On the positive side:

Offense had 500+ yards. Windham threw some on-target balls on the last drive.
The only other defense to hold BG to less than we did, so far this season, was Wisconsin.

On the negative side:

The total inability to run the football and finish drives was disappointing. So were the penalties (sloppy game on both sides). So was the D getting burned on BG's first two possessions.

We are young. We are getting better. Hang in there. It's a sad day in Bobcatville. But the sky is not falling. Go OHIO!

We're not even putting up a fight in these games when it comes to the scoreboard. It would be easier to swallow if we were still in the game late in the 4th quarter. If we drop behind by 14 points it's pretty much a given that we're toast.

I'm sorry but to score one touchdown against a maligned defense at home, to a large homecoming crowd is unacceptable.

While they didn't win, I thought the Bobcats did an awful lot of good things today, and a few bad things. I was only able to watch parts of the game, but plan to watch the replay, but I expect it to confirm my initial impressions.

What I did see was that the Bobcats have improved a lot from the first week, and I think they grew a lot today. They certainly played hard, even though they were down early, they never gave up, ever. With the exception of the first 3 minutes, I thought Ohio played well.

So far my preseason picks have been perfect (unfortunately). It was here where I picked an inflection point, with the Bobcats winning out. As many good things as they did today, and as much as they have improved from week 1, I see no reason they can't do that.

Go Bobcats.

Our offense sucks and the team is undisciplined. We will be lucky to win 1 game from here out. If we do better, let me know. This spotting the other team 14 or more points and expecting to win a ball game goes against all logic.

Frankly, we are not good enough in any offensive or defensive category that makes me feel good about the upcoming games.

I don't think we win again this year especially with Sprague at QB. 3-9 sounds about right.

This year DOES suck.

This game was very different from the CMU game. Down 14-3 at CMU it felt like were down 140-3 as inept as we were playing but today it felt like if we could just get out of our own way and stop making stupid mistakes we could win. Unfortunately, we couldn't get out of our own way.

We may lose every game left on the schedule, or we might just win them all. The entire conference is weird and funky this year.

Please re-read your post and re-consider your analysis. Because it could be well-argued that CMU and today were just two sides of the same coin.

Now, it's about a 27 game stretch where we've hardly played any good ball against the most mediocre of teams. How many games of this does it take before maybe it should be acknowledged that there are significant problems here.

I agree there were some positives out there. Penalties were bad today and the inability to get 7 on any of the first 3 deep drives was bothersome. Otherwise there were some decent things going on.

And for all the naysayers .. who have we lost to? Marshall stands 6-0, Kentucky is 5-1, BG is 5-2 and CMU is 4-3 and put up over 550 yards on NIU today.

I re-read my post and I reconsidered my analysis. And I agree with what I said 100%. Thanks for the suggestion though.

my point is valid- last week the offense was total incapable of making plays or sustaining drives, this week they were able to make plays but couldn't stop making stupid penalties and didn't execute well enough to finish in the endzone.

Last week's 187 yards on 44 plays with a TOP of 17:41 compared to this week's 513 yards on 110 plays with a TOP of 39:21 supports my original statement. It doesn't mean I'm satisfied with the loss or think our troubles are over. But it also means that I don't think this season is completely lost yet either.

I have seen some games on the tube but today was the first game i could make in person. My thoughts:

First, this team and staff were not prepared, period. If you are ready to play you don't give up 14 points the first three minutes. Our scouting of BG sucked and our players were not mentally ready to deal with their hurry up. Then we fumble on our first possession. Game essentially over.

Second, today this team was undisciplined. Sure they had 500+ yards but penalties and inability to finish ruined our chances.

Third, why did we run a reverse with first and ten at the 21 in the second quarter when down 14-3 or 14-6? We were moving the ball and got cute. Should have pounded it and/or thrown it instead.

Fourth, we didn't quit and i thought we might after going down by 14. Still, we were really never able to recover. It was an easy win for BG.

Fifth, I think this staff built a program the first three years. Got it as high as they could the next three. And now, well the last 26 games tell the story. Stability was a blessing and is now a curse. I think the staff is done.

Windham put some zing on the ball the last drive then we fumble! Think about it, we make the missed FG, don't interfere on the pick 6 and score the last drive...why we would have been in the game. Yeah, right!

I was afraid this would be a 4-8 year and my worst fears have come to fruition. I had hoped i was wrong.

In closing, I said it before and I'll say it again we won't score 17 points in a game the rest of the year. This is beginning to look like a year with all those Lichty 35-17 scores back in the day. And, i did love the Homecoming crowd. Too bad the team gave us nothing to cheer about. I'm sure we lost a lot of future fans after the performance today.

At this point it's up to the players to make a statement by winning some games. Akron, WMU, and Miami are all improved over last year, so it won't be easy, but I think Ohio is improved enough to win some games.

West coast is the best coast.

That said, this team hasn't blatantly showed that they're primed for an immediate improvement. Do I think they can make some noise in the East? Yeah, sure. Although today's overall product was real bad, there are still guys at WR and OL playing well. Add a healthier Ouellette and Vick (in a few weeks) into the mix... and then the offense looks twice as good.

This roster still has some immediate potential, IMO. Although I'm not optimistic about the rest of the season, it can (and probably will) get better.

It's always fun when Monroe flips from relentless optimism to relentless pessimism. He manages to call out everyone along the way.

Pulled this data to see if my perception was reality that we are not starting well on either side of the ball and end up playing from behind too much. Here's the drive summary of the first 2 possessions of the 1st quarter by our opponents-

0yds Punt
75yds TD
75yds TD
80yds TD
61yds FG
74yds TD
-5yds Punt
3yds Punt
65yds FG
19yds Punt
77yds TD
68yds TD
75yds TD
37yds TD

14 drives = 8 TDs, 2-2 FGs, 4 punts (3 three and outs), 0 turnovers, 62pts.

And here is how our offense has performed in the first 2 possessions of the first quarter so far-

7yds Punt
87yds TD
5yds Punt
8yds Punt
84yds FG Missed
11yds Punt
13yds Fumble
79yds TD
78yds TD
53yds TD
3yds Punt
5yds Punt
14yds Fumble
21yds Punt

14 drives = 4 TDS, 0-1 FGs, 7 punts (5 three and outs), 2 TOs, 28pts.

We don't suck but we definitely aren't good at the beginning of games. This has to change, we just don't have the firepower to play from behind and catch up.
