So far MAC avgs are:

Ohio 24,119
Buffs 21,756
Toledo 19,924
CMU 19,849
BGSU 19,738

Seems Ohio fans are buying in more than anywhere else in the MAC. Given this, those posters still unhappy are bucking the trend.

Should be slightly above the average this week, but the last three games, and especially the last two on weeknights, will bring the average way down.

UpSan. Will this reflect actual attendance or do tickets sold count even if the buyer does not attend. Wonder if there are still tickets for kids available?

The other MAC teams will drop, too, once the mid-week games start.

When they start giving trophies for attendance then this might matter.

Was told the Akron game will be an "approaching sellout" level crowd. Apparently a lot of youth football groups involved. I know my neighbor's son is excited to play in the fieldhouse pregame.

Can anyone else see that there is a whole lot more than the next MACC?

I think a number of community leaders may disagree with your statement.

I guess it depends what the "goal" is. Is winning the only goal? Is the goal also to promote the University? To increase ties to Alumni? To build ties with the community? To generate commerce for the businesses of Athens? If any of the last four are goals, or part of the goal, then Attendance matters for reasons of its own.

A classic example of when a idea is completely meaningless in this context. Way to go Swank!

And, what do you think would happen IF the Bobcats were to go 4-8 this year?

Cats will not go 4-8 this year. And this team is ready to have two trememdous years coming up.

Its time. Is it possible to pay for a second deck to the student section with student fees? Students are averaging 6,000 a game but for the bigger games I bet are more in the 8,000 range. The hill was designed to take in crowds when they surged over 20,000 and up until a few years ago that was rare. What was the last Saturday crowd without 20,000 in the stands? Louisiana on Halloween weekend in 2010 probably.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

24k vs 22k or 20k is very good when one takes into consideration population centers of mass relative to geographic locale of venue.

35K is a 50% increase in capacity, I don't think that could be achieved by expanding on the current structure and I don't see how we can have a real discussion right now about building a brand new stadium.

But, if we can have a discussion about a dream of a new stadium I will say that I too dream of a 35K stadium where the corner pieces connect seamlessly into the sides and the academic center, with a nice new tower on the West side, a much larger jumbotron on top of victory hill, and the necessary riggings to install one of those sky-cams on a wire that runs from endzone to endzone.

I bet they eventually do build a new stadium where Peden now stands, but it won't be for football. I think the next stadium will be for soccer. But perhaps I should save that thread for another day in another thread.

Some of you are very "in the moment" thinkers.

Expanding Peden is not about attendance today or a week ago. Expanding Peden is about building a program that isn't just "Athens University" but rather "OHIO University." It is about winning moving forward. It is about recruiting

The fact is, GOOD players want to play at schools where there is a great atmosphere and commited fans. A lot of people have bought into the idea that Ohio can be OHIO and not just some random MAC school.

Struggles any given year are rough and are not fun, but building facilities is not about one given year. It is about a building a sustainable PROGRAM not just one team.

Our hoops is there. We have it. Football has always been the reason we could not join the bigger conference. Expanding Peden is what has to happen to make that jump. I realize some do not want us to make the jump to a "big-time" program for a variety of reasons. Some of those concerns ARE legitimate but lets stop pretending that expanding Peden is not about jumping to a higher level. That is the only issue here.

I've seen crazier things happen.

You also have to be invited, and these days that's as much a function of the TV market as it is the stadium size. ECU has a 50,000-seat stadium (third largest in NC) and a program that traditionally has been a winner and a giant killer. But when the reshuffling of big conference alignments came about, no one came calling, largely because ECU is in the 103rd TV market and schools in larger markets were available. Sure, they moved from CUSA to the American Conference, but it's mostly populated with old CUSA schools, so they're basically where they were. Yes, expand Peden if the economics are there. But don't expect the expansion to lead to a bigger conference, even with a winning program.

I saw a picture on my my Twitter and "approaching 4,000" seems to be more accurate.

Overall those seem like solid numbers from the MAC attendance leaders, which is good to see. Our average still exceeds our capacity, so that's always a plus (considering we'll be lucky to finish .500).

These figures bear witness as to how delusional are the aspirations of.this conference to be "big time."

Northern Illinois is a perennial power. They were in the Orange Bowl a couple of yeas ago. But look where they rank in the.conference in attendance.

Central Michigan has been a solid, winning program for years now. Yet they drew less than 19,000 paid on a good weather day for its homecoming game vs. Ohio. And abt half their fans were more interested in tailgating than attending the.game...stadium was never more than.half full.

The MAC is 100% big time college football from time to time. We saw that in 2012, for example in addition to individual talents. It's a great football conference.

Do I think that attendance is a good way to judge whether or not the MAC is a big time conference? No. Mostly because the people who grow up in Ohio and Michigan are too brainwashed to root for the bigger programs instead of supporting their alma mater.
