Definitely think 6 wins will do it with all of the new bowls and tie-ins. But odds of getting to #6 just don't look that good.

Have to hope Buffalo and Miami are W's, NIU is most likely an L. We never win @WMU so Akron becomes a must win if we need to get to 6 wins. And i'm not convinced 6 wins gets us in.

At this point of the season it is hard to believe we will be accepted with a record any less than 7-8 victories.

Agree. We have no "marquee" win. We need to go 4-1 to finish out.

Not sure that's possible, quite honestly.

Akron will be tough...but a chance if Pohl doesn't play
WMU will be really tough...If Rawls gashed us, imagine what Franklin will do
Buffalo...that should be a win at home. They stink...but Licata is still good and could light up our secondary
NIU....have to believe by then they will have figured it out. Not a lot of faith
Miami....Hendrix is good...he could also light up our secondary

I'm hopeful that 4-1 is possible....
Realistically I think 2-3 is more likely

But sadly, I could see 0-5 or 1-4

Basically, I'll be stunned if we end up in a bowl

Yep, realistically we'll have to win four of the last five. The MAC has five tie-ins and five teams (BG, Akron, Toledo, CMU & NIU) have 4 or 5 wins, so they have to win less than half their remaining games to be bowl eligible. WMU at 3-3 has to win half its remaining games. That's six teams ahead of us. We play three of them, so there's opportunity. But there's little margin for error. I'm not optimistic.

People are giving Akron way to much respect. We can beat them. Let's not forget last's years game. Yes these are new teams but come on. People need to stop acting like Akron is going to kill us. Even with their QB we have a chance. W/O we're favorites. As for the rest Miami is a W. Buffalo will be close. If we can just pull off an upset with NIU or WMU we're bowling. It's not that far out of reach.

So this is what it has come down to, satisfaction with a "bowl" game? Whatever happened to the quest for a league championship?

Be careful asking that Alan. Our fan base believes the following truths: 1.) Who cares? Ohio is only a basketball school, so football is just used to socially pass the time until hoops starts. 2.) Don't you remember the 90's? We are in a much better place now and should be thrilled with coming close. 3.) Attending meaningless, fringe bowl games every year are better than winning an occasional MAC title.

I would say that Bowl games are a nice, tiered goal, where, in years when you don't win the MACC, you still have a secondary goal. Accomplishing at least that secondary goal is still a reward to the players for their hard work, and something that helps with recruiting. Some fans enjoy the trips as well.

If we presume that one of the primary reasons for having a football team at all is as a way of increasing name awareness and promoting the broader mission of the University, then Bowl games are an important goal for that purpose as well. When you are in a bowl game, you get numerous name mentions throughout the holiday season.

It "should" be in the picture every year, regardless of rebuilding or not.

It was, to a degree, in September. Hope springs eternal, and all that. But the reality of being two games down to BG in mid-October has set in.

When you consider that first tiebreaker is head to head, we're three down to BG. The East is a pipe dream. Just try to get better and win this weekend.

Agreed....

There is nothing wrong with expectations.
No one should ever apologize for realistic expectations.

That said....up until 2006 we had not gone to a bowl game in 38 years.
Now we have a select group on here that Pooh-Pooh every bowl appearance acting as if we are one step away from being an underachieving SEC Power.

A bowl game is a reward to the players and a helluva recruiting tool(along with MACtion) providing we represent.

A friend of mine has a son who plays for Illinois and you want to hear their goal for 2014???
Making a Bowl Game.

I want to see us win a MACC as well, and there were years previously in which I felt we left that sitting on the table....but I knew a MACC this year was not a very realistic expectation.

And the reason he wants to make a bowl game is because if you play for Illinois, that's all you have to play for. At OU, we should be playing for championships like we do in basketball and volleyball. When you play for championships, post season opportunities take care of themselves.

I don't disagree with what you say, but setting low expectations is never a good way to start out a season either. The MAC isn't the SEC, so a conference championship goal is not unrealistic to have every single year. Jesus, who would have thought Miami or Buffalo or Akron or Kent State would have made it to the MAC title game recently? But they did it. This conference is always one of the hardest to pick a winner.

That's why I originally thought this team had a shot at it: (1) All the pressure was off. (2) No more drama from the year before. (3) A stout defense, albeit not the best we've seen out of Ohio. (4) I had hopes the offense would change (we know it hasn't).

Considering that Ohio's winning percentage in MAC games over the last ten years in Basketball and football are identical (99-58, 59.2% versus 45-31 59.2%), I presume this was sarcasm, making fun of the sense of entitlement held by fans of another school up north, that think they are entitled to win the B1G every year?

In fairness, only one of the serious preseason pickers, out of 22, had Ohio in the MACC game. Everyone thought that BG was a shoo-in, and they may still be.

In terms of expectations, I had an interesting conversation with Frank several years ago before the start of a season. The long and short of it is that Frank said he goes into every season with the goal of being undefeated, it doesn't matter how young or inexperienced the team is or what its talent level might be, he tries to coach each game in a way that makes a win possible. His game plans are all about winning, not about being respectable, or some other lesser goal. So, I can confidently say, that at this point in the season Frank is burning the midnight oil trying to figure out a way to win out. GO OHIO!

No sarcasm at all - in basketball we've won three championships in the last 10 years and in volleyball, well, we're running out of banner space.

When was the last regular season championship, Alan?

Hint: our kids were still in the Athens City school system.

Basketball has two shots at an MAC Title each season. How many has OHIO won that represents the night in and night out grind?

Until recently there have been no MAC regular season champs - there were divisional champs. There is however a tournament winner and the number for that would be 3.
