Does it matter who suggests a good idea?

Is it wise to reject a good idea merely on the basis that the person who suggests it does not appear to be 'qualified.'

You know where I'm going with this. There's a solid contingent here which refuses to even conceive it's possible that this board could have insights which could help the program.

Is that really a wise or helpful approach?

[I get that the fallback position will be to deny that the suggestions are 'good ideas.']

If we lose on Saturday, you can expect a lot of "told you sos" from certain quarters. We might show additional progress and the young guys might play better, but if we lose you will hear how our offense isn't imaginative enough, how our coaching staff doesn't have a clue, how our recruits are really disguised DII rejects, how it's bad to have a well-developed walkon program, etc., etc., etc. You all know the drill. If we win, it'll be said that Akron is actually nothing more than a perennial MAC cellar dweller and the win is essentially meaningless. If we make a bowl this year, it'll be an everyone-wins-a-trophy-meaningless-consolation-putrid-who-gives-a-damn bowl. In another words, with these folks at this point in time there's actually no way we can win.

I really, really enjoy reading the arguments over which uninformed idea to improve our program is better. Really, I do. I'm sure that some of them are even worth pursuing to some degree or another. I just don't know which.

What I don't get is how, right now in the middle of the season, when the leaves are changing around Peden, and the 110 is inspiring throngs of the faithful, you can't simply enjoy the spectacle that is college football. Maybe we'll win and maybe we'll lose but we've won before and we've lost before, too. We lost a lot, in fact, and the Hocking did not flow backwards nor did the sky fall on Athens County.

So, as to the original question - meh.

What end of season OHIO win total would signal collapse to you Paul?

If OHIO ends the season with less than 4 wins has the program collapsed?

How about less than 5? 6? 7? 8?

Set your bar now, so your opinion can be judged fairly at the end of season.

My thesis is that both you and Monroe never intended to have your opinions on this years team formally judged. You two find the chase of your own tails far too enjoyable.

Afterall, neither you nor Monroe took a stab at predicting the record.

http://www.bobcatattack.com/messageboard/topic.asp?FromPa...

And to complicate your opinion on Monroe, Mr. Slavin went on record to state in the the linked thread in August:

So Paul let's not act like Monroe was predicting the 2008 financial crisis in 2006.

I'm relatively new to BA....I can tell just by reading down the posts that there are some back stories between some of the people on here...

I might be misunderstanding the premise of the question, but do you actually think that any of what is talked about here on BA has any relevance to a real life college football program???

I get it. I love to rant and rave on my teams as much as the next guy, but seriously, have any of you been through what these guys are going through? Do you guys have any knowledge of the grind of coaching college football?

We as fans get about 10% of what it is really going on down there. You stats guys can pump all the numbers that they want, and I love that. But to think that there are credible 'insights' in these posts....don't kid yourself. I would put money down to bet that Frank and his staff have never once read a single post on here. And why would they?

That said, GO Bobcats.

If someone actually has a suggestion, I'm sure there is a way to get to to the appropriate person, but I agree with Rufus. I would not expect to find the coaches reading BA. players shouldn't read it, either, but I'm sure that some do.

We know from my poll that there are a lot of different opinions here about what is wrong, and whether the problem is being fixed, or something else needs to be done. No amount of discussion is likely to change anyone's mind, so there doesn't seem to be any purpose served by the hostility that seems to be creeping into the discussion. Why don't we all just get along, and enjoy what's left of the season, as best we can. Who knows, maybe some good things will happen along the way?

Don't listen to us, rather....

What the OHIO Football coaches really need to do is have a conclave with Gross, JC and Saul to learn how to sell Athens to young super stars--there should be little reason not to have future All-MAC players that number 8-14 per season with all that is good going on in Bobcatville.

Absolutely. The new indoor facility along with the academic center are a HUGE addition to the program and will help sway recruits (as well as parents) to become Bobcats.

The ambiance at OHIO is second to none in the MAC. We are upgrading the campus and facilities (need a weight room upgrade next). The old 'if you build it, they will come'...if you will.
We have athletes at the next level. Mike Mitchell should be a bell cow example for the heights that can be reached through the program.

We do, however, need to find a way to get the MAC Title. Nothing bolsters recruiting better than a winning program....and by 'we' I mean Frank and the players.

Ok, well win total is only a small portion of what really matters. If we beat Idaho, Kent, Miami and EIU then we don't really know anything about this team or the future. Well, I guess we would have learned that we aren't one of the bottom 10-15 teams in the country. So that would be good news.

If we get to five wins that would mean we have a pulse. Its a bad season (yes, Bcat2 by both historical Ohio standards and Solich standards), but the sky isn't falling. However, I'd still be concerned about the program's future under Solich.

If we got to 6 wins, then I would reduce my complaining from "total collapse" back to "plateaued." I think my tone and mood regarding the program would improve quite a bit.

Seven or greater and I would recant everything and I would mail an apology letter to Bcat2.

What's missing from your question is the issue of "style points." The 2008 rebuilding Bobcats won only 4 games...but they played Ohio State, Northwestern and CMU tight and lost to Wyoming by a point on the road in the opener. For the most part, they were competitive and fun to watch. You also got the feeling watching them that they were a year or two away from a much better season.

This years team has none of that.

Hope that answers your questions!

The 2008 team is the same one in my mind I keep coming back to as well. I felt better about opening that year 0-4 than I do this year's opening at 2-2. And our best win in 2008 was probably over a 5-win Akron team.

But I don't know. I feel like this year's team still has a WTF??? win in it, and in 2008 I don't know that I felt that way down the stretch. Maybe it's this weekend over eventual division champ Akron. Maybe it's over NIU later on.

Then again, maybe I'm just in denial.
