Both teams have had seasons that at best are shaky, but it's clear that one team was excited to get on the field and be physical, and one team would rather be on Christmas break.

Very solid effort. Our guys came ready to play. Nice effort on both side of the ball. Nice to have a healthy squad.
Ready for NIU.

The team looked a lot healthier, and you could clearly see that they have improved a lot over the course of the year. NIU looks beatable.

Buffalo almost beat BG @ BG so it was a little of them playing poorly and us improving. Its good to win a November MAC game by 20 points. Sets up that Blackout nice with a chance for a 6th win on the line. Not too many thought we'd see .500 again but here we are at 5-5 in November.

Congratulations to all involved. Run the ball, stop the run, win the game. Anyone hurt? The key is to continue to get healthier.

Ditto to all.

It was very nice for us to be dishing out a one sided score in November against a team that we have had our challenges against in the past. I realize they are not a top tier team but sometimes it's just good to get a win, regardless of the opponent.

I'll categorize the win as functional.

Buffalo was a team with a lot of quit in 'em. They reminded me of something I've seen before.

I mentioned to my partner-in-crime last night that Licata should run back to the 5, ground the ball, drop the microphone and walk to the bus. THEN HE DAMN NEAR DID IT!

NIU may be down, but I'm loathe to say last night translates into great confidence we'll beat them.

We played well. But that was not a good team which we beat. Didn't hurt to start four drives inside their 22.

Ohio played very well and looked as good as it has all season. Buffalo looked like a team that has mailed it in and is in total meltdown mode. Also, that guy trying to return kicks looked like he'd never done it before in his life. I know he's a freshman but wow.

I wouldn't say we were solid all around. Defense and Special Teams brought it tonight for sure. But the offense still left a lot of plays on the field that they should have done better on. Vick especially was not consistent on his throws, which would matter a lot more if we had played an actual good team last night. Was nice to have AJ back though, he really helps us be more balanced.

To me the passing was the one spot that wasn't up to where it needs to be. The rest was pretty much an all-around solid performance. As I said, the team has steadily made progress since Week 1, and now it's showing in the overall team performance.

My impressions are the same as Mr. Pete's. We deserve credit for executing a beatdown of a bad team, and I think we're getting better. But just as I felt beating Akron didn't necessarily mean we were going to escape Kzoo with a win, I don't think this win suddenly means everything is fixed and we're going to take down NIU. We can see that Buffalo is coming apart right now. They had no interest in hanging on to the football and the multiple short fields were something even our offense could score 30+ with.

That said... our D against the run was impressive, and we put up some impressive totals running the ball ourselves. A Healthy Ouellette is good. He's a punishing runner.

The bad:
two fumbles led directly to 14 points for Buffalo.
Vick did not look comfortable throwing the ball. I think we're lucky there weren't any picks, and we continue to have no short passing game to speak of. Man I miss TT's ability to connect on those corner endzone routes.

I agree about the passing, with a few notable exceptions Vick seemed a little rusty in the throwing department. There were passes during the game that were directed right near the sideline where my seats are that were overthrown. A good pass could have been completed as the receiver was open and Vick had a good angle to complete the pass. He simply put too much air under the ball and it sailed into the Buffalo bench. I noticed similar what appeared to be similar situations on other parts of the field, but I didn't have as good a look at those. I attributed this to rust, and I figure by NIU he'll have that arm a little better oiled.

On another subject, who was it the fumbled the ball in the 4th quarter that led to the "scoop and score" for UB? I never did get that guy's number.

What Pete and DFC said. It's hard to tell how bad Buffalo is, but they clearly didn't want to be there last night.

And I still hate having to settle for FGs inside the 10....

Tim Edmonds was responsible for the "drop-6". It was unfortunate for him, but I had a tough time getting upset by a junk-time fumble when the starters were all out*

*much much much easier for me to say side the game wasn't in doubt!

Agreed. One aspect of the passing game that surprised me: on two or three third-and-short situations, Ohio called for long, low-percentage passes -- both down field and to far sideline. Vick was long on all those throws, and they ended possessions.

But overall it was a pleasure to watch Ohio measure up, especially in the trenches.

I am just excited that we were the team beating up on the team that looked disinterested in November instead of the other way around. This make me feel that player were more to blame for the performances last year than coaching.

The receiver was open in those situations, and the one time a good throw would have went the distance. Execution, Execution, Execution...could make coaching look really good.

Maybe this is the year we finally see The Bobcats getting better and better in the last 4 weeks of the season vs what we've seen over the past few years.

I think this is a really good possibility given we have so many younger players. These guys are getting more and more confident and it seems to be showing.

My theory is that with the game pretty much out of reach, Coach Solich or Albin called those plays with the intent of knocking the rust off Vick's long-ball passing in game situations. Perhaps Ohio figures to have a more vertical passing game to end the season against NIU and Miami; since Vick's been out awhile, those plays were called just to "practice them" during actual game situations, the aim to get Vick acclimated to throwing the long ball again in conjunction with getting the timing down with his receivers.

It probably was a tough night for anyone to throw the ball. Buffalo's QB was awful. The passing numbers in the NIU-Ball State game were pretty terrible, and if you go back to the Tuesday night games, which also were rainy, those quarterbacks had below-average throwing stats. I think only two QBs out of eight completed more than 50 percent of their passes, and NIU's QB still only averaged 4.7 per pass, so obviously a lot of short throws.

The win last night should just about guarantee that the NIU game will be on ESPNU and went a long way toward putting the Fiami game on ESPN2. Unlike this week's and next week's games, only one MAC game on 11/18 & 11/25 will be on a prime ESPN channel (the U on 11/18 and the Deuce on 11/25). The other game scheduled each night would be on WatchESPN (and maybe ESPN3?). The 11/18 game between 8-2/7-3 NIU and 5-5 Ohio should get better viewership than a game between 3-7/2-8 UMass and 5-5/4-6 Akron. The 11/25 games (Ohio-Fiami & Akron-Kent) would be about even in national interest (i.e., little), so it'll probably come down to which game has the most affect on the bowl situation.
