Does anyone have any insider knowledge of that situation?

I don't remember much chatter when he left, because most of us assumed he just wanted to move closer to home, and we got Bangura back. So the whole situation we collectively just closed the book and moved on.

Presumably, he wanted to be closer to home and that's how he ended up at Tulsa - but then... that situation changed swiftly? Tulsa's starter is a 6th year senior - so maybe he thought he should be the starter and didn't want to wait?

He left after a few months - and ended up on one the worst teams in FBS, to be a back-up to another sophomore. Has now been relegated to 3rd team, behind a freshman, and has 5 carries in the last two games.

Is it just a case of him thinking he should be given RB1 in every situation, and jumping when it doesn't happen?

I'm guessing he felt slighted by OU bringing back Sieh, and maybe that's why he didn't boomerang back after the Tulsa fallout, but OU is still a better situation than what he's currently facing. I can't see Brian or Scott telling him his spot was no longer available. Brune is fine, and we brought in some really nice recruits, but one would have to imagine he was in line to be the full-time starter as a JR - and he would have plenty of carries this season.

I still think it would be great for him to return and battle with Brune/Taylor, but something must've soured his taste. Maybe it's just the fact we asked him to work for it.

I could see why he might think he was RB1 after his great bowl game performance, but then we bring in Tyus. Which we absolutely should have done... any chance to strengthen a poistion group even when you have an "incumbent" you have to take it. IIRC Hunt started the game at Syracuse. Then Tyus got his shot in that game and performed even better. So maybe he sees Bangura return and believes it's more of the same.

I have no idea what actually transpired between him and the coaches, but the way he's been bouncing around since suggests he might have some maturing to do. We've all been there and done that in our youths.

He clearly went the wrong way on 3 or 4 different plays, like a screen bas where he was on the opposite side of the field as the offensive line and where Navarro expected him to be, in the early middle of the season last year. He didn't much playing time in the next few games after that. I suspect that he was in the dog house. I'd consider that he didn't care for that.

Agreed. I also have no idea what transpired...but the year and a half since the "Miracle in Myrtle" for Hunt and the Bobcats has proven Albin right for bringing in Tyus last year and proven Smith right for bringing back Bangura this fall. Hunt had a good game versus Georgia Southern and that may be it.

Hunt was the third or fourth RB in 2023 and and only started in the Myrtle Bowl because Sieh and O'Shaan had already jumped ship for the portal before the bowl game. If Hunt was better than Tyus he would've played for us last year. Instead he got beat out for playing time by a freshman and a transfer...and then the same thing happened at Tulsa/Temple. Kind of funny looking back now that he was the guy on our 2024 posters and media stuff when that roster had so many other great players we just didn't know about yet! Sometimes the guy who had five TDs in the last game isn't the best player on the roster!

The only information I had was Ricky didn't really bond with the team last season. He spent a lot of time eating by himself and such. I heard he was a great kid, introverted, and searching for things maybe beyond the gridiron.

My guess is that he is a football player looking for a chance to play football.

A little weird to me how willing people are to assume they know about his maturity level based on that.

0 carries for MTSU in a loss to Missouri State on Wednesday.

An all-around bummer.

At least he's still in school, but I really hate what the portal has done to G5 / mid-tier talent. It's too easy to move, so no one gives it a 2nd thought. And it matters even less to coaches / gm's these days, because they'll fill your slot immediately, or bring in competition the same month. Then you find yourself in a worse position than when you started because you had people in your ear saying look at the one elite game you played - go get your bag!

In 2025, 4,179 entered the portal. 2,809 found a new home. 33% now watch football from home. Just a bummer man.

Tbh I was rooting for Rickey to get it together last season and help Tyus and co. out with the running game. Obviously, that didn't happen.

If Hunt hits the portal again this upcoming offseason, would we be okay taking him back to Athens? Or has that ship sailed?

I'd love to get him back, but the ship might have sailed on both sides. He's gonna have to come back and fight with a couple dudes, and I think Taylor is probably the best of em. Irving Brown is also redshirting this season.

More the merrier as far as I'm concerned, but I think there is an underlying reason (too many guys in the room perhaps) he didn't swing back after what happened at Tulsa (they brought in another portal rb in addition to him). Even if he was just kind of embarrassed to run back so quickly, not sure if he wants to end up back here in a fight, but Brian was his RB coach back then, and then again he was the OC, and Scott was the OC for a bit as well - so I'm sure there's still a good relationship there.

I just never want to see someone leave here, especially someone we could use, and it seemingly not be a good football move.
