Now that Scott Isphording has been brought on board as co-offensive coordinator, I have seen absolutely no difference in the predictable play calling, nor any other aspect of the offense. Just putting this out there: has anyone?

I believe Isphording is doing a better job as a QB coach than his predecessor. And I think the title of co-coordinator is business card only.

I'm frustrated by the limited playbook given the toss-up that the QB competition was portrayed to be.

I think Ipshording's greatest impact actually came through his work as recruiting coordinator for our 2010 class, which has been described by AD insiders as "almost a total miss." We're reaping that harvest this year. Why we would bring him back is beyond me.

I think we're seeing some differences in the offense, but I never expected a huge change. I would expect him to tinker with the pass patterns, and the passing reads, mostly, and maybe shift the play calling tendencies in certain circumstances. Play-calling is vastly overrated in judging offensive success/failure anyway. Unlike video games where play calling is the only variable it's more about execution and scheme, and the actual play that is called is only what is run maybe 60% of the time, with the rest being changed at the line depending on how the defense lines up.

I think what we've seen is that when Ohio is up against teams that can penetrate against Ohio's young defensive line, the offense doesn't work well at all, and when the offensive line is able to drive the defense back, the offense works reasonably well. Kentucky and CMU in particular had strong defensive fronts, and against those two teams the offense looked miserable.

For me, the remainder of the year, I find myself asking, who on the schedule has a defensive line capable of blowing up our offense? I don't know the answer to that. I just hope the guys up front keep learning, and improving, and that as a result things get better as the year goes on. I expect a much bigger gain year over year, though, after those guys get an off-season in the weight room (and when Wood comes back, and Gibbons is fully recovered).

How does lining up a single back who's light in weight in the pistol 8 yards behind the line of scrimmage when we're at the two foot line help?

Let me re-phrase: Please find me one respected football mind what thinks that is a good way to go.

Does any other team do that?

It's time for this team to go Patriot. Get back to basic football. Put a lead blocker in and commit to running the ball. Then get the ball out of JD's hands with a three step or less drop.

Oh, I forgot, we are playing a lot of O-line with 3 frosh. What successful major college football team does that/is in that predicament? O-line is a place for Jr, Sr and 5 yr Sr players who are mature and physical. Nothing will happen offensively until this line gets a whole lot better. I don't see that happening this year or next unless we bring in a bunch of JC guys on the line.

As a more serious suggestion, I wouldn't mind seeing more option. I only recall seeing it a couple times against CMU, and one of those it worked quite well.

Which...play-calling...makes one wonder why it wasn't called more, as I already mentioned.
