College Football Fandom by Zip Code

Cool map using likes on Facebook to show the top 3 teams liked by zip code. At first you want to get upset when you see 45701 has 55% OSU and 22% Ohio...until you look at other MAC schools areas and how they fare.

Interesting. Not sure of the exact methodology. If it's fans that just like the "football" page of athletic department's it seems flawed. The main Ohio Athletics page has tons of likes, but the football page is much smaller when I looked it up. Living in Athens County, I don't think it does a good job of depicting reality...

Very interesting. Only one MAC team dominates their regional area, NIU (plus U.Mass, if you want to count them as MAC). Some MAC schools, like EMU and Miami, I can't even find in the top three at all in any county. A non-MAC school I can't seem to find in the top 3 in any county anywhere on the map, either, is Cincinnati.

Ohio doesn't dominate any county, but I am extremely impressed with their showing on this map. They are #2 across a very wide number of counties in SE Ohio, which I believe is exactly the goal at the current time. No other MAC school has appeal across such a broad area. I may have missed a few counties, but check out the very large list of counties where Ohio is in the top 3.

Marshall's poor showing surprised me, growing up in Charleston my perception was that it was roughly 50/50 in Charleston and southwest of there, but this study doesn't bear this out. That was during Marshall's absolute peak and a few down years for the Mountaineers, though, and my personal teenage observations aren't exactly scientific.

I always like looking at these kind of maps. I loved last year seeing the NFL version where the Browns had an outpost in Athens County surrounded by Steelers. Interestingly, the Browns actually gained a couple counties this year... The writer speculated it was the "Johnny Effect."

This one is somewhat incomplete. They didn't even include Cincinnati... UC would certainly beat the Buckeyes in a couple SWO zip codes.

I noticed that, too, Alan. Akron has fairly widespread support in NE Ohio, though not as wide as Ohio's support is in the SE. Toledo is fairly strong in the NW as well.

An interesting question will be whether, now that Ohio is recruiting almost all it's players from in-state, whether we start seeing pockets of support even further away. For example, will there be a pocket of support that appears north of Dayton, say, in the vicinity of Covington?

If I read correctly that the survey is based on Facebook preferences, resident campus schools like Ohio and Miami are at significant disadvantage as their fans are spread out far and wide. As for Akron; well, nobody leaves.

The fact that we have a presence among the residents of Southeast Ohio while Miami has absolutely no showing is indicative of Ohio's efforts and Miami's abject failure.

For Cincinnati to have no showing in a single Cincinnati zip code is crushing.

Not really. As The Optimist pointed out, the map doesn't include the actual city zipcodes, probably becasue they are too small to show up on a map this size. It probably means that UC has most of it's appeal within the actual city.

Or it may be a sign that the appeal of popped collars is confined to the campus area.

Alternately, maybe we're both just saying the same thing, something that can more concisely be expressed as "Miami sucks".

One thing I see is even in states that have 2 power conference schools the major football school dominates the state while the secondary power conference school only has a pocket of support 40-50 miles wide. This is true even in a state like Kansas where KU has a weak football program Kansas St. isn't that supported state wide as you would expect from their support numbers. The key for the MAC programs in Ohio looks like taking support not from Ohio St but from people who don't like Ohio St and are following Michigan or Notre Dame that could see a MAC program as an alternative. Ohio needs to work on its following in West Virginia if it can.

Cincinnati's absence says they have a very localized fanbase. Interest in UC is not that much higher than what you see at the games. Their fans have an easy time of getting to the games with them all right there.

Where there are more fans of NIU than any other school in its zip code, it's still far from a majority at 25%, just more than Ohio's 22%. It's just that in that area, there is mixed support for various schools (Notre Dame, Illinois, Wisconsin, Northwestern, even Michigan).

If I recall they base this facebook thing on FB profiles that have liked a schools' FB page or something like that. So not entirely accurate, plus you'll have some people that like more than one.

The perception of UC could be related to the perception of the actual city of Cincinnati itself. For people who have never been here, they still like to refer to it as the Nasty Nati or relate race issues to it. And I think most people touched on it, but UC's fan base is clearly Cincinnati centered. Even on the outskirts of 275 is when people start cheering IU, OSU or UK. Ok maybe not IU football.

I'm in agreement. For O$U to lead the poll in Cincy ZIP codes isn't surprising. For them to not be included in Cincy and N.KY in any way AT ALL instead of Notre Dame or Michigan tells me this isn't legit, a mistake was made, or it's run by Ohio $tate grads.

I also find the idea that the Florida Gators are the third most popular team anywhere in Central Ohio to be tough to believe.

Yeah, I am thinking UC had to have been an oversight. Which is odd, because seemingly every other D1 team has a clear impact in their area. Maybe they spelled Cincinnati wrong...it is tricky.
