I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.

Every headline I'm reading today pushes a story that penalties were Ohio's undoing in this game. I don't think that's true. But I think they say a lot about what is wrong with our team.

There are a couple penalties that set Bowling Green up in closer proximity to the end zone. A facemask put them at the 8 on a touchdown drive, a personal foul made a field goal closer. Neither one was a difference maker. No defensive penalties came on a critical down to extend a drive.

Only one offensive penalty could be considered a drive killer, an illegal block that led to a field goal. Ohio took 25 yards of penalties on their touchdown drive.

In a game that saw 30 possessions, I don't consider that significant.

What I do find in the list of penalties is a disturbing lack of preparation for what the BG offense would present, with an illegal substitution on their very first drive. A lack of preparation on offense with 4 procedure/substitution penalties; all in the first half and 2 of them back-to-back.

What I do find in the list of penalties is a disturbing lack of poise and self-control, with 3 15-yarders after the play and an ejection.

I don't care if it was a flag happy MAC ref yesterday who also spent time flagging the sidelines and the band. It was an embarrassment.

All the preseason talk about the lessons learned from 2013 is just talk. That Navy Seal presentation doesn't mean diddly if it isn't carried to the field. Seven games into 2014, it's time to figure out who's talking and who's doing and do something about it.
