ESPN showed a graphic tonight listing the winningest coaches in MAC history-

1. 110 Herb Deromedi, CMU, 1978-93 (16 seasons, 6.875 wins/season)
2. 108 Bill Hess, Ohio, 1958-77 (20 seasons, 5.4 wins/season)
3. 79 Bob Pruett, Marshall 1997-03 (7 seasons, 11.3 wins/season)
4. 77 Doyt Perry, BGSU, 1955-64 (10 seasons, 7.7 wins/season)
5. 73 Gary Pinkel, Toledo, 1991-00 (10 seasons, 7.3 wins/season)
6. 66 Frank Solich, Ohio, 2005-13 (9 seasons, 7.3 wins/season)

If Frank stays on his current pace here is what his win totals will look like over the next 6 seasons-

2014- 73.3 wins, 5th place
2015- 80.7 wins, 3rd place
2016- 88.0 wins, 3rd place
2017- 95.3 wins, 3rd place
2018- 102.7 wins, 3rd place
2019- 110 wins T-1st place

Frank needs 45 wins to reach 1st place, here's how many wins he needs to average/season starting in 2014 to break the record by-

2014- N/A
2015- N/A
2016- N/A
2017- 11.25 wins/season
2018- 9 wins/season
2019- 7.5 wins/season
2020- 6.4 wins/season

- can he keep up his current pace?
- will he stay long enough to become #1?
- is this something that would be important to Frank?
- where do you think he'll end up?

It's hard to know what is important to Frank, but this is something I would think is not important to him. I rather think he is focused on team achievements than personal ones. As for when he will retire, I think it will be after he accomplishes whatever his personal goal is, or when he decides he isn't likely to accomplish it.

He'd have a decent chance at the record if he would get a new OC and put Bass off the field.

Even if he did match his win average, I don't see him coaching another six years. And on top of that, when has a coach coaching into his seventies not seen a tail off in production? It happened to Bowden and to the ped enabler. Realistically, I think he would need 8-9 years to make it happen, which would put him at 78 or 79 the year he broke the mark. Do we really want some zombie coach like JoePed sitting in the press box with no headphones on just so he can break some record?

As far as I see it Frank seems like he could easily coach another decade. He could probably get the record by the time he is seventy-six.

Heck, maybe after he wins the MAC Title and beats Nebraska in a bowl game he will be content to conclude his sunset years fly fishing in Wyoming.

If frank continues to coach he should reach it. He looks to be in really good shape for his age. I thought I heard he's 70. Is that right? And wasn't marshall in the Mac through the 2004 season? Not sure if that changes their win total or not.

We finally agree on something. He's coached 16 years at the FBS level (6 Nebraska, 10 Ohio). He's under contract until June of 2017 so that is another 2 seasons. He could decide on making it 20 years as HC at the FBS level, through completion of the academic center and a couple more cracks at a MAC Championship.

If Frank can get to #3 on that list it will be a big accomplishment. He's about 2 years away from that on his current pace and 2 more years under contract.

Hard to believe we can be having this discussion when it seems every year certain fans are calling for the firing of coach and his staff.

How old is he again? What is the wife, children, and grandchildren situation? This often steers the retirement decision more than anything else.

Frank's life is football. The team is his family. I don't see him retiring at end of his current contract, unless he develops some health issues at that point. He's more of a Bill Snyder type than a JoPa type. He'll know when it's time to hang it up. If Jim Schaus would leave within the next five years, I could see Frank taking the AD position in some very special circumstances, but I don't think that's very likely. He's a "hand's on" type of football coach and likes direct interaction with players.

Yep, I agree with this. Plus, he's not a self-absorbed megalomaniac like Joeped. I think he has way too much self-respect and pride to pull that kind of farce so his name can be attached to a record.

For comparison, here's the number of Conference Championships won by each of the top 6 coaches-

1. 3 Herb Deromedi, CMU, 1978-93 ('79, '80, '90)
2. 3 Bill Hess, Ohio, 1958-77 ('60, '63, '68)
3. 5 Bob Pruett, Marshall 1997-03 ('97, '98, '99, '00, '02)
4. 5 Doyt Perry, BGSU, 1955-64 ('56, '59, '61, '62, '64)
5. 1 Gary Pinkel, Toledo, 1991-00 ('95)
6. 0 Frank Solich, Ohio, 2005-13

Hmmm...Didn't Ohio win a 4th MACC under Hess?

Ohio's first championship was in 1953 under Carrol Widdoes ('50-'57), the other 3 were under Hess.

So Hess didn't win a 4th or a share of a 4th in either '67? I thought - perhaps incorrectly - that Cleve led Ohio to two titles.
