coverage on him. Didn't matter. Moss jumps 2 feet over everyone on a 40 yard bomb, pulls the ball in, all three defenders bounce off him, and he gallops into the end zone.

For some reason I was thinking the throw to McDonald's was vs. Toledo in the MAC Championship game after he caught his 25th TD of the season, but that must not have been the case.

I remember the classy Mr. Moss mock mooning us cheesheads in Green Bay one terribly cold day - lol. He was kind of an ass, but one hell of a ball player. That's what makes the game fun.

As much of a clown some people think Randy was, I would take him over Terrell Owens any day of the week.

When I was sitting there watching it and remembering how great he was, I thought to myself "how did this guy not win the Heisman?" Then I remembered that was the year Charles Woodson carried Michigan on his back to a national championship.

And wow, that was awesome to see Randy in Seminole gear for FSU. His RS Sophomore Year they would have had a lineup of E.G. Green, Laveraneus Coles, Peter Warrick and Moss. That's insane!

Also read on Twitter that Moss was very close to signing with Florida before FSU. They did mention that in the film that Florida was the other school in the running for him after Notre Dame let him go. I can't help but wonder how many points Steve Spurrier would have put up in the Fun 'n Gun with Danny Wuarffel, Randy Moss, Ike Hilliard, Reidel Anthony, Jacquez Green and Fred Taylor. My God.

Can someone explain? What was the "throw to McDonalds???"

+1

And until the very late stages of the game, Randy was held in check by Fitz and Tevell, including one bone jarring hit early in the game on a slip screen that dislodged ball from body, and rattled his teeth.

when he broke the TD record, he threw the football out of the stadium into the McDonalds parking lot. (the endzone was not built up like it is today).

Randy Moss is one of those guys you believed could do anything because of his sheer athletic ability. Pro basketball player? Yup. Baseball? Sure. Track and field? Yeah.

After he scored a TD, he threw the ball out of the stadium and it landed in a McDonald's parking lot. Back then, the stadium was only maybe 15 rows of seats in that endzone and the McDonald's was like 30-40 yards away. How true that is I don't know.

It happened!

There is a McDonald's right across the street from the south end zone of Joan Edwards Stadium in Huntington.

Randy said something like "he was going to throw the ball to McDonald's after scoring" and did just that (or attempted to).

Edit-several steps too slow and walked away from the computer for a few moments before I posted.

I don't question the throw, more the validity that a McDonalds was that close to the stadium. But then again, it is Huntington.

I looked it up myself.....it's literally across the street. It would be like throwing into Punchcard Park from our north end zone.

McDonalds is still there, sits directly on the South side of the stadium. You can spit off the top row of bleachers into their drive-thru lane.

I think Sebastian Smith should declare that if he scores in the next game he is going to throw the ball into the Hocking!

To hit water, that would be an impressive throw! And let's hope the game is well out of hand before someone tries this, and incurrs the wrath of a 15yd penalty

I was there and witnessed the throw to McDonalds in person. Long, long day for the Bobcats. I think we only had like three first downs for the game.

Me too. The ball landed McDonalds parking lot. My buddies and I talk about it every time we play Marshall.

No joke, Marshall may have been the best team in the country that year.

I drove from Richmond to meet my father and his best friend for the game. We only managed one first down and 63 total yards. The poor offensive output put the defense in a nearly impossible position. I remember Moss's long TD reception and he had another gear late in the route to make the catch.

http://www.ohio.edu/ohiotoday/fall_winter97/across/marsha...

Possibly the best game Ohio played that year was actually a loss to Kansas State where Ohio controlled the clock and I believe had more total yards than Kansas State who finished the year ranked #10 with a record of 11-1.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1997_Kansas_State_Wildcats_f...

Kansas State won 23-20, but it took a Kansas State punt return for a TD and two Grammatica field goals of over 50 yards to secure the win for Kansas State.

I so vividly remember watching that KSU game. Still bugs me. The 97 team was so tough. Grobe's best.

I still hold that may have been our best team ever. They'd kick the behind of this year's team for sure.
