Does a nice job. For those who can afford it, Athens Messenger is something like $6.99 per month on line. If you appreciate his work, I am sure they can use your financial support.

I found this from today very interesting:

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — One of the real downsides of the push in recent years for sports information departments to also act as PR firms for the schools they work for is the disappearance of information.

Tasked not so much with providing information as opposed to shaping public opinion, today’s SID often simply doesn’t have the information available — especially if that information in any way does not adhere to promoting a positive image of the school or program they work for.

I was reminded this again after Ohio’s loss at Marshall on Saturday. The Thundering Herd racked up 705 yards of total offense.

Is that the most the Bobcats have ever given up in a single game? No idea. I scanned the Ohio media guide, game notes and website and couldn’t find any kind of list of single-game records for yardage allowed.

It could be. The two ‘worst’ days in terms of yards allowed that I could remember, before Saturday, were Ohio’s loss to Troy in the 2010 New Orleans Bowl (602 yards allowed) and in the 2013 season opener at Louisville (615).

Whether the 705 is a program record or not probably matters very little to the Bobcats. Whatever statistical notes accompany Saturday’s game, the game film will tell Ohio what it already knew — all the good work the Bobcat defense did in games one and two failed to materialize against the Herd.

Arkley is excellent. You can see the hard work.

2005 media guide has last time Ohio gave up 600+ yards was 692 to BG in '02. Obviously not necessarily the record and the game story to that doesn't mention anything about it being a school record.

+1.

I'm a former sportswriter, and I greatly appreciate having a talented, hardworking individual covering OUr sports teams. Go Jason!

I remember the OU vs UC game back in the Cleve vs Greg Cook era. I have a feeling UC may have had over 600 yards. I don't think any team, even our worst ones in the 80s and 90s, gave up over 700!

Overall yardages put up today are much higher than in years past because of rules changes that ushered in the new high-scoring passing offenses. If you don't find any games over 700 yards in the last 10 years, it would be very unlikely that you would find any before that.

As far as Arkley, I agree that he does a fantastic job. I remember back in 2005, when, before the season, the only sources of news were Ted's interviews with the athletes (done on Media day, and released at the rate of 1 a day until the first game), the official press releases, and an occasional article in The Post. Ohio has come a long way since then.

Honestly I don't think any beat writer for any P5 team does a better job of coverage than Arkley does for Ohio.

Agreed - Ohio has come a long way since then, and Arkely's reporting is part of that. I have to imagine his work sells a few subscriptions too.

Yes, quite a memorable contest with its tennis match-like scoring drives. Also recalled this Sports Illustrated article that I don't think I've seen posted on BA recently - http://www.si.com/vault/1968/11/25/670153/a-golden-age-co...

Thought it might provide the teams' offensive stats, Close but no cigar. Appears that Cincinnati likely hit 600+ yards for the game as Greg Cook threw for 554 yards, however, the total for both teams was reported as just 1175 yards with 67 first downs!

Added: Really enjoy this read as it absolutely refuses to label us "Ohio U.".

1stof1st110, thanks for posting the link to the SI story. I remember reading it at the time, and it was a real kick reading it again. I only have one quibble with it. IMHO, Todd Snyder was the most talented receiver on the field. But, I'm biased, Todd is a personal friend.
