On the last drive in last weeks game Greg made some very impressive throws and looked like he was moving the offense with confidence until a bad snap turned into a disaster of a play ending with a lost fumble in the redzone. With that being said I think that this kid deserves his fair shot at running the team with Vick still out with his knee injury, he has shown growth and maturity bouncing back from his incident last year with Fisher (wish he was still with us). with Sprague second to last in the conference in terms of QBR and throwing just one touchdown in 5 games what do we have to lose?

Keep in mind BG was giving him everything underneath at that point in the game. BG was essentially letting us play pitch and catch while eating up some time at that point. The game was over when he came in.

When we are down 3 touchdowns in the 4th quarter what is the harm of letting him play more than the last few series?
This is his third year in our program and he is presently our back-up QB. IMO he needs to knock off some rust in game situations.

While that's true, Windham did look like he's a better passer than Sprague, though a worse runner and ballhandler. In the end, I trust the coaches to evaluate which QB gives Ohio the best chance of winning.

Next time we're down three TDs in the 4th by all means let him play. But he's not ready to start. He came in Saturday in garbage time when BG was giving us all the short stuff to keep the clock running. He moved the ball and killed some clock but no points. At Kentucky he was 1-1 for 6 yds, then fumbled trying to pass (granted, it was raining). Vs EIU he had two drives late: a 3 & out and 10 plays for 43 yds and no score. If we start Windham, we're basically going back four games when Sprague made his first start. But we're not playing EIU; we're playing an improving Akron team.

What's been happening the last couple games isn't just Sprague. He didn't get flagged for 16 penalties. He didn't come up short on 4th and 2 despite having a hole that would get a first down. He didn't get beat on a 61-yd pass play that led to their last TD. I don't think putting Windham in as starter at this point would solve much.

the problem isn't that our 3rd string QB lacks playing experience, the problem is that our 1st and 2nd string QBs lack playing experience too. JD needs every snap he can get regardless of what's on the scoreboard.

Amazing how "great" Sprague is all of a sudden. He didn't even complete 50% of his passes. What did he do against CMU and how many points did we score. I don't really care what he did against Idaho which is 0-6 or E. I'llinois which is 1-5. All I saw was a guy throwing jump balls for anyone within 5 yards of his deep balls or a guy overthrowing open receivers on the sideline. If he is our QB of the future our future is not good so if Windham is is so bad why is he on the team. If we're going to lose and build for next year lets see what the kid has and move him to another position if he doesn't have it.

As Lou Holts often says, if you keep doing things the same way how can you expect different results. And yes I do personally know Lou Holtz, played golf with him at Augusta National and attended many charity events with him.

Some thoughts:

1) Obviously, Windham is the better thrower but Sprague is a better runner and game manager (at least for now). I don't know how long Windham was gone from the team so it makes sense he is a little rusty with the offense.

2) Windham seems very uncomfortable with the read option, and perhaps the option in all its forms. He seems to struggle making a quick decision.

2a) So imagine my surprise when we have the ball at the BG one yard line and we have an opportunity to give our young guys some confidence with a score and Mr. Albin decides to run the read option from the 1 yard line.

2b) Who the hell runs the read option from the 1 yard line?

2c) In the limited time I've seen Windham play I know he can't get that play right...and yet there it is. From the 1 yard line of all places.

2d) Windham is a pro-style QB. If he's going to play we need to adapt the play calling to his strengths. I realize this is a novel idea and would require some extra effort and intelligence on the part of the staff. But I think we can pull it off.

3) New topic. Why did Vick get such a short leash and yet Sprague can take a massive dump all over the CMU game but we never see Windham? And last week we can't get any points on the board but again, no change. The drop from Sprague to Windham is not very much (if anything). Pulling Vick out of games still is really confusing to me...particularly given how unimpressive Sprague is.

Anyway, I'd like to see more Windham than we have. At least we'll know what he's capable of.

It's not that Sprague is all that great. But Windham hasn't shown that he's any better. His completion percentage is better, but he's thrown few passes in mostly garbage time, while Sprague has faced the other teams' 1st and 2nd stringers. He's averaging 8 yds a completion to Sprague's 12. He's also lost two fumbles in his limited action. In all likelihood, the coaches are seeing much the same thing in practice.

And I'm glad you personally know Holtz. He and Mark May are about the two biggest bores on TV.

Except when Holtz is predicting correctly that we'd beat Penn State. Or, when May was giving us all that luv before and after we beat Michigan and when we made the Sweet 16. Then they seemed astute and great fountains of sports knowledge.

No. They were still the biggest bores on TV. They were just more likeable.

Guess you have higher standards than I do. ;-)
